JMarkSnow2012
Finally some progress through the murk surrounding the stadium deal: Campaigners for transparency over West Ham’s move to the Olympic Stadium have scored a major victory after the Information Commissioner ruled the terms of the deal should be made public, the Guardian can reveal. Both the London Legacy Development Corporation and West Ham had long argued that the deal for the largely-taxpayer-funded stadium should remain buried beneath a sea of black ink for reasons of commercial confidentiality. The decision could be embarrassing for the London mayor, Boris Johnson, who was desperate to conclude a deal with a football club to give the stadium a sustainable future, and West Ham, battling to convince the public the terms do not amount to a taxpayers’ subsidy for a rich football club.It may also reopen the argument over whether the LLDC broke European state-aid rules, after the Guardian revealed earlier this year that it had failed to apply to the European Commission for an exemption.Following a convoluted Freedom of Information process started last September by the Charlton Athletic Supporters’ Trust, the Information Commissioner has ruled that the commercial terms under which the east London club will become the stadium’s anchor tenants next summer must be published. The Tower Bridge Fox
I just heard Anish Kapoor is leading artists on a walk from the Royal Academy of art to the Orbit in the Olympic park in support of refugees. when I lived in London I walked to the Olympic park many times along the canal Its the best way to get to the Olympic park , I feel anyone who didn't do this during the Olympics missed something special. I have a feeling though that Anish Kapoor will be walking along the road to people can join along the way.

JMarkSnow2012
Any pics of Olympic Stadium dressed up in full Rugby mode for the World Cup out there? At the time of writing, the "live feed" webcam (which may actually be a 24-hours ago view) is showing big banner things being hoisted up by cherry-pickers for fixing over the entrances. Rob2012
Any pics of Olympic Stadium dressed up in full Rugby mode for the World Cup out there? Externally, I'm not sure it's going to be 'all that' - the stadium's still in transition before West Ham move in in 2016.... After Rugby and the Race of Champions, they'll start installing an LED "wrap". Until then, it's a bit more low-tech. These from yesterday... http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=127161702&postcount=9951 Hopefully for the Rugby the guys in charge of the feed will stick to helipcoptor shots! Alexjc
Interesting birds eye view... Very much in transition mode with all that reconstruction gear hanging about. That LED wrap is gonna look cool. Should've done the same for Twickers...improve it's brutalist look as mentioned elsewhere.

JMarkSnow2012
This Daily Mail photo really shows up (indeed, I suspect, exaggerates) the gaps behind the lower seating ranks in football / rugby mode:
TorchbearerSydney
Oh dear, it doesn't really reconfigure into a rectangular stadium that well (being round). Have yet to seen a stadium that does athletics to football perfectly, but SA and Stade de France do some pretty good jobs of it.
Rob2012
SA can't go back to athletics. The best comparison here is sdf.

London's problem is, and always was, that athletics got ripped off by nu-Wembley.

JMarkSnow2012
This unsurprising news just in from Aisha Gani of The Guardian: The Olympic Park’s Orbit tower is losing money and costing Londoners £10,000 a week, a senior Labour member of the London assembly has said. Len Duvall, member for Greenwich and Lewisham, claimed that the ArcelorMittal Orbit tower had lost £520,000 – or £10,000 a week – based on its 2014/15 report, despite having forecast a profit of almost £1.2m in its business plan. The attraction, however, has lost around half a million pounds after only 124,000 people visited between April 2014 and March 2015, Duvall found in his analysis of costings.[continues]

JMarkSnow2012
Maybe the slide will make a difference. People love slides (see Tate Modern / Hayward) It may make things worse! The figures in the LLDC annual report show the Orbit costs well over twice as much to run as the Aquatics Centre and the Copper Box combined! Incidentally, the extraordinary thing about the Aquatics Centre and Copper Box figures is the lack of income- just £150,000 between the two venues. Even assuming that nearly all users take full advantage of the "Better" membership schemes that still suggests a remarkably low level of use for facilities which are open 15 or 16 hours a day. TorchbearerSydney
Wow- interesting figures. The Orbit is tacky and should be pulled down. Interesting to hear about the Aquatic Centre, they usually do OK and I would have thought London could do with a great pool. Sydney's has been a hige success since day 1, even Beijings was packed when I was there last.

Thinking about it, particularly the neatness of that £150,000 figure, I suspect that we're seeing a result of the management deal with Greenwich Leisure (GLL). The expenditure shown in the LLDC accounts may be the last tranche of the conversion costs, and the £150,000 may be a net payment from GLL after their own costs have been deducted. Unfortunately, GLL now manage so many leisure centres across the country that their accounts don't give figures for individual facilities. Next year's accounts (the first full year of operation for the Aquatics Centre) may give us a better idea.
