Team Japan brought home a record 38 medals from 13 competitions at the London Games and came home all pledging their support behind the Tokyo campaign. Masato Mizuno, Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) Vice President and bid ceo, said, "I am proud of the Japanese athletes' performances in London. “Japan's Olympic Team is fully behind Tokyo 2020 and we hope their stellar performances in London will promote the Bid and show the Japanese passion for the Olympic Movement to the world. “Sport has the power to unite our nation, and no event more so than the pinnacle of competition: the Olympic and Paralympic Games." Olympians are highly respected in Japan so the complete endorsement of the bid effort after the fruitful medal haul has had a big effect on public opinion as well. A number of the medallists issued statements of support: Gold and silver medallist in gymnastics, Kohei Uchimura, said: "The Olympics only take place once every four years. In London I experienced the wonderful feeling of competing at this level. Let's host the 2020 Games in Tokyo!" Three time gold medallist, Saori Yoshida, said: "Everyone in Japan will be excited if we host the Olympics, and it's a positive thing that the world will pay close attention to us. The JOC says that this is the first time such a parade has ever been attempted. The celebration will be held in part to honor the athletes and their achievements in London, but also to increase the spirit and support of Tokyo’s bid to host the 2020 Games, says JOC President Tsunekazu Takeda. The parade is scheduled to start at 11 am on Monday, and will travel a distance of around 1 kilometer through Ginza with the use of two convertibles and five buses. Among those to be celebrated will be both the three-time gold medal winning women wrestlers Saori Yoshida and Kaori Icho, as well as overall gymnastics champion Kohei Uchimura. Also there will be the entire Nadeshiko Japan team, the celebrated national women’s soccer team that won the silver medal. The convoy of five buses caused gridlock as fans and shoppers in Tokyo's upmarket Ginza district help celebrate Japan's record haul of 38 medals (seven gold, 14 silver and 17 bronze) at the London Olympics. People working in offices above street level leant precariously out of windows to cheer as the athletes navigated through a vast sea of supporters in Japan's first Olympic celebratory parade of its kind. Attended by 71 of the country's 76 medallists in total, the athletes, sporting their red Olympic jackets, waved as fans crammed the pavement in sweltering summer heat and screamed their names and messages of congratulations. One athlete carried placards in support of the northeast region of Japan devastated by last year's deadly tsunami. "Japan's sportsmen and women have done so much to lift spirits since last year's disaster," 33-year-old sales assistant Yurie Miyajima told Reuters. "They were fantastic in London." Japan has an incredibly rich culture of tradition and technology - I highly doubt their ceremonies will be dull. They certainly wont need to bow to American tastes. I agree with Baron that Nagano lacked sizzle, but I'm optimistic that the Japanese have learned that they need to offer a bit more zing. Rio is going to have sizzle to spare anyway. Japan can take a cue from them or pose a contrast with something elegant and sophisticated. Either way, I think they can deliver something good. Japan can take a cue from them or pose a contrast with something elegant and sophisticated. Either way, I think they can deliver something good. Perhaps Japan will be the country to take on Athens ceremonies? It sure won't be Rio. A version of 2004 depicting Japanese history would be mindblowing. (although i'm still backing Istanbul!) (ANA) signed up to become Tokyo 2020’s sixth official bid partner. The airline, one of the largest carriers in the Asia-Pacific region, will work with the Tokyo 2020 Bid Committee and its other bid partners – Asics, Descente, JTB, Mizuno and Kinki Nippon Tourist – to bring the Games to Japan’s shores in eight years’ time. Tsunekazu Takeda, an IOC member and president of the Tokyo 2020 Bid Committee and the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC), said: "I welcome ANA, one of Japan's leading firms in the transportation industry, as the sixth official Tokyo 2020 bid partner.
