Race to qualify for the mountain bike in the Olympics reaches its halfway stage, with seven countries through South Africa, Australia, Brazil, Colombia, Mauritius, Mexico and New Zealand have guaranteed themselves a place at the Olympic Games

Like any other route to the Olympic Games, the road to qualification for the mountain bike is tough, long and winding, but holds out the promise of a great reward for whoever manages to get there. This Monday (25) the qualification period for the sport reached its halfway stage – there is just a year left before fans find out who qualifies for the mountain bike event in the Olympic Games.

Of the 50 participants in the men’s squad, 41 will be determined by their position in the federation’s Olympic qualification rankings. Results started to count towards this ranking on 25 May of this past year and will continue until 25 May 2016. The 23 best-placed countries will guarantee themselves a place in the Olympic Games Rio 2016 in the following way: the five top-ranked countries will each have the right to three Olympic places; the countries between 6th and 13th place will get two places each; then each of the next ten best will be able to send one cyclist to the mountain bike event in the Rio 2016 Games.

The Olympic qualification for women follows a similar pattern, but with fewer places. For the 30 spots available for women, 25 will come from their nation’s position in the Olympic rankings, with the best eight countries guaranteed two athletes each, and the nine countries following winning one place each.

The four champions of the 2015 continental competitions (in Africa, the Americas, Asia and Oceania) will also qualify, but only if they have failed to reach the Games via the ranking route. The top two countries in each men’s tournament (up to a total of eight places) and the best nations in the women’s event (up to four spots) that have still failed to secure places through the ranking route will win one place each.

As they were the best countries in their respective continental tournaments, South Africa and Mauritius (Africa), Brazil and Colombia (Americas) and Australia and New Zealand (Oceania) have already booked their spots in the men’s events. In the women’s, South Africa, Mexico and Australia are through.

As host country, Brazil already has two places guaranteed for the mountain bike, one for the men’s event and the other for the women’s. But, according to Ruy Avancini, the technical director of the Brazil team, the goal is to ensure at least two athletes qualify in the men’s event. For this, Brazil needs so stay in the list of the 13 best teams until 2016 – currently they are in 13th place. The task is tough, but within the reach of the green and yellows.

“It’s a tough ask,” Avancini said. “Cycling is an unpredictable sport: one fall on the last bend from one cyclist and the country could lose many points. But today, we are within the qualification band. So we are within our target range. It’s hard, but it’s doable.” Ruy Avancini is the father of Henrique Avancini, the best-ranked Brazilian athlete in the sport and the Americas champion, currently in 10th place in the world rankings.

The next championship to guarantee an Olympic place this year will be Asia, in Malaysia between 12-16 August.

South American rugby sevens teams go into battle for places at Rio 2016 Olympic Games

Teams from Africa, North America, Europe and Oceania have already qualified for the rugby sevens tournament at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games – now it is time for a little South American flavour to be added. The continental championships will kick off in Santa Fé, Argentina, on Friday (5 June) and the winners of the men’s and women’s titles, who will be known by Sunday (7 June), will earn their places at the first Olympic Games in South America.

Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, Colombia, Venezuela and Peru will contest the men’s tournament, while the same seven plus Costa Rica will compete in the women’s event. Brazil will not participate, having already been guaranteed places in both Olympic tournaments as host nation. Argentina will be favourites to qualify for Rio in both genders, especially without the Brazilian women’s team – which has won every previous edition of the tournament – to challenge them.

In both the men’s and women’s events, all the teams will play each other in a round-robin format, with the side that finishes top of the table qualifying for Rio 2016. The second and third-placed teams will get another chance at a global repechage tournament in 2016, after all the regional tournaments have been played.

Modern Pentathlon has its first 12 athletes for the Rio 2016 Games

The Asia/Oceania Modern Pentathlon Championship 2015 ended this weekend with 12 athletes guaranteed places at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Slots for both men and women were awarded to the five best placed athletes from Asia and the best placed athlete from Oceania (stay up to date with qualifications for the 2016 Games here). In all, seven events were contested: male and female individual, male and female team, and mixed, male and female relay.

