2016 Olympic qualification kicks off at World Triathlon Yokohama

- As the first race of Olympic qualification period ahead of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, Yokohama holds special significance in this year’s World Triathlon Series. This Saturday marks the first opportunity to gain important points towards selection for a berth in Rio. And while the course may be flat, its technical bike corners require constant breaking from high speeds that guarantee a lingering burn for the athletes.

Yokohama will be the first race of the 2014 ITU World Triathlon Series that will see Javier Gomez (ESP), Jonathan Brownlee (GBR) and Alistair Brownlee (GBR) go head to head in combat. The trio will duke it out over a two-lap swim, nine-lap bike and four-lap standard distance course in the Yokohama harbour on Saturday. Meanwhile, the women will return all of its podium from last year with Jodie Stimpson (GBR) leading the charge, followed by Gwen Jorgensen (USA) and Emma Moffatt (AUS).

About the race:

The ITU World Triathlon Series returns to Yokohama for the fifth time. The series first appeared in Japan in 2009. The Japanese portal city skipped the 2010 series, but it reappeared on the WTS calendar in 2011. Due to the devastating earthquake, the event was postponed to later that year with ranking points counting towards to the 2012 season.

SCHEDULE:

Elite Women – Saturday 17 May – 10:00 (UTC/GMT +9)

Elite Men - Saturday 17 May – 13:00 (UTC/GMT +9)

FINA Releases 2016 Olympic Qualifying Procedure; Time Standards Held for December

FINA and the IOC had already released the qualifying procedures for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games for 4 out of 5 of the aquatic disciplines.

The IOC will again use the same A/B/Universality process that they used in the 2012 Olympics, but with a small but very significant tweak.

1.Any swimmer, up to two per event per country, who hit the FINA “A” standard can go to the Olympics, in the first priority.

2. The next priority will be athletes in relays, where the first 12 from the 2015 World Championships will go, and the remaining 4 spots in each event will go to the next-best 4 teams in the qualification period in approved qualifying events.

3. Up next will be the Universality places, where countries who have no swimmers with an “A” time or a selected “B” time may enter up to 1 man and 1 woman for Rio, presuming that man and woman competed at the 2015 World Championships. Each can swim in just 1 individual event. If a country has a male swimmer invited, they can invite 1 female swimmer under the Universality rules, and vice-versa.

4. Up to the cap of 900 swimmers (the same as London), FINA will begin inviting swimmers with “B” times. By July 5th, 2016, FINA will inform “B” standard swimmers of their invites (up to 1 “B” swimmer per country). The change, and this is significant, is that FINA may continue to invite swimmers with “B” standards above the 900 quota to ensure that every country represented at the 2015 World Championships will have an (eligible) swimmer at the Olympics.

Qualifying standards will be approved by the FINA Bureau in December 2014 at their meeting in Doha, Qatar, and should be announced then.

England nominated as lead nation for Team GB ahead of Rio 2016

11 July 2014

  • England to qualify on behalf of home nations for Olympic Sevens
  • Team must finish in top four of world series

England have been nominated by the British Unions as the lead nation to qualify on behalf of Team GB for both the men's and women’s sevens competitions in the first route to qualification for Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

For Team GB to qualify at the first opportunity, England – on the behalf of The Rugby Football Union, Scottish Rugby Union and Welsh Rugby Union – would be required to finish in the top four of this season's IRB Sevens World series.

Following the release of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and International Rugby Board (IRB) Olympic qualification systems the British Unions had previously agreed that the team who finished highest in the 2013/14 season would be the nominated lead for this season.

Should the England sides not qualify via this season's IRB Sevens World series, qualification for Rio 2016 Olympic Games can be achieved at the 2015 IRB Regional Championships and a final World Repechage.

A GB Sevens Company is in the process of being formed and will be put forward to the British Olympic Association (BOA) for recognition as the National Governing Body (NGB) in the near future.

Rugby Sevens will make its Olympic debut at the Rio 2016 Games.

