gotosy Posted November 13, 2015 Author Report Share Posted November 13, 2015 Eight countries bidding to host the 2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments MIES, Switzerland (2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments for Men and Women) – FIBA has officially announced the candidates running to host the 2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments. Eight countries have submitted their final bid to host one of the four 2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments for Men and Women. France and Spain are the candidates to host the 12-team Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament (WOQT) running from 13-19 June, which has five places on offer for the Women's Olympic Basketball Tournament at the 2016 Rio Olympics. On the men’s side, Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Philippines, Serbia and Turkey are in the running to hold the three 6-team Olympic Qualifying Tournaments that will run over the course of six days during the week of 4-10 July. The winning team at each of the three events will qualify for the Men's Olympic Basketball Tournament. Given the high number of candidates bidding to host one of the four events and in order to properly assess each candidature, the evaluation period has been extended and the decision regarding the four hosts will be taken by FIBA’s Executive Committee on 19 January 2016. The Draw for the 2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments will take place on 26 January 2016 at the House of Basketball in Mies, Switzerland. The only real potential upset outside of the Colombian women would be South Africa not qualifying on the women's side, but that's a self inflicted blow from the South African Olympic committee, not a failure of the team to qualify. On the men's side the final spot should come down to Canada, Tonga and Samoa. Hopefully Canada can have a strong tournament in Dubai and Cape Town leading into next year. Today, the first 60 boxers heading to Rio have been confirmed for the men’s competition, including 34 Olympic debutants. AIBA Pro Boxing tournaments have produced 20 qualifiers, Season V of the World Series of Boxing gleaned 17 Olympians and 23 athletes have secured quota places thanks to their performances at the 2015 AIBA World Boxing Championships in Doha. “The qualification of 60 boxers is a demonstration of the hard work of the AIBA family in the development of the sport of boxing and I would like congratulate our member federations, the qualified boxers and all those involved. I would also like to praise the AIBA team and Rio 2016 Organising Committee for the hard work in delivering the Boxing Test Event in Rio. Ireland’s recent successes at the 2015 World Championships means that four boxers from the Emerald Isle, including Michael Conlan and Patrick Barnes, now have their Olympic berths confirmed. Despite not fielding a single boxer at London 2012, Croatia can already count on the talents of WSB super heavyweight champion Filip Hrgovic in Rio, while double world champion Clemente Russo of Italy and France’s World Champion Tony Yoka are also among the 60 names now qualified. A further 190 men and 36 women will be confirmed for Rio 2016 over the coming months, with AIBA Olympic Qualifiers being held in Argentina, Cameroon and China in March. Athletes have until July 11, 2016 to achieve the qualification standards. Track and field events at the Olympics begin on Aug. 12 and conclude with the men's marathon on Aug. 21. “In April 2015, the IAAF Council approved the entry standards but allowed for a review following the IAAF World Championships Beijing 2015 where a similar system of qualification and similar standards were used,” the IAAF said in a statement. ”Resulting from the experience of these championships, the Technical Delegates proposed some amendments to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games entry standards, which have been accepted by all parties.” As opposed to previous global championships, there is only one single standard and no option for an ‘A’ standard or ‘B’ standard. Here are some of the noted changes: • The women's 400-meter dash time was slowed .20 seconds from 52.00 to 52.20. • Half a second was added to the women’s 800-meter run standard which goes from 2:01.00 to 2:01.50. At last year’s U.S. outdoor championship, 2:00.48 did not qualify for the final. Alexa Efraimson (2:01.11), Hanna Green (2:01.17), Katie Mackey (2:01.20), Gabe Grunewald (2:01.23) now meet the qualifying standard for Rio. • A full second was added to the women’s 1,500-meter run, which moved from 4:06:00 to 4:07:00. In 2015, 15 American women have run faster then 4:07:00 for the event. Rachel Schneider, a professional runner for Under Armour and Georgetown graduate, picks up the standard with the change as she has run 4:06.90 this year. • In the women’s 5,000-meter run, the qualifying standard was slowed by four seconds from 15:20 to 15:24. • Marathon qualifying standards changed on both sides as the women were added three seconds to jump from 2:42:00 to 2:25:00. The men’s qualifier goes from 2:17:00 to 2:19:00. The United States will determine its Olympic marathoners with the Olympic Marathon Trials scheduled for Feb. 13 in Los Angeles. • The men’s triple jump qualifying standard was eased from 16.90-meters to 16.85-meters and the women’s from 14.20-meters to 14.15-meters. • Only three men’s track events changed qualifying standards. In the men’s 800-meter run and 1,500-meter run, .20 seconds were added to the qualifying times which now stand at 1:46.00 and 3:36.20 respectively. Olympic silver medalist Leo Manzano ran a season's best of 3:36.16 and is now qualified for a return to the Olympics for the 1,500-meters, if he makes the U.S. team at the Olympic Trials. Former NCAA champion Robby Andrews ran a season's best of 1:45.98 in the 800-meters for 2015 and represented the U.S. in the 1,500-meters at the IAAF World Championships. World Rugby has announced that Monaco and Dublin will host the final rugby sevens qualification tournaments for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. With 11 of the 12 teams confirmed for both events, the climax to the global qualification process will deliver the final men's and women's teams. The magnificent Stade Louis in Monaco will host the men's tournament on 18-19 June, 2016 while Dublin's UCD Bowl will host the women's repechage a week later on 25-26 June. A total of 16 men's teams will compete in Monaco for the one remaining place for Rio 2016 between 9-11 August. They are: Uruguay, Chile, Canada, Mexico, Spain, Russia, Germany, Ireland, Hong Kong, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Tonga, Samoa, Zimbabwe, Morocco and Tunisia. The announcement follows confirmation by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) to the South African Rugby Union and World Rugby that it does not intend to accept a place at the Games, which the South African women earned via the Africa regional qualifier. Kenya, who were runners-up in the qualification tournament held earlier this year, will now take the coveted place. I understand that Africa doesn't really grant much in the way of competition continent-wide in some sports like field hockey and rugby and SASOC would prefer deeper competition for them. But many African nations aren't going to get to that direction overnight. Better get that Olympics now and take advantage of it now. It hurts the profile of the South African women athletes like them who incredibly hard under those programs throughout sub-Saharan African in their profiles and casual fans watching on SuperSport and SABC Sport who don't know or don't follow about the sport and is deeply unfair--as well as swelling the number of young South African women eager to play it in the future. Not to say the Kenyans aren't capable. In rugby's case, the nations ahead of the Springbok women like Australia, Great Britain, France, and NZ aren't going to tumble from the top anytime soon for SA to move ahead. That's the reality. This now confirms the 12 team line-ups for both the men’s and women’s hockey events for next year’s Olympics, and following last week’s FIH World Rankings update, the pools are now set. In women’s Pool A, defending Olympic and reigning world champions Netherlands, ranked number 1 in the FIH World Rankings, will face 2015 Hockey World League runners up New Zealand (ranked 4 in the World Rankings); China (5); Germany (8); Korea (9) and Spain (14). In women’s Pool B, 2015 Hockey World League champions Argentina (2) will face Australia (3); Great Britain (6 – based on England’s ranking); USA (7); Japan (10) and India (13). In the men’s event, Pool A sees reigning World and Hockey World League champions Australia, currently ranked number one in the world, face Great Britain (4 – based on England’s ranking); 2015 Hockey World League runners up Belgium (5); New Zealand (8); Spain (11) and hosts Brazil (32). And then there are the pesky 2016 World League and Grand Prix comps to complicate things for the OGs.