Among the women, the standout performance came from Qian Chen, from China, currently No.3 in the world ranking, who won the continental tournament for the second time in a row. China yielded three athletes in the top five, however, as Olympic classification rules for the sport state that each country can only have a maximum of two athletes per gender competing at the Games, only the two best placed Chinese competitors will go to Rio 2016 – Wanxia Liang and Chen.

The other four women who qualified for Rio 2016 are Sunwoo Kim (Korea), Natsumi Tomonaga (Japan), Elena Potapenko (Kazakhstan) and Chloe Esposito (Australia - the only female representative from Oceania).

Among the men, the favorite, Woongtae Jun, from Korea, (winner of the World Modern Pentathlon Cup in 2014), secured his place at the Games. His countryman, Dongii Lee, also qualified for Rio 2016. The other four men who qualified were Haihang Su and Cao Zhongrong (both from China), Tomoya Miguchi (from Japan - who won the Olympic spot thanks to the same rule that the prohibits the presence of more than two athletes from the same country), and Max Esposito (from Australia – brother of Chloe Esposito, who qualified in the women’s competition).

The modern pentathlon tournament will bring a total of 72 athletes to the Games in Rio 2016. As the host country, Brazil has two guaranteed places in the sport, one per gender.

More qualifiers in sight

The modern pentathlon will have a busy month in June. After Asia, the final stage of the Modern Pentathlon World Cup in Minsk (Belarus) will take place between the 12 and 14, and the winners will also qualify for the Olympics. From the 28th, the World Championships in Berlin (Germany) kick off with six Olympic places up for grabs, (three per gender), to be distributed to the best placed athletes not already qualified for Rio 2016.

USA men and women book tickets to Rio

USA men and women qualify for the Rio Olympic Games after victory at the NACRA Sevens, while France men and Russia women take a step closer on the European circuit.

nt7-rio-qualified-wr.jpg

USA beat Canada 21-5 in the final of the NACRA Sevens to qualify for the Olympic Games as a result.

Perry Baker, Danny Barrett and Maka Unufe gave them a 21-0 lead at half-time before Harry Jones scored the only try in the second half for Canada as the USA held on to confirm their place in Rio next year.

Following the final in front of a packed house in Cary, North Carolina, Mike Friday's side become the seventh of 12 sides to qualify for the Games, joining Brazil, Fiji, South Africa, New Zealand, Team GB and Argentina.

Canada will get one further chance to qualify, becoming one of the 16 sides at the final World Repechage next year, alongside Mexico who beat the Cayman Islands 26-19 in the third place play-off.

In the women's final the USA, who memorably lost out on an automatic place from the World Rugby Women's Sevens Series with a 15-14 defeat against England in the third place play-off in the final tournament in Amsterdam, proved too strong for Mexico.

Kristen Thomas scored the opening try for Ric Suggitt's side with the experience of being a core side on the women's circuit proving the difference in an 88-0 win. Lauren Doyle added a hat-trick in the win and they join Brazil, New Zealand, Canada, Australia, Team GB and Colombia in qualifying for the women's competition in Rio.

Mexico and Trinidad & Tobago, who beat Jamaica 12-10, still have a chance of qualification to Rio and will compete in the repechage next year having finished second and third respectively.

FRANCE AND RUSSIA ON TRACK IN EUROPE

France Sevens backed up their win at the Moscow Sevens last weekend with a 20-7 win over Spain on home soil at the Lyon Sevens, round two of three in the European Grand Prix Series.

Inspired by the influential captain Terry Bouhraoua the win means France now lead the European Grand Prix Sevens Series with 40 points, six ahead of Spain and 12 ahead of Russia. Attention now turns to Exeter for the third and final leg in July where Frederic Pomarel's side will be hoping to become one of the 12 teams to compete in the men's competition in Rio next year.

Britain and Switzerland qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympic triathlon

Great Britain and Switzerland were the first countries to secure places in the Rio 2016 Olympic triathlon following qualifying gold medal wins this weekend at the inaugural European Games in Baku, from Britain’s Gordon Brenson and Nicola Spirig from Switzerland.