Golf Qualification System for 2016 Olympics

07/14/14

14 July 2014, Hoylake, England: International Golf Federation officials confirmed today the qualification system that will be used for golf in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The announcement was made during a press conference at Royal Liverpool Golf Club, site of this week’s Open Championship, and follows ratification of the system by the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

As outlined by IGF President Peter Dawson, Vice President Ty Votaw and Executive Director Antony Scanlon, the following will apply:

In both the women’s and men’s events a field of 60 players will compete in a 72-hole stroke play format competition for the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. The 60 positions available in each event will be allocated through an Olympic Golf Ranking (OGR) list published on the IGF website, based on the player’s respective official world golf ranking as follows:

Players within the top-15 on the respective women’s and men’s official world golf rankings as of 11 July 2016 will be eligible, except that there will be no more than four players from any one country eligible within the top-15.

The balance of the field will be selected in order from 16th place onwards on the respective women’s and men’s official world golf rankings as of as of 11 July 2016, up to a maximum of 2 players per country for those countries not already having more than 2 players within the top-15.

A provision has been included for the host country, Brazil, which will guarantee that at least one Brazilian female and male golfer will compete in the Games if not otherwise eligible, based on position within the respective official world golf rankings. Another provision has also been included that each of the five continents of the Olympic Movement (Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania) will be guaranteed at least one athlete in each of the men’s and women’s events, if not otherwise eligible, based on position within the respective official world golf rankings. These provisions will not increase the field size beyond 60 athletes in each of the women’s and men’s competitions.

The two-year qualification period for the Olympic Golf Ranking will run from 14 July 2014 to 11 July 2016. Throughout that time, an OGR list will be published each week using the current women’s and men’s official world golf rankings at internationalgolffederation.org (showing the mock field for the event as if played that week using the rankings system). The IGF will publish the final OGR list as of 11 July 2016 following the conclusion of all eligible events.

“This is an important milestone on the road to golf's return to the Olympic Games in 2016,” Dawson said. “We are pleased to confirm the eligibility criteria and to give the athletes, National Olympic Committees and National Federations clarity on the qualification process. The world's best players now know what they must achieve to be part of golf's historic return to the Games in Rio de Janeiro."

England Sevens team will represent Great Britain as part of the special qualifications process worked out by the IOC, RFU and IRB as the only logical way to have a strong team in the event. To qualify, England needed to finish first of the Home Nations sides in points in the 2012/13 and 13/14 Sevens circuit as well as the strongest in points of the last two Six Nations annuals. Wales came second. CWGs results do not count.

First Olympic golf qualification rankings released

The first week of 2016 Olympic golf qualification is in the books, providing an extremely early glimpse of what the men’s and women’s fields could look like at the first Olympic golf tournaments since 1904.

Adam Scott and Stacy Lewis are No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking and the Rolex Rankings, respectively, and take up No. 1 on the men’s and women’s Olympic golf ranking lists. GolfChannel.com has the full men’s rankings and women’s rankings.

The rankings will change over the next two years as past tournament results lose value and results from tournaments to be played enter the equation.

The rankings are very different if you look at them from a “Race to Rio” standpoint — like the ATP’s “Race to London” — counting only tournaments played during the qualifying window, which started with last week’s events.

In that scenario, British Open winner Rory McIlroy would top the men’s rankings. He is from Northern Ireland but would represent Ireland at the Olympics, should he qualify and accept a spot.

The men’s and women’s fields for the 2016 Olympic golf tournaments are set to include a maximum of 60 players each. Everybody in the top 15 of the world rankings two years from now will be eligible, up to four per country.

After that, the fields will be filled by the next highest-ranked players with a maximum of two players per nation.

The current Official World Golf Ranking has all Americans beginning with No. 11 Jordan Spieth (and including No. 13 Phil Mickelson) on down the rankings not making the field because four other Americans are ranked higher. Yet the final man to make the field is No. 296 Ricardo Santos of Portugal.

Similarly, No. 12 Paula Creamer and every U.S. woman ranked lower than her does not make it, because there are four Americans in the top 11 of the Rolex Rankings. The last woman to make the current field, outside of the single host country spot for a Brazilian, is No. 545, Mia Piccio of the Philippines.

