Chelsea have announced that manager Roberto Di Matteo has parted company with the club, who cite in a statement that the results "have not been good enough".

Di Matteo's future was the subject of intense speculation after Chelsea suffered a 3-0 defeat in the Champions League at Juventus on Tuesday, meaning they could become the first holders to exit the competition at the group stage.

A statement released on the club's official website on Wednesday morning confirmed the Italian's departure. It read: "Chelsea Football Club has parted company this morning with Manager Roberto Di Matteo.

"The team's recent performances and results have not been good enough and the owner and the Board felt that a change was necessary now to keep the club moving in the right direction as we head into a vitally important part of the season.

"The club faces a difficult task ahead in qualifying for the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League as well as maintaining a strong challenge for the top of the Premier League while competing in three other cup competitions. Our aim is to remain as competitive as possible and challenge strongly on all fronts.

"The owner and the Board would like to thank Roberto for all he has done for the club since taking over in March. Roberto helped guide us to an historic Champions League victory and a seventh FA Cup. We will never forget the huge contribution he has made to this club's history and he will always be welcome at Stamford Bridge.

"The club will be making an announcement shortly regarding a new first team manager."

UEFA Considers Scrapping Europa League

President Michel Platini says UEFA is in an “ongoing debate” about scrapping the Europa League in favor of an expanded Champions League for the 2015-2018 competitions cycle.

“We’re discussing it,” he told French daily Ouest-France on Wednesday.

“We will make a decision in 2014.”

Revenues from the second-tier Europa League typically amount to around a sixth of the Champions League’s annual $1.73 billion, most of which goes to the 32 clubs that reach the group stage.

Any potential expansion would likely involve 64 teams in the group stage.

Uefa reduce 2013 Champions League final ticket prices

Uefa has responded to growing concerns over

the high cost of watching football in England by reducing the cheapest

ticket for this year's Champions League final at Wembley to £68.

European football's governing body was accused of

exploiting supporters when the match was last staged in London two years

ago -Barcelona beat Manchester United 3-1- by charging £176 for the cheapest ticket.

Uefa will announce later on Friday that it has listened

to that criticism and lowered prices for the showpiece match, which

takes place on 25 May, after consulting football fans across Europe.

"It is correct we should give the opportunity to everyone to go

to the match irrespective of their financial conditions," a spokesman

said.

But many supporters may still view the entry level

price of almost £70 as too high - even for what is arguably the biggest

game of the season.

Only 13,000 of the 59,000 tickets on general sale will

be priced in this new low category. The rest will be sold at much higher

prices ranging from £140 to £330.

This year's competition resumes next week with

Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Celtic, Arsenal, AC Milan and

Bayern Munich all involved in the last 16 ties.

And some fans may still question why 20,000 seats are

not being put on sale to the general public. Uefa hold back these

tickets for sponsors, commercial partners and officials and

administrators from European and world football.

Uefa's response is nevertheless a sign that football's

authorities may be aware of the increased sensitivity around the cost of

watching football - particularly in England where some Premier League

clubs have been accused of ripping off away supporters.
