PyeongChang welcomes international media

In the second week of November, the PyeongChang Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (POCOG) welcomed more than 200 representatives of the international media to PyeongChang for a World Press Briefing.

The four-day event in the host city of the 2018 Olympic Winter Games gave visiting media an overview of the preparations, including the test event programme for this winter, which get underway in November.

The briefing opened with a welcome speech from POCOG President Lee Hee-beom. The group was then shown detailed presentations of a range of functional areas to understand the progress being made and the milestones ahead. There was also an official Gala Dinner and an opportunity for guests to speak directly to the functional areas to get more details and updates.

The group was also taken on a series of venue tours. All of the venues in PyeongChang are located within a 30-minute drive of each other, which enabled the media to visit a total of 11 within the Mountain and Coastal Clusters during their visit. Many of these venues will be used in the coming months during the test events and training sessions.

Among those taking part in the briefing were a wide range of national and international news organisations as well as representatives from the International Olympic Committee, International Paralympic Committee, the Organising Committees of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 and the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022. Other host cities also attended, as well as National Olympic Councils and the International Federations of the Olympic Winter Sports.

Lee Jin-heung, Director General of Media Operations said: “The PyeongChang 2018 World Press Briefing was a meaningful opportunity to connect with local and international media while introducing the upcoming Games and host city.

“As excitement about the Games is growing, we hoped every participant left PyeongChang with a positive impression and better understanding of our current preparations for the Games."

The World Broadcasters Meeting, which is due to take place in February 2017, will follow a similar format, but the next main focus for POCOG will be the delivery of a busy winter season of test events.

The test events will take place between November and April. The FIS Snowboard (Big Air) World Cup – making its Olympic debut at PyeongChang 2018 – is next and will take place from 23-26 November. It will be swiftly followed by the ISU World Cup Short Track Speed Skating, which will take place from 17-19 December to round off 2016.

Ceremonies venue has been downsized to 35k from 50k

Source? Also that was the exact size of Albertville ceremonies stadium (and also the spectator capacity of Torino stadium during the 2006 olympics). Dunno if that would be a good or bad thing but its certainly good for costs.

That's Going To Take 1 Year To Complete Construction.

But it''ll only take one month to complete competition in the gamesBids logo comps:

GamesBids Olympic Logo Winners Cup - Pools C & D

We'll be seeing the best of this year's signs by early January.

PyeongChang 2018 opens first new venue in Gangneung

The Gangneung Ice Arena has been officially opened ahead of the ISU Short Track World Cup event this weekend, which will serve as a test event for PyeongChang 2018. In addition to short track, the 12,000-capacity venue, which took two and a half years to complete, will also host the figure skating competitions in 2018.

Located in Gangneung Olympic Park, the Ice Arena is one of the six newly built venues for PyeongChang 2018. It is the first of the ice venue in Gangneung to be completed, with three other ice venues scheduled for completion in the city by the end of 2016.

“The completion of the ice venues is a meaningful step for PyeongChang 2018,” reflected Gangwon Province Governor Choi Moon-soon. “The venues will be the centre of excitement during the Games. After PyeongChang 2018, they will be returned to the public and open doors for potential athletes and create new horizons for Gangneung residents.”

The IOC’s Gunilla Lindberg, who is chair of the PyeongChang 2018 Coordination Commission added: “I congratulate everyone involved in the construction of this venue for their hard work. I also wish good fortune to those that will operate this venue until the Games and beyond. Most of all, I wish good luck to all the athletes who will grace the ice in this stadium for the coming weekend and during the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018.”

The weekend’s event is expected to be a sell-out, so the athletes can expect an electric atmosphere as they race their way around the 111.12m track.  The programme includes 10 events - four individual competitions and men’s and women’s relays. A total of 104 male and 80 female athletes from 31 countries will be competing, with Japan, Canada, China, Netherlands, and Russia all especially well represented.

Among the athletes set to compete are Canadian siblings Charles and François Hamelin, Shim Suk-hee of the Republic of Korea and Wu Daijing of China. Charles Hamelin is a four-time Olympic medalist with three gold and one silvers, while Shim Suk-hee is the reigning world record holder in the women’s 1,000m.

Annoying questions:

1. Where are people going to stay

2. How are they going to get there.

Completing venues in a good thing... but transportation and hosing are important too. Don't suppose we will have high-speed rail from Seoul ready for 2017 test events.

For events at Gangneung (which has some summer beach tourism anyway), presumably they'll be using cruise ships for extra accommodation, as in Sochi.

The accommodation question is a good one as the planned new cruise ship harbour does not appear to be even under construction yet.  I did read the train should be ready by March 2017 - but again very little has been published about it and it will still be a 2 hour journey.  I'm assuming there will be buses to this venue cluster as it doesn't appear to be near a train station.  The venues are between two major roads though so access should be OK.
