NTT Becomes First Domestic Sponsor of 2020 Tokyo Olympics

Tokyo Olympic organizers have signed up Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation as the first domestic sponsor of the 2020 Games.

NTT, which provided a variety of telecommunications services for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, will be the organizing committee's official telecommunications services partner.

Tokyo organizers and NTT did not release financial terms of the deal.

NTT is the largest telecommunications company in the world in terms of revenue. Established as a government-owned corporation in 1952, NTT was privatized in 1985 to encourage competition in the telecom market.

Tokyo's domestic sponsorships are separate from the global TOP sponsorship program run by the International Olympic Committee. Japanese tire manufacturer Bridgestone and Panasonic are among worldwide sponsors.

Tokyo 2020 secures Asahi as second domestic gold partner

okyo 2020 organisers have confirmed Asahi Breweries as its second gold partner, just a day after telecoms firm NTT became the first.

Gold partner is the highest level of domestic sponsorship being sold by the Tokyo 2020 organising committee, with reports last week suggesting a minimum fee of US$128 million. Asahi Breweries fills the beer and wine category.

Announcing the Asahi deal on Tuesday, Tokyo 2020 president Yoshiro Mori said: "Asahi Breweries has an excellent slogan, which translates roughly as 'Let’s share the emotion', and this slogan very much echoes the efforts of the Tokyo 2020 organising committee to support athletes in their endeavours and to provide a stage where that emotion can be shared."

Mori added: "During the Games, the whole of Japan will be raising their glasses and cheering on the athletes, and we are looking forward to working closely with Asahi Breweries to share the emotion of the Tokyo 2020 Games.”

Asahi Breweries president Akiyoshi Koji said: "Asahi Breweries has been supporting Japan with courage and energy as a JOC [Japan Olympic Committee] gold partner.

"We are greatly looking forward to support not just the Japanese national team, but also every single athlete competing in the Games, allowing them to perform beyond their limits, and convey the message of the magnificence of having hopes and dreams to the children who bear the future.”

Tokyo 2020's marketing plan has been put together and will be executed by advertising giant Dentsu, which has guaranteed the local organising committee a sum of just under US$1.5 billion. It envisages ten gold partners, each paying around US$130 million each. Below that will be a group of sponsors designated as official partners, each likely to be paying around US$50 million. The third domestic sponsorship tier will be official supporters, with companies paying between US$8 million and US$25 million.

A January report in the Japan Times newspaper also suggested last week that seven domestic partners, including NTT, Asahi and Toyota Motor Corporation, agreed deals before Christmas with the Japanese Olympic Committee. Those deals are scheduled to last for four years and are worth around US$5 million each.

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/feb/03/japan-olympic-row-j-pop-band-akb48-opening-ceremony

There has been a lot of backlash from the entertainment industry and the public against AKB48 participating in the opening ceremony, given that the man who created the group is part of the executive board of TOCOG. Some have said that they would be an embarrassment to the rich Japanese culture, and I have to agree.

If Japan wants to have that grand show they never really had in Nagano or any other games they have hosted, they should have an Athens-like ceremony like some have suggested, that is very peaceful and demonstrates the culture in a very artistic way.

If Japan wants to have that grand show they never really had in Nagano or any other games they have hosted, they should have an Athens-like ceremony like some have suggested, that is very peaceful and demonstrates the culture in a very artistic way.

If London had the audacity of putting Dizzie Rascal, along with that mess of an opening ceremony that included a ridiculously cheesy NHS number and the Frankie & June segment that was better suited for the closing ceremony, as well as Jessie J and Tinie Tempah in the closing ceremony, then Japan has nothing to lose by putting them in the opening or closing ceremony, preferably closing ceremony.

And this is a nation that is well-known for Hello Kitty, it's kooky game shows, weird and confusing arcade games, and a downtown that rivals if not surpasses Time Square. Japan may an overall refined culture feeling, but Tokyo has been far from that. I don't mind if they do something that highlights their culture like Beijing did, but to avoid how modern and kooky they actually are will be pretty damn boring. They've got to laugh at themselves too, so in some capacity they have to highlight this type of music as well. If not, they're going to make for a pretty boring opening/closing ceremonies.

BTW, that's not the worst that has come out of Japan. Not sure if anyone here knows them, but Hinoi Team was pretty out there.

Yes I think the Japan needs to display its schizophrenic nature- zen gardens and Godzilla, exquisite formal lacquer/ fabric/ metalwork and manga, kimonos and harajuku girls, timber screened paper rooms and bullet trains. Japan is quintessential ancient and modern living together- that is one of its great achievements and appeal. That is its edge.

(Agreed about the god awful mess of London's OC after Pandemonium)

I don't know how the hell I didn't think of Godzilla and manga/anime when I wrote my comment lol. They're pretty much what most people in the world will know Japan for! I will be super pissed if they don't have a sequence that represents Anime there. Maybe Pikachu and Hello Kitty should make an appearance. Hell, make them the mascots people around the world already know and love them!

I'm pretty surprised the IOC have allowed Tokyo 2020 to sign up Canon, with Panasonic as a TOP sponsor. But good for Tokyo anyway.

Japan to name separate minister in charge of 2020 Olympics

An independent Cabinet minister in charge of the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics and Paralympics appears to be on the horizon after a special measures bill was approved by a Lower House committee to establish the new post.

The Committee on Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology OK'd the bill on April 24, and it is likely to pass the Diet in the current session. The new Cabinet minister could be picked by the end of May.

As a supplementary provision to the special measures bill, the committee added a stipulation that the number of Cabinet ministers be increased by one from the current 18.

The bill is intended to make it easier for government organizations to coordinate preparations for the 2020 events by creating the ministerial post.

One of the candidates for the post is Toshiaki Endo, a former senior vice minister of education.

The special measures bill also stipulates that the government will set up a headquarters to promote the Olympics and Paralympics with the participation of all Cabinet ministers and the prime minister.

The bill also reads that the government will work out basic policies to proceed with the preparations smoothly.

Hakubun Shimomura, the current education minister, has been pulling double duty in charge of Olympics affairs since Tokyo was named the host city in 2013.

We must not be far off an announcement regarding the release date of the logo and look of the 2020 Games. I'm looking forward to what Tokyo delivers. Not a fan of their bid logo at all (again, Honolulu 2020)
