The Games officially kick off Sept. 19. Until now, the torch has been customarily lit in the host country. Incheon's organizing committee came up with the idea to light the torch both in the host country and in New Delhi, in order to acknowledge the sporting event's history. The idea has been accepted by the Olympic Council of Asia. The torch will travel through China to arrive in Incheon on Aug. 13, where it will be combined with another flame lit on Mt. Ikarus360 Posted August 12, 2014 Report Posted August 12, 2014 ^^ I like the idea of doing the lightning in Delhi. After all is the city where everything began, and the ceremonies each host had were sometimes weird and inconsistent, kinda like before the Pan Am Games established the tradition of lightning the torch in the Sun Temple at Tenochtitlan Video of the lightning, by the way.
gotosy Posted August 14, 2014 Report Posted August 14, 2014 North Korea lists athletes for Asian Games Seoul (AFP) - North Korea has submitted a list of athletes for the upcoming Asian Games in the South, organisers in Seoul said Thursday, despite stalled negotiations on its participation in the event. The list submitted Wednesday named 150 athletes to compete in 14 sports including football, swimming, boxing and judo, said a spokesman for the Asiad preparatory committee. It also listed a separate group of 202 coaches, referees and administrative staff, he said. Pyongyang has also suggested sending 350 cheerleaders to the Games to be held in the port city of Incheon from September 19 to October 4. But cross-border talks held last month to coordinate logistics fell apart after Pyongyang walked out, accusing the South of arrogance and insincerity. Seoul reportedly proposed to break from its past custom of financially supporting visiting sporting delegations from the North, to move into line with international sporting standards. The North bristled at the change and threatened to boycott the event. No talks have been held or proposed by either side since then. The Asiad organisers said they would push through the paperwork even without confirmation of the North's attendance. "We will watch how the governmental talks turn out but, in the meantime, will do what we have to do," the spokesman said. An official from the North is scheduled to travel to Incheon for the August 21 draw for events like football. Cross-border tensions have been high of late, with North Korea conducting an extended series of rocket and missile launches. gotosy Posted August 29, 2014 Report Posted August 29, 2014 North Korea scraps plan to send cheerleaders to Asian Games in South (Reuters) - North Korea has decided not to send a cheerleading squad to accompany its athletes at the Asian Games to be held in South Korea next month, a leading sports official said on Thursday. The reversal of an earlier pledge to send as many as 350 cheerleaders, who have been a popular attraction in their rare appearances in the South, follows weeks of tense negotiations between the rivals over the North's participation. The vice-chairman of the North's Olympic committee, Son Kwang Ho, announced the decision. "As the South side is so concerned about our cheerleading squad as to not wish its presence, we have decided not to dispatch the squad to the 17th Asian Games," Son was quoted as saying by the official KCNA news agency. Son said the North would send 150 athletes and officials to the Games in the city of Incheon. The two sides had resumed discussions this week to try to work out the details of the North's contingent, including the number of cheerleaders. In 2005, Pyongyang sent 101 cheerleaders, including Ri Sol Ju, who has since married North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, to the Asian Athletics Championships in Incheon. The North's cheerleaders have proved a huge draw in the South with tightly choreographed gymnastic routines and messages of peace and unification. The North had threatened to pull out of the Sept. 19-Oct. 4 Games, blaming the South for scuppering rare talks over the terms of hosting their delegation. A major issue of contention has been who will foot the bill for hosting North Korea's delegation. Reuters

world atlas Posted August 29, 2014 Author Report Posted August 29, 2014 The IAGOC unveils their plan for opening and closing ceremonies of 2014 AG. Writer Anna You Date 2014-08-29 The Incheon Asian Games Organizing Committee (IAGOC) had a press conference at the National Museum of Modern Art in Seoul on August 27 and announced their plan for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 17th Asian Games. Master of Korean films Lim Kwon-Taek is in charge of general production of the ceremonies and famous storyteller Jang Jin, who is also a playwriter, actor and film director, will take a role of artistic director. Executive producer Lim Kwon-Taek and artistic director Jang Jin made a presentation about the directing message and main ideas, participating specialists, and performing artists and “Hallyu” stars. Executive producer Lim remarked, “all the staff for this event is comprised of the best directing team and the best cast. Everyone is working hard to make the opening and closing ceremonies of the Incheon Asian Games, which begins in twenty days, festivals that build harmony and considerations for others.”and hoped that everyone pays close attention and will be able to participate in such a meaningful event. Artistic director Jang explained, “unlike the previous Asian Games and Olympics that focused on flaunting their national power, such as 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games, 2012 London Olympics, and 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2014 Incheon Asian Games won’t simply show off a scale but try to deliver a clear message, “4.5 billion Asians’ dream, Asia as one.” He expressed his conviction that the ceremonies will rouse all participants’ empathy with story-telling performances and unique choreography in harmony with Korean styled ideas and creativity. Jang announced detailed programs and artists for the ceremonies. The opening ceremony will start at 6pm at the Incheon Asiad Main Stadium and it will be composed of welcoming events, which will begin with poet Go Eun’s recitation of “Asiad Song” along with soprano Jo Su-Mi and Incheon Metropolitan Citizens Choir’s song, opening performances, cultural performances, torch lighting, and congratulatory performances. The main part of the opening performance will develop a story composed of four acts, from “Asia long time ago,” “Asia meeting through the sea,” “Asia as family and friends,” and to “Asia as one and future joining with today,” and Hallyu stars Chang Dong-Geon and Kim Soo-Hyun will lead the stories. Chang, a prominent Korean actor, will narrate the first story and Kim, also a famous actor, will appear through a video during the second stage. During the cultural performances of the opening ceremony, five musical stars, such as Ok Joo-Hyun and Michael Lee, will sing and classic artists, like violist Richard Yong-Jae O’Neil and cellist Song Young-Hoon, will follow with their beautiful playing. As part of the cultural performances, Korean traditional classic artist AhnSook-Seon’s “Pansori” will deliver a unique harmony of Korean traditional and classic music. Many K-Pop stars, such as JYJ, EXO, CNBlue, SISTAR, and PSY, will light up the ceremonies, and there are high expectations for Chinese pianist Lang Lang’s collaboration performance with K-Pop stars. In particular, JYJ, the PR ambassadors of the Incheon Asian Games, will sing “Only One”, the theme song of the Incheon Asian Games, as the torch is lit and the congratulatory performances of the opening ceremony will come to a great finale with PSY and other popular stars. During the presentation of the opening and closing ceremonies, the outfits of sign holders received much attention for their uniqueness as well as their beauty. They are designed with the national flowers of 45 participating countries based on “Hanbok,” Korean traditional dress Both the sign holders’ dresses and pickets that they are holding are made of “Hanji,” Korean traditional paper.