The men’s 72-hole, stroke-play tournament will be during the first week of the Olympics and the women’s tournament in the second week, according to reports.

The Rio Olympic Opening Ceremony is Aug. 5, 2016.

FIBA - Mexico Mexico to host 2015 FIBA Americas Championship

AN JUAN (FIBA Americas Championship) - FIBA Americas has announced that Mexico will host the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship, a qualifying tournament for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.

The tournament will be played in the Arena de Monterrey in the state of Nuevo Leon, Mexico.

The venue is a coliseum that hosts more than 150 concerts and shows every year, with a capacity of 17,559 spectators. It has also hosted two NBA pre-season games.

This continental championship already has nine qualified teams in the shape of Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela. The 10th participant, which is a spot allocated to the USA, will be confirmed following their result at the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

If the USA win the tournament in Spain (30 August-14 September), they will automatically qualify for the 2016 Olympics and therefore not have to play in the FIBA Americas Championship. This in turn would mean that Panama, who came in fifth at Centrobasket, will be the 10th participating team. If the USA do not win the FIBA Basketball World Cup, they will take their place in the field in Monterrey next year.

Germany, Great Britain and Netherlands the first countries to qualify for Rio 2016

Germany, Great Britain and the Netherlands became the first equestrian teams to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games on Tuesday (26 August). The European nations stamped their passports by taking the first three places in the dressage team competition at the World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France.

The German team of Isabell Werth, Helen Langehanenberg, Kristina Sprehe and Fabienne Lutkemeir won the competition with a total of 241,700 points. Britain’s Carl Hester, Charlotte Dujardin, Michael Eilberg and Jeanna Högberg came second with 231,343 points and the Dutch quartet of Adelinde Cornelissen, Hans Peter Minderhoud, Diederick van Silfhout and Eddward Gal took third with 227,400.

“It’s been very interesting, both yesterday and today, with brilliant, fantastic sport at a very high level. I want to say thanks to four young, pleasant and charming ladies who worked as a team together making us really strong,” said the head of the German team Klaus Roeser.

Will Connell, head of the British team, was equally pleased to have qualified for Rio. “As a team they only have two chances to qualify for the Rio Olympics. This is absolutely what we wanted and means that they have a two year run in to the Olympics, during which time they can bring on young horses and don’t have to worry about qualification," he said.

The World Equestrian Games will see eleven more teams qualify for Rio 2016 and three for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. The six Olympic spots for equestrian eventing will be decided on Sunday (31 August) with the five equestrian jumping places defined on 4 September. The three equestrian teams qualified for the Paralympic Games will be confirmed on Thursday (August 28).

British athlete Charlotte Dujardin, who delivered a near-perfect presentation riding Valegro received the best score in the first phase.

“We wanted to show the judges what we can do,” said the British athlete, currently number one in the world ranking and Olympic champion in the individual and team competitions in the London 2012 Games.

German athlete Isabell Werth, riding Bella Rose 2, came second, followed by compatriot Helen Langehanenberg on her horse Damon Hill NRW.

The remaining Olympic berths for equestrian teams will be decided in continental qualifying tournaments, with the world rankings qualifying individual riders. Olympic host Brazil has a place automatically guaranteed in each of the three equestrian disciplines.

By the end of 2014, a further six Olympic sports will have their first qualifiers for the Rio 2016 Games confirmed: basketball, sailing, shooting, football, hockey and handball.

WOW- Qualification has occurred, two years before the opening! Congrats to GB, GER and NED, on their way to Rio with their horsies!

Other European dressage teams will have to wait for Tokyo, 6 years away!

There used to be qualifications that happened even earlier (especially in shooting). I believe it's only since London that qualification events can't be more than 2 years before the opening ceremonies.

And actually (at least) three more European dressage teams will qualify.

The eight-day competition serves as the sole qualifier for the pool swimmers on the U.S. Olympic Team for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The 2016 Olympic Trials will conclude 34 days before the opening session of pool competition at the Olympic Games, slated for August 6, 2016. “As the marquee swimming event in the United States, the Olympic Trials have been elevated to the upper echelon of sports events,” USA Swimming Executive Director Chuck Wielgus said. “Athletes, families, fans, coaches and corporate partners enjoy a tremendous experience with compelling competition in CenturyLink Center Omaha, a wonderfully interactive engagement in the Aqua Zone, welcoming hospitality and the camaraderie of the entire swimming community.”

