baron-pierreIV
New discussion -- since they keep adding sports to the already crowded Olympic programmes: in view of future Olympic Games where new stadia, venues, etc., will have to be built -- which sports are the most environmentally-UNfriendly, and as such, should be dropped for the future. I say: 1. Track & Field! (And #2- ok, non-Olympic...NASCAR and F1!) Discuss.
Athensfan
Sport isn't generally too unfriendly environmentally. The ones that leapt to my mind are equestrian events because the carbon footprint is so big. But then I suppose world-class athletes jetting around the globe all have pretty big carbon footprints.... micheal_warren
I was thinking equestrian as well. But dont think any sport should be dropped due to their carbon footprint. Yes agree that Motorsport for the non-olympic sport.
Sir Rols
Unless your talking motor sports, surely it would come down to how much equipment is used and needs to be manufactured. In which case I'd say sailing. What about the winter sports - refrigerants used for snow making, or icing the lining of a bobsled track must take a bit of a toll as well? intoronto
I think all snow sports have a tremendous impact especially the venue builds. THe luge track in Whistler had all those trees cut down if I am not mistaken
zekekelso
If you look at the negative environmental impact per event, the Ceremonies are probably vastly more harmful than anything else.

BLASPHEMY! That doesn't count. The Olympics would not get any attention today without the Ceremonies! Stick to the question.
runningrings
Surely the white water events when held in artificial venues? All that power needed to create white water.

Imagine Rio was planning that 100-ft+ wall of water out in the Bay! Yeah, I think "white-water" and the bobsled-luge run which really rapes the pristine forests. Proposition Joe
Golf is a sport that requires a huge footprint in terms of land use. Also requires a lot of water and fertilizer in order to maintain the courses.

Hopefully it is dropped for 2024 and replaced with a low impact sport such as squash or karate.
