Well, due to a somewhat ridiculous development out of South Africa New Zealand has a further chance to qualify: South Africa has anounced that they will not accept a field hockey quota from the African championship whether it be from the men's or women's side. So if South Africa wins the men's African championship then New Zealand will almost certainly qualify regardless of the Oceania cup results. The winners of the men’s and women’s singles titles in table tennis – Brazil’s Hugo Calderano and the USA’s Wu Yue – won places at next year’s Olympic Games, as confirmed by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). Wu defeated Brazil’s Gui Lin 4-3 in a thrilling women’s final on Saturday. Having taken a 2-0 lead, the American went 3-2 behind before fighting back to clinch the title and her place in Rio. “I feel amazing, I am going to the Olympic Games,” said the 25-year-old. “This is a dream come true.” Later on Saturday, 19-year-old Calderano triumphed 4-3 over compatriot Gustavo Tsuboi, who was the no.1 seed. “I just cannot describe how I feel, it's incredible, there are no words,” said Calderano, who won the bronze medal at last year’s Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China. Wu and Calderano join Germany’s Dimitrij Ovtcharov and Li Jiao of the Netherlands in the Rio 2016 singles tournaments. Ovtcharov and Li won the men’s and women’s singles titles, respectively, at the European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan, in June. The International Equestrian Federation (FEI) has confirmed that Canada and Argentina have claimed places in the Rio 2016 jumping team event via the Pan-American Games, while Colombia and Venezuela both earned two spots in the individual competition, with Uruguay and Peru taking one each. Canada and Argentina booked their places in Rio by taking gold and silver, respectively, in Toronto, and they join the Netherlands, France, USA, Germany, Sweden, Brazil and Qatar in having their Olympic spots confirmed. In the individual event, the top six finishers in Toronto whose countries had not already qualified in the team event would earn Rio 2016 slots for their nations. Venezuela earned two places thanks to silver medallist Andres Rodrigues and Emanuel Andrade’s sixth place finish, while Colombia had Daniel Bluman and Fernando Cardenas, who tied in 11th place, to thank for their two Olympic berths. Uruguay’s Nestor Nielsen Van Hoff (ninth) and Peru’s Alonso Valdez (also 11th) earned places for their nations. The USA had already won places in the eventing and dressage team events at Rio 2016, via the Pan-American Games. In the women’s modern pentathlon event in Toronto, Brazil’s Yane Marques won gold ahead of Mexican pair Tamara Vega and Mayan Oliver. With one Olympic place per nation up for grabs, silver medallist Vega earned a place in Rio, but Oliver did not, and the other Olympic berths were secured by Canada’s Donna Vakalis, Guatemala’s Isabel Brand and Cuba’s Leydi Laura Moya, as confirmed by the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM). Marques had already earned an Olympic place by taking bronze at the world championships in Berlin, but her Pan American Games gold means she will now compete in Rio as the continental champion for South America. The place she earned at the world championships will be passed down to Great Britain’s Samantha Murray, who finished fifth in Berlin. In the men’s modern pentathlon event, Charles Fernandez won gold for Guatemala and a place in Rio, as did silver medallist Ismael Hernandez of Mexico and bronze medallist Nathan Schrimsher of the USA. "The Russian basketball federation received a letter from FIBA, which said that all Russian national teams have been banned," Sergei Chernov, honourary president of the Russian basketball federation, told the TASS news agency. "For the moment Russia's FIBA membership was also temporarily suspended. The FIBA final verdict on the case will be announced at its conference on August 8-9." Chernov added that the Russian men national men's squad is under threat of missing the European championship in September and next year's Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. A dispute between the previous national basketball federation head and the new president Yulia Anikeyeva, who was elected in 2013, was reportedly the reason for the ban. On June 18 one of Moscow's regional courts ordered the national basketball federation to hold fresh elections for the post of president and its executive board within 60 days. The country's ruling body issued an appeal against a judgement but it was rejected. According to a Russian version of the letter from FIBA's president Horacio Muratore, the sports governing body criticised the Russian authorities for failing to resolve the situation. "We have a feeling that none of the interested parties showed its intentions to bring the Russian basketbal federation to unanimity and stability," the