The 2016 Trials will mark the third consecutive Olympic cycle that the City of Omaha and the Omaha Sports Commission will host the Olympic Trials for swimming. Nebraska’s largest city was granted the bid in April 2013, after successful events as the home of the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Trials. Ticket information will be announced in the near future.

“The City of Omaha and the State of Nebraska are once again looking forward to hosting this incredible event in 2016,” Omaha Sports Commission President Harold Cliff said. “Participants and spectators can be assured that we will be doing our best to create an electric atmosphere, great support services, and most of all, the stage for America’s best swimmers to perform at their highest level.”

USA men's basketball team wins world title to guarantee place at Rio 2016 Olympic Games

It may not come as a great surprise, but the USA is the first team to book its place in the men’s basketball tournament at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The 14-times Olympic gold medallists confirmed their presence at the first Olympic Games in South America by winning the FIBA World Cup on Sunday (14 September), beating Serbia 129-92 in Madrid.

The team commanded by Mike Krzyzewski, or ‘Coach K’, became the first to win back-to-back world championships since 2002, living up to their tag of favourites by winning all nine games by more than 20 points to take their fifth world title, equalling the record held by Yugoslavia.

The USA men’s team is unbeaten since the 2006 world championships, having accumulated 63 consecutive victories.

Kyrie Irving, the top scorer in the final with 26 points, was voted the tournament’s most valuable player. His USA teammate James Harden second top scored with 23, as the USA netted 15 three-pointers. For Serbia, Nemanja Bjelica and Nikola Kalinic shot 18 points each.

“This is by far the biggest accomplishment in my life so far,” said Irving, who plays for Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA. “This is one of the greatest moments in my life. I did this with guys I can call my brothers for the rest of my life.

“You’re part of something bigger than yourself. I was willing to do anything that Coach K wanted. I just wanted to take every advantage I could playing with these guys and learning from these guys.”

Twelve teams will compete at the Rio 2016 men’s Olympic basketball tournament, with qualification also possible via the five continental qualifying tournaments in 2015, and the International Olympic Qualifying Tournament in 2016.

Brazil, as host nation, may have their place guaranteed through an invitation by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).

The first women’s basketball team to confirm its presence at Rio 2016 will be known at the start of next month, when the women's world championship is held in Turkey between 27 September and 5 October.

USA women's basketball team aiming to match the men by booking Rio 2016 spot

The USA women’s basketball team will be looking to match their male counterparts by booking their spot at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games when the world championships start this weekend. Two weeks after the US men became the first basketball team to qualify for Rio, 16 nations will go into battle at the FIBA World Championship for Women in Turkey, with the winner guaranteed a place at the first Olympic Games to be staged in South America.

And going on form, it seems likely that the USA will contest the final in Istanbul on 5 October. The defending world and Olympic champions are ranked no.1 in the world and boast a 25-game unbeaten run in Olympic and world championship tournaments. However, any chance of the seven-time Olympic champions being complacent was reduced by a recent 76-72 defeat by France in an exhibition game.

...

The tournament starts on Saturday (27 September) with eight matches, four in Istanbul and four in co-host city Ankara. The 16 teams will compete in four pools, with Brazil, Czech Republic, Japan and Spain in group A, while Canada, France, Mozambique and Turkey form group B. Group C comprises Australia, Belarus, Cuba and Republic of Korea , while group D is made up of Angola, China, Serbia and the USA. The first placed teams in each pool will advance directly to the quarter-finals, while the second and third placed sides will need to play an extra qualification round.

The FIBA World Championship for Women is the first women’s basketball qualifying event for Rio 2016. The other berths will be decided in five continental qualifying tournaments in 2015, and at the International Olympic Qualifying Tournament in 2016. Brazil, as host nation, may have their place guaranteed through an invitation by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).
