Owing to heavy rain and flooding in Buenos Aires, the broadcast feed during the Madrid 2020 presentation was temporarily suspended.

The International Olympic Committee apologises for the inconvenience, but would like to reiterate that Madrid’s presentation to the 125th IOC Session continued without incident and that the vote for the election of the 2020 host city will not be affected in any way.

After having elected Tokyo as the host city of the 2020 Olympic Games, the IOC Session is set to make another major decision on Sunday by determining the composition of the 2020 Olympic programme.

Two votes are scheduled – the first on the 25 core sports for the 2020 Olympic programme and the second on the possible inclusion of an additional sport for the 2020 and 2024 editions of the Games, both based on proposals by the IOC Executive Board (EB). Baseball/softball, squash and wrestling* were shortlisted for selection by the Session in May following an extensive evaluation by the Olympic Programme Commission of the sports seeking to enter the programme.

The Session is being broadcast live on www.olympic.org. The decision on the core sports is expected at around 10.15 a.m., while the vote on the possible inclusion of an additional sport is scheduled for noon. All three sports will deliver 20-minute presentations to the IOC membership followed by 10-minute Q&A sessions ahead of the vote.

The results will be announced in the Session room directly after each vote.

IOC Session approves 25 core sports for 2020 Games

08/09/2013

During its meeting at the 125th IOC Session currently taking place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the full IOC membership today agreed on the 25 sports that will form the core for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. Tokyo was elected as the host city of the 2020 edition yesterday.

The 25 sports, as proposed by the IOC Executive Board (EB) in February, are: athletics, rowing, badminton, basketball, boxing, canoeing, cycling, equestrian, fencing, football, gymnastics, weightlifting, handball, hockey, judo, aquatics, modern pentathlon, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, shooting, archery, triathlon, sailing and volleyball.

Wrestling, governed by the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles (FILA), will not be included on the list of core sports after Rio 2016, but, together with baseball/softball and squash, will vie for possible inclusion as an additional sport for the 2020 and 2024 editions of the Games in a second vote at around noon today. These three sports were shortlisted by the IOC EB in May to be put forward to the Session following an extensive evaluation by the Olympic Programme Commission.

In an effort to ensure the Olympic Games remain relevant to sports fans of all generations, the Olympic Programme Commission systematically reviews every sport following each edition of the Games.

Golf and rugby sevens were added in 2009 as additional sports to the 2016 and 2020 Olympic programme.

September 8 - An unexpected absentee so far from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session at the Hilton hotel in Buenos Aires has been Patrick Chamunda, the member from Zambia.

The IOC told insidethegames that Chamunda, 68, is in hospital after being stricken by what it described as an "acute condition".

While said to be "improving", the IOC explained it was not yet clear when Chamunda would be discharged from hospital.

Chamunda, President of his National Olympic Committee, was one of 95 IOC members who had travelled here to take part in the four-day Session.

But the illness meant he missed the vital vote yesterday on which city should host the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics, which was awarded to Tokyo, and also today's on which sport should be included on the programme for the Games in that year.

He could have been a vote for Madrid! Wow the what ifs that arise.
