Olympic medalists to march in Ginza parade to boost 2020 Games bid

The Japan Olympic Committee (JOC) announced yesterday that on Monday of next week, all 76 medal-winning athletes will participate in a parade through Tokyo’s Ginza district. The JOC says that this is the first time such a parade has ever been attempted. The celebration will be held in part to honor the athletes and their achievements in London, but also to increase the spirit and support of Tokyo’s bid to host the 2020 Games, says JOC President Tsunekazu Takeda.

The parade is scheduled to start at 11 am on Monday, and will travel a distance of around 1 kilometer through Ginza with the use of two convertibles and five buses. Among those to be celebrated will be both the three-time gold medal winning women wrestlers Saori Yoshida and Kaori Icho, as well as overall gymnastics champion Kohei Uchimura. Also there will be the entire Nadeshiko Japan team, the celebrated national women’s soccer team that won the silver medal. The Japanese athletes brought home a total of 38 medals from the London Games, setting a new high for the country.

London victory parade brings Tokyo to standstill

2012-08-20T071155Z_1_CBRE87J0JZX00_RTROPTP_2_OLY-AROUNDWORLD.JPG

Japan's Olympic medallists brought downtown Tokyo to a standstill on Monday in an open-top bus victory parade witnessed by around 500,000 flag and fan-waving supporters.

The convoy of five buses caused gridlock as fans and shoppers in Tokyo's upmarket Ginza district help celebrate Japan's record haul of 38 medals (seven gold, 14 silver and 17 bronze) at the London Olympics.

People working in offices above street level leant precariously out of windows to cheer as the athletes navigated through a vast sea of supporters in Japan's first Olympic celebratory parade of its kind.

Attended by 71 of the country's 76 medallists in total, the athletes, sporting their red Olympic jackets, waved as fans crammed the pavement in sweltering summer heat and screamed their names and messages of congratulations.

One athlete carried placards in support of the northeast region of Japan devastated by last year's deadly tsunami.

"Japan's sportsmen and women have done so much to lift spirits since last year's disaster," 33-year-old sales assistant Yurie Miyajima told Reuters. "They were fantastic in London."

Some of the biggest cheers were reserved for the Japanese women's soccer team, who took the silver medal in London after their stunning World Cup success in Germany last year.

Japan's 'Nadeshiko' team - named after a frilly pink carnation - had come to embody the spirit of a nation battling to recover from the tsunami and subsequent nuclear crisis.

The convoy of vehicles were adorned with Tokyo 2020 logos, and Japanese Olympic Committee President (JOC) Tsunekazu Takeda promised the country would push ahead with its proposed bid.

FIFA Under-20 Women's World Cup showcases Tokyo 2020 bid

Tokyo 2020 are hoping that its successful hosting of the under-20 Women's World Cup, which is currently being attended by FIFA President Sepp Blatter, is helping demonstrate how the Olympics and Paralympics could help Japan recover from the earthquake and tsunami which struck the country last year.

Among the venues being used is Miyagi area of Japan, which was particularly badly hit by the disaster in March 2011, but is still playing a major role in the FIFA Under-20 Women's World Cup by hosting six matches.

...

Another venue which has been staging games during the tournament is the iconic Kasumigaoka stadium in Tokyo, which was the main venue for the 1964 Olympics held in the Japanese capital.

..

It is also the site of the proposed main stadium for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympics if Tokyo fends off competition from Madrid and Istanbul to win the right to host the event.

..

The ground is also the host stadium of the Japanese national team, and will host this weekend's final, which will be a good opportunity to impress Blatter, who, as a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), will have a vote on September 7 next year the election is due to take place.

The Tokyo 2020 President Tsunekazu Takeda, also the Japanese Olympic Committee President, was thrilled that the Kasumigaoka was playing a part in this year's World Cup.

"The Kasumigaoka National Stadium site is a symbol of Japan's commitment to maintain the legacy of the 1964 Olympic Games," said Takeda.

"We are delighted women's football is gaining popularity both domestically and internationally, and believe this is great for international sport.

"The FIFA Under-20 Women's World Cup Japan 2012 is showcasing Tokyo's amazing ability to host world-class events, and we are fully leveraging these same skills and know-how in our bid to host the world in 2020."