Current Olympic champion, Nicola Spirig, triumphed in the women’s event to finish in a time of 02:00:28 on Saturday (13 June), after the grueling, multi-disciplinary test, which involves stretches of cycling, swimming and running.

...

In the men's competition, held on Sunday (14 June), Briton Gordon Benson took the gold in a time of 01:48.31.

The Olympic tickets won at Baku are allocated to the winning athletes’ countries and not to the athletes themselves. The countries will decide at a later date which athletes they will send to the Rio 2016 Games to represent them.

In all, 55 triathletes of each gender will compete in Rio. As the host country, Brazil automatically qualifies for both the men’s and women’s competitions. Further Olympic triathlon spots will be decided at four continental qualifiers and a final World Olympic Qualification Event later in the year. Forty-four spots will be allocated to the highest ranked countries on each of the men’s and women’s International Triathlon Union (ITU) Olympic Qualification Lists and ITU Points Lists, and two other spots per gender will be allocated by invitation.

The Baku 2015 European Games run until 28 June and the results will effect Olympic qualifications for athletes and countries in 15 different sports. In three events – triathlon, table tennis and shooting – the winners at Baku will qualify directly for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Germany, Argentina and the Netherlands qualify for Rio 2016 men's field hockey

Germany, Argentina and the Netherlands finished in first, second and third place respectively in the men’s International Hockey Federation (FIH) World League 2014/2015 semi-final, held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and secured their places at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The semi-final concluded on Sunday (14 June) and the teams join India in the lineup for the Rio 2016 men’s field hockey competition.

Reigning double Olympic champions, Germany, who won gold at Beijing 2008 and London 2012, continued their winning streak to take the top spot in the first World League semi-final, defeating their Argentine hosts by 4-1. Meanwhile, the Netherlands beat Canada 6-0 in the race for the third and final Olympic spot up for grabs last Sunday.

In the men’s 2014/2015 World League, 20 national teams play in four rounds over a two year period at venues across the globe. Round one took place in 2014, round two happened between January and March this year, and the first of two semi-finals began on 3 June and finished last Sunday (14). The second men’s semi-final is scheduled for 20 June to 5 July in Antwerp, and the final will take place from 5-13 December in Rosario, Argentina. The top three teams from each semi-final are guaranteed places at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

The women’s field hockey division runs a parallel qualifying tournament. The first semi-final began on the 10 June and runs until 21, in Valencia, Spain, and will yield three women’s Olympic contenders to join the Republic of Korea in the Rio 2016 women’s hockey lineup. The second of the women's semi-finals will take place alongside the men’s competition in Antwerp, Belgium.

In total, 24 teams (12 in the men’s and 12 in the women’s) will take part in Olympic field hockey competitions at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, with all 24 to be defined by the end of 2015. Two teams – India in the men’s and the Republic of Korea in the women’s section – qualified at the Asian Games in October 2014.

The 2014/2015 World League will yield a further 12 teams – six men’s and six women’s teams from the male and female semi-final competitions – plus at least one additional team, as explained below.

The seventh-best-placed women’s team in the World League tournament will also qualify for Rio 2016. This team will take the Olympic spot normally reserved for the host country, which Brazil’s women’s team was unable to accept after it failed to meet the FIH’s performance criteria required to compete in the Olympic Games. The Brazilian’s men’s team still have a chance to take up their Olympic spot, provided they finish among the six best teams at the Pan American Games next month, otherwise their Olympic place will be given to the seventh-placed men’s team from the World League tournament.

Four other continental champions in each gender (from the Americas, Europe, Africa and Oceania) will secure Olympic places in tournaments to be held later this year. If the winners of the continental championships have already qualified for Rio 2016, the vacant Olympic spots will be awarded to the next best-performing countries from the World League who have not already qualified for the Games.

Great Britain, China and Germany finished in the top 3 of their FIH World League semi-finals. They join South Korea who qualified as Asian Games champion.

Argentina will also almost certainly qualify as the best fourth place team due to their high world ranking (host Brazil failed to gain an automatic place in the women's side).

