baron-pierreIV 1693
Olympic Park - October 2012 What are: 1. Those buildings on the left (not the foreground but about midway up)? 2. WHich is the IBC? 3. What is the squarish one (well, like 2 rectangles on the roof) behind the round, bluish arena (left of Olympic stadium)? So, right in the middle foreground of the picture? zekekelso 794
Starting with the stadium (big skeleton building if it's not obvious) and working clockwise you first see a oval building surrounded by bluish stripes. That's Shayba... the smaller hockey venue. The boxy building below Shayba in the picture ( or outside the main circle of builidings) are the practice hockey rinks. Next building clockwise from Shayba - big, mostly white with a black stripe - is Bolshoy, the bigger hockey rink. Continuing clockwise, you'll see a small building for curling, and a giant building for speed skating. If you follow the space between the curling and speed skating venues going out from the circle of buidlings, you'll see a road. The construction on the right side of that road is the IBC (obvious vertical white lines). On the left will be the village (surrounding the lake).
gotosy 493
Sochi Bobsled Track Cleared to Host International Events Sanki Sliding Center The newly built bobsled and luge track for the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi has been cleared to host international events, after the president of the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation certified it Friday. Ivo Ferriani signed the official certificate during a meeting with Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko after visiting the Russian Cup at the track. The first international competition to be held at the Sanki Sliding Center will be the ninth and final stage of the World Cup in February. “Now the bobsled and luge track is ready for international competition,” Ferriani said. “I’ve seen great organization at the Russian Cup.” The track is the world's longest at 1.8 kilometers, and had its first test event in March at the Russian Championships. ... http://en.ria.ru/spo.../176939133.html
PyroKinesis 61
Beautiful stuff. Beautiful. The bobsled track is going to be somewhat enclosed all the way down?
baron-pierreIV 1693
Funny, a new white snake-elephant opens while only an 8-year old one in Torino closes. Doesn't look good for this one either.

gotosy 493
IOC member praises Sochi Olympics bobsled track MOSCOW, Nov. 2 — Prince Albert II of Monaco, a member of the International Olympic Committee, has hailed the bobsledding venues in Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi where the 2014 Winter Olympics will be held. Prince Albert II visited Sochi’s Sanki Sliding Center on Thursday and “highly praised” the bobsled track in Sochi, local media reported on Friday. The prince went to the venue along with Russian Olympic Committee President Alexander Zhukov, President of Russian Bobsled Federation Georgy Bedzhamov and President of the International Bobsled and Skeleton Federation Ivo Ferriani. The Sanki bobsled, luge and skeleton track currently hosts the Russia Cup test competitions in preparations for the upcoming Olympic Games. Next Monday, the International Training Week is slated to start in Sochi. Under the theme of “Hot. Cool. Yours.”, the Sochi Olympics will be opened on Feb. 7, 2014 and run until Feb. 23. The Games will feature 98 medal events, which is 12 more than those of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada. In winter 2012-2013, a series of test competitions will be held in the Olympics venues. http://www.nzweek.co...ed-track-20565/

But you know, once they remove 3 of those stadia, the area will lose it symmetry. What will fill in those empty spaces where there was once great competition?

baron-pierreIV 1693
Which are temporary? I'm not up to speed on the details of Sochi's venues. I may have overstated "3." I think the 2 bluish ones are going elsewhere -- one to Kazan, I think. And I don't know where the other one will go to.
runningrings 678
But you know, once they remove 3 of those stadia, the area will lose it symmetry. What will fill in those empty spaces where there was once great competition? From what I understand (from what I saw on a special on Sochi 2014 on RT during the London Olympics) the site will undergo a similar post-Games transformation to London, which will include low-rise commercial buildings, a shopping mall, and more hotels. Obviously Sochi Olympic Park will indefinitely host the Russian Grand Prix into the future, and the 2018 World Cup. Sochi 2014's Olympic Park has a more impressive post-Games plan than many recent Summer Olympic hosts.