The World Cup concludes on Sunday (September 9), when the United States face Germany in the final, with Japan taking on Nigeria for third place.

These pictures should help allay public support worries.

I agree with Baron that Nagano lacked sizzle, but I'm optimistic that the Japanese have learned that they need to offer a bit more zing.

Rio is going to have sizzle to spare anyway. Japan can take a cue from them or pose a contrast with something elegant and sophisticated. Either way, I think they can deliver something good.

The London Games have raised the bar for the Olympic Movement, so Tokyo will spare no effort in reaching for an even higher level of achievement."

Japanese Paralympians passed several milestones during the London 2012 Paralympic Games, including the country's first-ever team gold, courtesy of the women's goalball team. Perhaps Japan will be the country to take on Athens ceremonies? It sure won't be Rio. A version of 2004 depicting Japanese history would be mindblowing.

(although i'm still backing Istanbul!)

Tokyo 2020 secures sixth bid partner

Japan's bid to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games has received a further boost after All Nippon Airways Co. (ANA) signed up to become Tokyo 2020’s sixth official bid partner.

The airline, one of the largest carriers in the Asia-Pacific region, will work with the Tokyo 2020 Bid Committee and its other bid partners – Asics, Descente, JTB, Mizuno and Kinki Nippon Tourist – to bring the Games to Japan’s shores in eight years’ time.

Tsunekazu Takeda, an IOC member and president of the Tokyo 2020 Bid Committee and the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC), said: "I welcome ANA, one of Japan's leading firms in the transportation industry, as the sixth official Tokyo 2020 bid partner. Today's announcement is further demonstration of the passionate support that Tokyo 2020 is receiving from all levels of Japanese society.”

ANA is already the official airline partner of the JOC, supporting Japan's elite athletes at international sporting events. The company also sponsors Ai Fukuhara, who was a member of Japan’s silver medal-winning London 2012 table tennis team.

Sports Features Communications

October 5 - The Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra brought music, culture and sports together in Tokyo on October 4th for an evening of celebration of the Olympics. The concert featured famous classical music played to accompany highlights from the 2012 Olympic Games in London projected on a large screen.

Tokyo Philharmonic conductor Yukio Fujioka led his orchestra in a series of popular classical melodies and famous movie theme songs. Meanwhile, the London medalists got to see their performances on the giant screen behind the orchestra.

The concert was held at the Tokyo International Forum. The Forum is being put forward as the weightlifting venue in Tokyo’s 2020 Games plan presentation to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Thousands of people turned out for the show, which underscores the city’s commitment and passion to win the bid to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Thirty-three medalists from the London games came to participate and celebrate.

The concert is an annual event hosted by the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) every year since 1997.

Several Japanese medalists were interviewed during the concert.

Akiko Adachi played on the 2012 Paralympic Games women's gold medal goalball team. “I used to play the piano when I was a child and have had a passion for music ever since, so hearing this wonderful music in person today is a truly amazing experience for me,” she said.

Ryota Murata, the men’s boxing middleweight gold medal winner in 2012 said, "Looking back at the Olympic Games with today's music, I was able to see the Games from a different look this time. I realized once again how great the Olympics are, and I get excited just imagining the possibility of Tokyo hosting the 2020 Games."

The evening was a definitive effort by the JOC to demonstrate their ability to mix culture with sports which is the main part of the cultural Olympiad.

By showing the island nation’s passion for sports and ability to come together in good will and harmony, the Japanese Olympic Movement hopes the IOC will give the nod to the Tokyo bid this time. The IOC meets next September to decide who will host the 2020 games.

Tsunekazu Takeda, IOC member and president of the both the bid and the JOC said, "As a magnificent synthesis of sport, art and culture, the Olympic Concert is an opportunity for all of us-athletes, officials and citizens- to reflect on our passion for the Olympic Movement and its power to unite the world as only the Games can.

"Tokyo 2020 and its millions of supporters across Japan rejoiced in this celebration of the universal Olympic Values of excellence, friendship and respect.

"Japan would be deeply honoured to carry on this tradition by lighting the Olympic Torch in Tokyo for the 2020 Games."

Tokyo is running against Istanbul and Madrid to host the summer Games.