Germany, France book tickets to 2016 Olympics

Vancouver (AFP) - Germany and France booked their tickets to the 2016 Rio Olympics as two of the best European teams in the Women's World Cup in Canada.

Norway's 2-1 loss to England -- who do not compete in the Olympics -- in the last 16 on Monday ensured that Germany and France have two of the three places.

The Netherlands could join the duo at the Olympics if they beat Japan in their last-16 match on Tuesday.

Women's Basketball:

Serbia has just won it's first ever women's Eurobasket title, which seals their first Olympic qualification in women's basketball. France, Spain, Belarus and Turkey grabbed the four European spots in the final Olympic qualification tournament where five Olympic spots will be up for grabs. In 2008 and 2012, the two times this tournament has been held previously, European teams finished 1-4 that tournament (with Brazil and Canada grabbing the fifth spot in 2008 and 2012 respectively).

Rio 2016 will be the first Olympics where the Soviet Union or Russia fail to qualify in women's basketball after losing the Eurobasket fifth place match in overtime against Turkey.

I am struggling to understand how field hockey is working.

So for the men you had Argentina, Germany and Netherlands quality and will likely be joined by Australia, Belgium and Great Britain. India is already qualified. One would assume that Argentina will be Pan Am champion and that one of Germany, Netherlands, Belgium and Britain would be European champion and Australia would be Oceanic champion. So with 3 spots riverting to the FIH semi-finals, does that mean the highest ranked countries in the top six qualify (likely Spain, New Zealand and Pakistan) or will it be the 4th and 5th place teams being Canada, Spain and likely Pakistan.

Nevermind I just reread it and as long as one of the top 6 are continental champions and India reach the World League finals Canada qualifies.

Serbia wins the World League and a place in the 2016 Olympic men's water polo

On Sunday (28) Serbia became the first European country to qualify for the men’s water polo competition at the 2016 Olympic Games, after emerging victorious at the 2015 FINA Men's Water Polo World League Super Final in Bergamo, Italy. The Serbian team beat reigning Olympic champions, Croatia, by 9-6. Bronze medalists at the last two Olympic Games, the Serbs claimed their ninth World League gold medal on Sunday (their third in a row).

2016 Olympic host country, Brazil, who have not participated in the men's water polo at the Games since Los Angeles in 1984, came third in Bergamo and proved they are hot on the trail of medals at the 2016 Games.

...

Serbia now joins Brazil, the host country, as the only two countries in the line-up for the Rio 2016 men’s water polo so far. The next two countries to qualify will be the two finalists of the 2015 World Championship beginning on July 24. The other eight places will be decided in 2016, given out to the winners of each of the five continental championships (in Africa, the Americas, Europe, Asia and Oceania); and the top three teams from the Olympic Games Qualification Tournament.
In the women’s competition, so far only Brazil is in the line-up. The other seven teams will be decided next year, made up of the winners of 4 Continental Championships (Africa, Europe, Asia and Oceania) and the top three countries from the Olympic Games Qualification Tournament.

Field hockey:

The Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand all qualify in women's field hockey by winning their quarterfinals in the world league semifinals. Argentina, Australia, China, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands, New Zealand and South Korea qualify for the world league finals. South Korea also won their quarterfinals in a shoot-out against Belgium but they already qualified as Asian Games champions. Since South Korea is already qualified and Brazil will not receive a host quota Argentina, the fourth placed team in the first semi-finals, is also qualified for the Olympics.

On the women's side both fifth place teams in the world league semifinals will almost certainly make it to the Olympics with a strong chance of the highest ranked sixth ranked team also making it.

On the men's side Australia, Belgium, Great Britain and India all won their quarterfinals and make it to the Olympics (Australia, Belgium and GB from the world league, India as Asian Games champion). This result also guarantees that Germany, Argentina, the Netherlands, Canada, India, Australia, Belgium and Great Britain qualify for the world league finals. Canada is now assured of an Olympic spot if either they or Argentina win the Pan-am games, if Brazil finishes seventh or worse at the Pan-am games or if any of if an already qualified teams win the European or Oceanic championship.

