"We are starting a long process that will take several stages," explained Beth, told the UOL Sports. "We will choose the company and help it in developing mascot. This will take some time. The idea is to introduce the mascot after the middle of 2014. "

According to Beth, from the launch of the announcement, Rio 2016 will receive housing legal documents and portfolios of companies interested in creating a mascot. Only Brazilian companies can apply for the job. "We want to leave a legacy to market brands in the country," said Beth, on demand.

In January, companies that meet requirements established by the 2016 will be invited to a talk on committee's objectives for the mascot. "The mascot has to portray the essence of Rio's Olympics: passion and transformation, especially," said Beth.

The companies then create suggestions for characters, they are submitted to a committee of the Rio 2016. The committee will discuss the ideas with the companies. It also will test reception with the public to ensure that the suggestions meet the goals of the committee.

Finally, options mascot will be judged. The best option will be transformed into official symbol of the 2016 Olympics. Pereira the Piranha will rise again!!

Somehow, it's the first Olympic Games to have a GamesBids-official-alternative mascot!!!

Viva Pereira, o peixe-piranha!!!

The mascot's either gotta be Pereira ... or Juliana Paes!

I'd rather Juliana Paes to be the torch lighter... She already set fire in lots of people around here... ahahhaha

Nothing can surpass cute Caue. Is that how you spell him? That was a superb mascot.

I just wish there was a way for Rio to have a new color scheme for the look. I hope it will not just be the same as 2007 and the flag. Hopefully a brilliant agency will develope a look like no other, and where cliques are incorporated I hope they are as well done as Caue.

The Brazil World Cup mascot is fantastic - it'll be hard to top that. But Rio's organisers can at least give theirs a decent name. I understand the FIFA approved shortlist of mascot names hasn't gone down well in Brazil.

Rio 2016™ launches the Games Mascot selection process call for proposals

The public will get to know the two mascots during the second half of 2014

This Monday, November 5th, the Rio 2016™ Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games launched the call for proposals to select the mascot for the Olympic Games and another for the Paralympic Games. Essential to the spectator experience, the mascot reflects the host country identity and culture, and will be announced to the public around two years prior to the Games, during the second half of 2014.

The mascots are important message transmission vehicles for the world´s largest sports event, especially for children and young people. The process will receive consulting support from the Anima Mundi company and the final prize will be 50 thousand Brazilian Reais. The call for proposals is available online at: http://www.rio2016.c...ens-e-servicos.

“The idea in opening a selection process is to value the Brazilian animation, film and design market and encourage creativity to develop the best ideas. The theme is open. The creative proposal that best responds to the target public, children and young people, will be selected”, explains Brand Director Beth Lula.

Only Brazilian professionals and companies can compete

With the selection process, in which only Brazilian professionals and companies may participate, the Committee hopes to give impetus to the national market through a vote of confidence in the ability to create and develop characters. Self-employed individuals may also participate, as long as they are associated with a company, like animation or film production companies, design agencies, advertising and illustration studios. The goal is that both the Olympic and Paralympic mascots are aligned with the pillars of Rio 2016™ and the values of the Olympic and Paralympic Movement.

In phase one, legal and technical qualification, companies must present the necessary documentation and portfolio. 30 candidates will be selected for phase two and a proposal development briefing meeting will be held. For phase three, a maximum of ten proposals will be selected, and these will be adjusted and developed with the Rio 2016™ team.

Then, the proposals will be sent for research to see if they are in synch and aligned with the briefing. In this way, the proposals which reach phase four will be formatted so that the jury can access the best proposals. Selection of the winner must be unanimous. In commercial terms, Rio 2016™ estimates that the mascots will represent approximately 25% of licensed products sales.

Probably, it will...

But only after 2014, it seems Olympic Games are now respecting the "moment" of the World Cup and Confed Cup.

Not many news here about the games for a while...

I assume they're talking the Oly and the Para mascots. I doubt they even know themselves yet if there's going to be multiples for either.

Pereira will allow only one mascot for the Olympix!! He will eat all the others.

Paralympica is the other piranha who survived minus one fin.

Rio 2016™ brings together companies selected in phase one of the Mascots creation process The Committee organises a briefing to transmit the Olympic and Paralympic

Movements values, the Emblems essence and the Games Mascots role

This Monday, the 28th, the Organizing Committee for the Rio 2016™ Olympic and Paralympic Games held a briefing with the 15 companies selected during phase one of the Rio 2016™ Games Mascots

creation process. At the meeting, an overview of the Olympic and Paralympic movements was presented, as well as the essence of the Rio 2016™ Games Emblems, the Games Mascots role and the creative briefing’s technical details.

The President of Rio 2016™, Carlos Arthur Nuzman, took part in the opening and pointed out that the Mascots are an important milestone in each Games edition. “The Mascots mark the Games History. They are responsible for the emotional connection between the Games and the population”.

Chief Operations Officer, Leonardo Gryner, was also present and said that the Mascot’s development process is even more complex than the Emblem’s. “It’s the creation of a character, which needs to be available for various purposes”, he explains.

At the meeting, Andrew Parsons, President of the Brazilian Paralympic Committee, presented the Paralympic Movement values and emphasized that the Paralympic Mascot must reinforce what these

athletes do best. “Anybody capable of transmitting the sense of overcoming one´s limits through the Mascot, will have achieved the goal”, he points out.

After the briefing, the selected companies will develop their proposals together with the Rio 2016™ team for adjustments and sharpening. Thereafter, companies will be selected for phase three, in which the proposals will be evaluated by research. All phases are qualifiers. The final phase is the jury’s evaluation.
