Cuba grab Rio 2016 ticket

Edmonton, Canada, January 10, 2016 – Cuba won the NORCECA Men’s Olympic Qualification Tournament and the ticket to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games with their 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-21) win over Canada in front of a packed crowd at Saville Sports Centre on Sunday.

As second place team in the competition, Canada will have another chance to earn a ticket to Rio at the World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Japan next May.
By finishing in third place Mexico remained in contention for an Olympic berth and will be competing at the Intercontinental Qualification Tournament in May against the third placed team from South America and the second and third place teams from Africa for the last spot in the twelve-team field in Rio de Janeiro.

On the men's side, France, Poland and Iran are too good NOT to be included in the Olympics teams this year. Those will certainly get in there...and I think Canada can also squeak by -- just a little better than Australia.

The remaining 6 places for the women will be: Kenya (African round), Japan, Italy, the Netherlands and Dom Republic (from the Japan comp); and I think Puerto Rico will probably grab the last spot.

Canada doesn't have a hope now. There is no way Canada is going to get the final spot over France or Poland. It is weird that weaker African and Americas teams can a better chance then strong Americas teams.

If they finish top 3 (ie beat the Asoan teams in the tourament + Venezuela) they will be in. At the Wc last year they did that almost (only lost to Japan). Hopefully with the return of Schmitt, Canada will qualify.

Yea I read it wrong. I thought it was 1 Asian, and then top team. There is a major difference between this year and previously though. Say the results are

1. Poland

2. Iran

3. France

4. Canada

5. Venezuela

6. Japan

7. China

8. Australia

Poland, Iran and France qualify as top 3. Japan qualifies as Asian. Now it is Iran qualifies as Asian and Poland, France, Canada qualify as top 3.

Exactly. That's how I think it will come out, too. On paper, I think Canada and Iran are neck-in-neck; and are more physical than Japan. Tunisia and Mexico will battle it out for that last spot.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about this water polo qualification on the surface is the appearance of Malta in it over in Belgrade for the European arm. We really don't get to see Malta, as a small Mediterranean island nation, participate in a major team sports events outside of the Games of the Small States of Europe and maybe a Commonwealth Games appearance in team sports. Is there a Maltese water polo boom going on right now? Not unexpectedly, Malta went winless in their Group B games, resulting from major blowouts from Serbia, France, and Croatia, but will automatically, as will all 16 teams, make it to the Round of 16 and will get eliminated in the form of a blowout for they lack that international experience and pedigree. Malta will proceed in the 9th-16th classification round.

Italy (Torino's Pala Visatour), Serbia (Belgrade's Kombank Arena), and The Philippines (Metro Manila/Pasay's Mall of Asia Arena) will each host the groups in the 2016 FIBA Olympic Basketball Qualification Tournaments men's leg. Latvia and Croatia get spots as the highest-ranking European teams following Eurobasket 2015 with Turkey earning an invite as the highest-ranking team in the FIBA World Rankings not already at this stage. Too bad for Germany and Lebanon. France will host the 12-team women's FIBA Olympic Qualification Tournament. Draw for both will be set next week:

Serbia and Montenegro, they were a unified nation a decade ago remember, will battle it in Belgrade to a loud Kombank Arena crowd for gold and direct European men's water polo qualification. Loser joins Greece, Hungary, Spain, Italy, Germany, Russia, Slovakia, France, The Netherlands, and Romania to the final qualification tournament in Trieste, Italy April 3-10.

It will be 2008 gold medalists The Netherlands facing Hungary for the European women's title also in Belgrade and direct Olympic qualification with the world qualification tournament in Gouda, The Netherlands. Spain, Italy, Russia, and Greece have already qualified for it. If the Dutch win, Hungary apparently the Dutch host spot and perhaps move it to Hungary. The African women's continental selection will go along the same time as this with South Africa as the prohibitive favorite.

Africa's men's handball championship is well underway in Cairo, Egypt with Cameroon, Algeria, Nigeria, Gabon, Egypt, and Morocco in Group A. Angola, Kenya, Congo-Brazzaville, Tunisia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Libya round out Group B. Winner of course goes to Rio. I'm thinking is going to be among Tunisia, defending African champs Algeria, Angola, and Egypt. Except for 9-time participant Senegal with Kenya seemingly replacing them, everybody's back from the previous edition 2 years ago in Algeria.

FINA Announces Draws for Final Olympic Water Polo Qualification Tourny

Concurrently with last week’s European Water Polo Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, FINA has held the draw for the Olympic Games Qualification Tournament, which will determine the final four spots into the Olympics for men and women.

Men’s Tournament

In the men’s tournament, each team will play every other team in their own group, with the top four advancing to the knockout stages. Once in those knockout stages, the winners of each first round matchup will have earned their qualification to Rio. At that point, there is still an important battle for seeding that will take place.

The favorites in the tournament are the Italians, who won silver at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games and were the 2011 World Champions. They finished just 7th in the 2015 World League in front of a home crowd, and a spread-out qualifying system means that their bronze medal wasn’t good enough to take the one available spot (which went to silver medalists Montenegro – Serbia already had qualified as the World League champions).