Baring some major upset in the remaining continental championships (i.e. : Argenting or the US don't win the Pan-Am games, Netherlands, England or Germany don't win the European championship and Australia or New Zealand don't win the Oceania cup) the lineup in women's field hockey will be:

- South Korea

- Great Britain

- China

- Germany

- Argentina

- Netherlands

- Australia

- New Zealand

- United States

- India

- Japan

- African champion (likely South Africa)

Which means that the top 11 teams in the world would qualify. India, the lowest ranked qualifier, is 13th in the world. Also 11 of the 12 teams in London return for Rio (only Belgium, coincidentally the 12th team in the world, fails to qualify).

In men's field hockey, the following teams have qualified:

India (Asian champion)

Germany, Argentina, Netherlands, Australia, Belgium, Great Britain (World League)

The African, European, Pan-American and Oceanic championships are left. Three of those championships can be won by a team qualified from the world league, in which case the quota place from the world league is redistributed. Additionally, Brazil will only compete as host nation if they finish in the top 6 (out of 8 teams) at the Pan-am games. If they do not qualify the remaining quota goes to the world league. Any additional quotas this opens up will be distributed, in order, to the following teams:

Canada, Spain, the Republic of Ireland, New Zealand.

tl;dr: Canada and Spain are basically assured qualification. If Brazil doesn't get a host spot both Ireland and New Zealand should make it, otherwise Ireland will make it unless New Zealand beats Australia in the Oceanic Championship.

Brazil wins second beach volleyball slots at Rio 2016 Games after dominating world championships

Gold in men's and women's tournaments in the Netherlands ensure host nation has maximum quota for Olympic Games

Brazil issued a statement of intent ahead of next year’s beach volleyball tournament at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, dominating the podiums at the world championships in the Netherlands this weekend (4-5 July) and earning their second places in the men’s and women’s Olympic tournaments.

As host nation, Brazil was already guaranteed a place in both tournaments next year on Copacabana beach, but by taking both gold medals in The Hague they ensured that two Brazilian teams – the maximum allowed – will take part in each competition.

In the men’s world championship final on Sunday (5 July), Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt triumphed 12-21, 21-14, 22-20 over Dutch pair Reinder Nummerdor and Christian Varenhorst – who were cheered on by a boisterous home crowd – to top the podium, with fellow Brazilians Evandro Gonclaves and Pedro Solberg beating the USA’s Theodore Brunner and Nick Lucena for bronze.

The men’s success had followed a Brazilian 1-2-3 in the women’s tournament, with Barbara Seixas and Agatha Bednarczuk beating compatriots Taiana Lima and Fernanda Alves 21-18, 21-19 in Saturday’s (4 July) final, shortly after Juliana Felisberta da Silva and Maria Antonelli overcame Germans Katrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler for bronze.

...

Forty-eight teams (24 men’s and 24 women’s) will compete in the beach volleyball competition at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The top 15 pairs in each gender on the Olympic Ranking List as of 13 June next year will join Brazil, as will the winners of five continental championships (the Americas, Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania) that finish in June 2016. The last places will be awarded to the top two male and female teams from the FIVB Beach Volleyball Continental Cup in July 2016.

Athletes go into battle for Rio 2016 places at Pan-American Games

The Toronto 2015 Pan-American Games, whose opening ceremony will take place on Friday (10 July), will play an important role in the battle for places at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. In some sports, a medal in Canada will also be worth a place in Brazil next year.

To help you understand what is at stake, rio2016.com has compiled a sport-by-sport list explaining how athletes can step closer to their Olympic dreams by achieving success in Toronto.

Canoe slalom: The winners of the men’s and women’s K1 events, and the men’s C1 and C2 events, will earn Rio 2016 places for their countries.

Diving: The gold medallist in each individual event will win a Rio 2016 place for their nation.

Equestrian dressage: The team gold medallists will earn a place in Rio, although if the winners are Brazil (who are guaranteed a place as host nation), the place will go to the silver medallists. The individual champion will also win an Olympic spot for their nation, unless they are part of the winning team, in which case it will be passed down.

