Protests about N. Korea flag ahead of Asian Games

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea has removed the flags of all competing nations from its streets ahead of the upcoming Asian Games in Incheon because of protests about the flying of rival North Korea's flags.

The national flags of the 45 countries, including North Korea, had flown in Incheon and nine nearby cities since last Friday. But they were replaced by flags of the Olympic Council of Asia and ones bearing the Asian Games emblem following the complaints, according to the organizing committee.

South Korean prosecutors, police and other officials met Thursday and decided to allow North Korean flags to be hoisted only in limited places such as stadiums, sports venues and the athletes' village, according to a Seoul prosecution office. When North Korea attended previous major sports held in South Korea, such as the 2002 Asian Games and the 2003 University Games, its national flag was flown in such limited places, South Korean Unification Ministry spokesman Lim Byeong Cheol said.

Despite the North's participation in the games, animosity is high between the Koreas, which are separated by the world's most heavily armed border. North Korea has conducted an unusually high number of rocket and missile test-launches this year, expressing anger over U.S.-South Korean war games. South Korea has rejected the North's calls for improving ties, citing what Seoul says is a lack of sincerity.

North Korea is sending a 273-member delegation to the games, which includes athletes, coaches and judges, with a group of 94 arriving on Thursday. The North canceled its previous plans to dispatch cheerleaders in protest at what it calls Seoul's hostility.

North Korea boycotted the 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Summer Olympics, both in Seoul, but has since attended several other major sports events held in the South.

North Korean flags were hoisted along with other countries' flags in South Korea during the 2002 Asian Games in Busan and the 2003 University Games in Daegu when South Korea was ruled by liberal governments supporting greater reconciliation.

The two countries remain in a technical state of war since the 1950-53 Korean War ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty

^^ Yeah, despite the stadium is very nice looking, the long distance between the seats and field has been widely criticized in Skyscrapericity for example. I guess they might use the empty space for something.

For the sneak peaks I saw there will be lots of projections and animal creatures. It also seems the seats are going to use LED lights, since it seems to be the trend after London and Sochi did it.

The stage reminds me of Vancouver, though. Also the fact they raised the floor possibly means that we'll see objects coming out of the ground.

Asian Olympic boss unsure why Saudi Arabia excluded women

(Reuters) - Asia's top Olympic official is unsure why Saudi Arabia excluded women from their team for the Asian Games and says he thought the Islamic kingdom had "broken the ice" when they picked female competitors for the London Olympics.

Saudi Arabia is the only country among the 45 competing nations at the Asian Games, which start in South Korea on Friday under the slogan "Diversity Shines Here", to have selected an all-male team.

Their decision has drawn criticism from Human Rights Watch but Saudi officials have defended their stance, saying their female athletes were not "competitive" enough for the Asian Games, a multi-sports event held every four years.

Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, the president of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) that organises the Asian Games, said there were no rules forcing countries to pick females but he was surprised Saudi Arabia had not chosen any after being widely applauded for including women at the last Olympics.

"Saudi Arabia broke through the ice when they participated at the London Olympics with a female," he told Reuters in an exclusive interview.

"It showed they are ready, they are capable to have women participate.

"I don't know why they are not participating here, maybe for technical reasons."

Saudi team officials said they recently discussed the matter with the International Olympic Council (IOC) and had promised to include women in their team for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

But Human Rights Watch, which campaigned heavily for Saudi Arabia to include women in London in 2012, said the decision to exclude females from the Asian Games raised doubts about whether the ultra-conservative state was serious about change.

“Two years after the London Olympics, the time for excuses is over – Saudi Arabia needs to end its discrimination against women and ensure women’s right to participate in sport on an equal basis with men,” said Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East and North Africa director at Human Rights Watch.

“Refusing to send women to the Asian Games casts doubts on Saudi Arabia’s commitment to end discrimination and allow Saudi women to participate in future competitions."

^^ Yeah, I heard the attendance is also going to be kind of low. Seems that people in Incheon don't really care much about the games, but that might change once they start tomorrow. Either if it was lack of promotion of interest from their citizens i'm not sure.

Also, well, Saudi Arabia reasons can be easily explained. Since its the olympics, everyone in the world sees that and they would get more criticism, but since now they are in their own "comfortable zone", they don't need to keep lying themselves about their misogynism

very london 2012

More like Vancouver if you ask me

Btw I found those renders. Sorry for the low quality. For what I understood from the article, they're going to add a lone kid with a hop ring, kinda like the one at Seoul '88.

Can't find any listings of possible webcasts available in the US. Can't find any official app in English to follow on my phone. The website is a mess to navigate. It's Guangzhou all over again. Guess I'll be passing on these Games.