letter said. However, Muratore did invite federation head Anikeyeva to attend the FIBA conference in August to give an account of the situation and held out hope that the ban would be lifted. The decision was made based on the Brazil Basketball Confederation (CBB)'s application which confirms they meet the various sporting requirements, including having a rich sporting history in basketball and being able to guarantee their best teams competing in Rio. CBB, supported by its partners and the Brazil Olympic Committee (BOC), has made a firm commitment to pay the outstanding debt. According to FIBA's statutes, the Central Board holds the right to grant automatic qualification to the host country organising the Olympic Games. Brazil’s national teams are competing at the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship in Mexico City (31 August-12 September) and 2015 FIBA Americas Women’s Championship in Edmonton (9-16 August). FIBA Suspension of Russian Basketball Federation upheld; players authorised to playTOKYO (FIBA Central Board) - After hearing a report by the Russian Basketball Federation (RBF), Russian Ministry of Sport and Russian Olympic Committee at its meeting on Sunday, FIBA's Central Board decided to uphold RBF's suspension but to exceptionally grant players and officials (coaches, referees, commissioners) the right to participate in the upcoming FIBA events. The suspension was issued by FIBA's Executive Committee on 29 July because of the RBF's inability to resolve longstanding institutional and legal issues. These have prevented the Federation from working under proper conditions and maintaining full control and governance in the country - as proven by the repeated changes in leadership over the past five years and the recently published Court decision against the RBF. A FIBA Task Force will be established to monitor and supervise the situation as well as to ensure that progress is made by the RBF in establishing statutes and regulations in compliance with FIBA and in cooperation with the Russian Ministry of Sport and Russian Olympic Committee. The Asian women's basketball championships are taking place in Wuhan, China. Only the teams at Level 1 are eligible for Rio. But it certainly looks like it will only be once again the East Asian monopoly coming out for the direct Asia berth and the Olympic Qualification Tournament--China, Japan, South Korea, and Chinese Taipei. Sorry, India and Thailand. FIBA Americas just started today in Mexico City at the old site for the 1968 basketball and volleyball events, the Palacio De Los Deportes. Top five will advance at least to the OQT and not named Brazil. And the top two out of that top 5 will directly qualify. Go Canada Go!! China and South Korea head over to the Olympic Qualification Tournament. gotosy Posted September 9, 2015 Author Report Share Posted September 9, 2015 Olympic Canoe Sprint Qualification spots confirmed Hungary showed their canoe sprint prowess as they amassed the most qualification spots for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games following their efforts at the 2015 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in Milan, Italy. Despite being third on the medal table, trailing Belarus and Germany, the top paddlers from the canoe sprint super power consistently qualified for 'A' finals across the Olympic disciplines, which provided them an impressive tally of nine boats and an athlete quota of 15. The Russian Federation secured the second position on the qualification roster with eight boats and 13 athletes. Belarus (3rd) and Serbia (4th) continued their impressive surge towards the top of the sport as they gained the next highest athlete quota places. Germany will also consider their qualification tally of 10 athletes across six boats a reasonable return. Rio will provide a premiere appearance for the two Argentinian crews following their success in the K4M 1000m and K4W 500m. They also have a boat in the K1M 200m. The success of the crew boats in the blue and white stripes of the South American nation also provided them the honour of gaining the highest number of qualifications spots outside of Europe. Perhaps most disappointed to see the outcome of their efforts will be Canada; as nation that has traditionally been strong across the Olympic disciplines, their tally of just two boats (K1M 200m and K1W500m) won’t live up to their expectation. Across the board, the five-days of competition in Milan provided 174 athletes in 90 boats a potential ticket for next years Games. However, winning their nation an athlete quota for Rio does not guarantee each individual a place on the start line, with many now facing fierce internal competition through their own national selection to compete on the Lagoa lagoon in 11 months time. The next opportunity for nations to add to their tallies will be the five continental qualifiers that will take place over the next nine months.