Hungary, who lost to Italy in that bronze-medal match and was 5th in London, was also relegated to the qualification tournament, as was 2012 6th-place team Spain. Kazakhstan is the only other team in this tournament that played in London.

Group A - Russia, Slovakia, France, Hungary, Romania, Canada

Group B - Italy, South Africa, Spain, Netherlands, Germany, Kazakhstan

The tournament will be held in Trieste (ITA) on April 3-10, 2016

Women’s Tournament

The women’s tournament will be a brutal battle if anybody hopes to grab one of the coveted spots remaining in the Olympic tournament. Once again, the top 4 in each group will advance to a knockout stage.

What makes this group particularly challenging is that the Americas didn’t receive an automatic berth for the 2016 Olympics, nor did last year’s World Champions. That means the best team in the world in 2015, the United States, had to earn a Pan Am Games gold to even make this tournament. Americas silver medalists Canada are also in this qualification tournament.

Likewise relegated to the qualifiers is the Netherlands, who will enter the tournament with momentum: they took silver at last week’s European Championships (only one Olympic spot was available there) and play in front of a home crowd. They finished 2nd at last year’s World Championships.

In fact, all three medalists (including Italy) from the World Championships are in the qualification tournament, meaning that the top three spots will be very challenging to break. World Championships 6th-place team Greece are the favorites to join them.

Group A - Japan, SPain, South Africa, Canada , Greece, USA

Group B - France, Italy, New Zealand, Russia, Cuba, Netherlands

The tournament will be held in Gouda (NED) on March 21-28, 2016

In case you're wondering who won in Belgrade at the Kombank Arena water polo to directly qualify to Rio, Montenegro won the men's European title. Hungary wins the women's title over The Netherlands.

Little odd that the Americas don't have a direct water polo qualifier for the women like the men do. Why?

Group A in Gouda looks like the tougher of the two groups. Group B seems far easier: can't see the Cubans and the Kiwis going through. The Netherlands, Russia, Italy, and France advancing. Group A I see Spain, USA, Canada, and Greece. If the Americans finish first in Group A, I would feel more confident in them being among the final four teams that will directly qualify. Less so with their Canadian counterparts, though I'm certain they are getting better since they've matured over in recent years and like to get back in the Olympics since 2004. The Dutch surely will use being in that home cooking in Gouda as a pick-me-up after failing to qualify from Belgrade losing to Hungary. I would be shocked in a good way if the South Africans break through somehow.

Exclusive: Russia poised to lose Rio 2016 weightlifting quota places following more doping failures

Russia is poised to lose at least one weightlifting quota place for this summer's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro after four doping failures were confirmed within the qualification window, with another likely to follow.

Under the IWF's anti-doping policy, the world governing body's Executive Board retains the right to remove one quota place from a country if four doping failures are registered within the qualification window, while six or more cases can result in two being withdrawn.

Two Russians: reigning European Youth under 85 kilograms champion Ilya Atnabayev and 2014 under 94kg winner Denis Kekhter, were each formally handed four-year suspensions yesterday.

A third, over 105kg heavyweight Artem Grigoryan, was handed a four-year ban earlier last year for taking anabolic steroids while a fourth, two-time European 105kg silver medallist Maksim Sheiko, was sanctioned within the two-year qualification window in October 2014.

Four other Russians, however, also registered Adverse Analytical Finding's at last year's World Championships in Houston, including over 105kg world champion Aleksei Lovchev.

Olga Zubova, who earned women's clean and jerk gold and overall under 75kg bronze, also failed along with under 94kg competitor Aleksei Kosov, who lifted 181kg to claim snatch gold, and women’s under 69kg lifter Olga Afanaseva.

All four of these cases are still outstanding, with B-samples and appeals currently taking place.

If, as expected, they are all confirmed, that will mean eight Russian failures, meaning two quota places could be lost.

Countries which register nine failures within a calendar year are automatically banned from the Games.

This has already happened to Bulgaria following 11 cases in 2015, while Romania has already forfeited a quota place.

Russia, the weightlifting powerhouse which has already qualified for maximum of six male and four female quota places, appears safe from a complete ban for the time being, because their cases were spread over different calendar years.

A decision is expected to be made by the IWF's ruling Executive Board at its next meeting on March 12 and 13 in Rio de Janeiro.

The IWF are hopeful that all the cases from last year's World Championships will be finalised before then.

They are keen to resolve all the cases as quickly as possible, so other countries know how many positions are available before the continental qualification events, while also showing their resolve to punish all countries who register failures.

Other nations could also forfeit places.

This includes Uzbekistan, who have three sanctioned athletes on the 2015 list and two others within the qualification-window on the 2014 list, meaning they should lose one place.

Five Azerbaijani athletes also registered Adverse Analytical Findings during the World Championships, with all yet to be formally confirmed, while Kazakhstan has two athletes sanctioned, with three other open cases.

This comes as Russian remains banned from the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) after the World Anti-Doping Agency's Independent Commission published allegations of systemic and state sponsored doping within Russian athletics.

insidethegames understands that more cases may still emerge from last year's World Championships.

Only 8 teams, so the host nation took the Americaa quota.
