msp2032
What do you think were the strangest opening or closin ceremonies that you remember? Three stick out in my mind 3.Athens:The pregnant girl with her belly light up. The MRI image of a brain and of course the cigarette shaped cauldron. 2. Torino:The skaters with the flames on their back. The acrobats climbing up the wall. The clown band(or was it the Standford band in disguise?) playing YMCA 1. Albertbville:The Strangest Opening Ceremony I can remember. The people walking on stilts. The giant horns, The women in the snowballs. TThe little girl singing " La Marseille" and the angels floating above as the cauldron went out.
intoronto
I agree with Albertville. The parade of nations flagbearer wore odd designs.
Victor Mata
This thread should be called 'The Alberville Awards'.
baron-pierreIV
The parade of nations flagbearer wore odd designs. Not quite as tacky as the recent 2012 placard-bearer gals.
paul92
Not quite as tacky as the recent 2012 placard-bearer gals. Olympian2004
True, those London placards were one of the ugliest I remember in Olympic history. The Albertville bubbles at least made sense (recreating snow globes).
Olympian2004
My strangest opening ceremony moment probably is that ugly scene when the goose-stepping athletes carried the Olympic Flag into the stadium in Moscow, accompanied by also goose-stepping athletes clutching doves. We just discussed it in the ceremony YouTube clips thread. That moment really makes me want to barf. But I also despise that extremely corny and eerie "Greek chariots" segment at the start of Moscow's opening ceremony, with those "priestesses" and "Olympic gods/slaves/whatever" accompanying the chariots either showing a frozen fake smile or an extremely grim face. I'm surprised that that scene hasn't appeared in my nightmares yet. Baron has often complained that the Athens opening ceremony lacked joy. I think one should definitely give this prize to Moscow's opening ceremony which felt cold, repressed and militaristic.

I think one should definitely give this prize to Moscow's opening ceremony which felt cold, repressed and militaristic. Ever since I worked at the UN, where I had to process accreditations of the delegations coming in for the fall's General Assembly -- and SEEING the USSR 'delegates' (wink - wink; great cover for their real KGB identities) ID photos close up, I've never expected to meet happy and truly joyful Russians. All of them, their spouses, were all grim, glum and dour in their file photos! Similarly, I never expected to see smiles from the Moscow 1980 performers...other than from the little pixie gymnasts who knew no better. It was a chore; they were all recruited into doing it -- and I am sure their bosses and supervisors were NO less joyful. (Same thing with the Sarajevo opening; they were also ALL so serious.)