Equestrian eventing: The team gold medallists will earn a place in Rio, although if Brazil win, the place will go to the silver medallists.

Equestrian jumping: The top two teams – except the already qualified hosts Brazil and world champions the USA – will earn a place in Rio. The nations of the six best-placed riders in the individual event who are not part of a qualifying team, will also gain a berth.

Handball: The men’s and women’s gold medallists will qualify for the Olympic Games. If the winners are Brazil (who are guaranteed a place as host nation) or the future world champion (who will also qualify), their places will be passed down to the silver medallists.

Hockey: The Pan-Americans champions in both genders will qualify for the Rio 2016 Games. In the men’s competition, Brazil must finish among the top six to earn a host country place.

Modern pentathlon: Five Olympic spots per gender will be on offer, to be distributed to the top three athletes overall, as well as to best-placed athlete from South America and the best-placed athlete from North and Central America, within a limit of one spot per gender per country.

Sailing: Laser and Laser Radial sailors from the Americas who did not qualify at the world championships can earn Olympic places in Toronto.

Shooting: There will be 20 Olympic places up for grabs. There will be two places on offer in the men’s 10m air rifle, trap and skeet, and the women’s 50m rifle 3 positions and 10m air rifle. The rest of the events will offer one spot.

Synchronised swimming: The pairs champions will book their place in Rio, but if Brazil (who are already guaranteed a place as hosts) win gold, the silver medallists will win a place for their country.

Table tennis: In the singles competition, the top six Latin American players and the top three North American players will earn places in Rio.

Water polo: The gold medallists will qualify for the Olympic Games. If the winners are Brazil (who are guaranteed a place as host nation), their places will be passed down to the silver medallists.

What's going on with the Pan Am synchro spot? Commentator just said Brazil is likely to reject the spot because they don't want to finish last or fight it out with Egypt for last place?

That would be a shame.

In case that happens, the spot won't be re-allocate from the Pan-am games but instead will be re-allocated to the synchronized swimming test event where the last three (four if Brazil refuses their quota) team spots and the last eleven duet spots will be decided. So it's theoretically possible (but very unlikely) that no American team makes the synchro team event.

France men qualify for Rio 2016

France become the eighth men's team to qualify for the Olympic Games after winning the Rugby Europe Grand Prix Sevens Series in some style, while Spain go through to the global repechage tournament as runners-up.

IMG_1958.JPG

France completed a clean sweep of victories in this season's Rugby Europe Grand Prix Sevens Series after beating England 14-5 in the final of the last round in Exeter on Sunday. As a result, France are the eighth team to confirm their place at the men's sevens event at the Olympic Games at Rio 2016.

By reaching the semi-finals following pool victories over Romania, Germany and Portugal and an equally comfortable quarter-final win over Wales, France had already done enough to book their ticket to Rio as European champions, but they were determined to go one step further and add the Exeter crown to the titles they'd won in Moscow and Lyon last month.

Germany were duly beaten in the semi-final (24-5) before they completed their 18th win out of 18 in this Grand Prix Series with victory over England in the showpiece match at Sandy Park.

Spain’s appearance in the last four - they lost 19-0 to England in the semi-finals - ensured them of the European runners-up spot and a place in next year’s global repechage tournament.

After finishing between third and 12th in the overall series standings, Russia, Germany, Portugal, Belgium, Lithuania, Georgia, Italy and Romania still have a chance of qualifying for the Olympic Games. They will go forward to compete in next weekend’s European repechage qualifying tournament in Lisbon where they will be joined by Poland, Ukraine and Latvia, as the highest ranked sides in Division 1A of the Rugby Europe Grand Prix Sevens Series, and Division 1B winners Ireland.

Germany, Argentina, Netherlands, Australia, Belgium, Great Britain (World League)

The African, European, Pan-American and Oceanic championships are left.

So New Zealand now has to win the Oceania Cup to qualify for the Olympics. Will be interesting to see how seriously Australia takes the event considering they have already qualified for the Olympics. It's likely to come down between New Zealand or Ireland for the last quota.

It is very disappointing for New Zealand hockey to come down to this.
