baron-pierreIV
Except it is in the middle of the rowing course! I think the Rowing lanes are off to one side. But a floating cauldron can always be anchored out of the way.

Olympian2004
Since we didn't get news about construction activities at its final location near the port yet (with only three months to go), I don't think that it will be a very elaborate cauldron that needs a lot of construction. Remember: When the Vancouver Games were only three months away, cauldron construction works were already underway at Jack Poole Plaza. Sochi's cauldron was also in the making (or even already finished) with three months to go. Maybe they are currently pre-fabricating all necessary parts at some secret location and can easily transport them to the final location and assemble them there within only a couple of days. That includes that there must already be some gas piping pre-installed at the location. However they will do it, Rio sure chooses an innovative solution. I'm just not sure yet whether it's a bad or a good one.
Olympian2004
Addendum: Of course, the cauldron could be entirely mobile - so that they can place it at Maracana for the opening and closing nights and, in between, easily move it to its "permanent" location near the port. But this raises the question how they can easily ensure the necessary gas supply at the port location. They would have to have some sort of "quick-fix" connection to a gas pipeline there. Otherwise, some poor guys will have quite a lousy job exchanging gas cartridges every couple of hours.

I'm just not sure yet whether it's a bad or a good one. The location is so close to large buildings that any gas supply would only have to be run a few metres. I do hope that they are deliberately leaving all development of the site until as late as possible, and bringing in prefabricated components, because at the moment there's quite a long stretch of the waterfront there which is in a real mess, and it would be a great shame if it was still in a mess during the Olympics.

With evil in the world running rampant, I wouldn't leave too many gas lines exposed and unguarded for so long a time.

What about a completely mobile cauldron over a track or over those giants parade floats used in the carnival moving all around the city for 17 days .... That sounds crazy, but Brazilians ARE craaazyy!!! hahaha LOL

That sounds crazy, but Brazilians ARE craaazyy!!! hahaha LOL Actually, that wouldn't be crazy at all. A carnival float cauldron. Would explain why we haven't seen any construction going on for it. Also, there's been rumors of the cauldron going "green" or wood burning since London so that could be a possibility. Park the float in the park and/or drive it around to medal matches. Would be very cool and very unique to Rio, the only other city which could pull off a float cauldron would be New Orleans but they aren't getting an Olympics any time soon. A wood-burning cauldron's NOT going to fly. Too big a carbon imprint. This is MERELY symbolic -- NOT a statement. And a mobile cauldron? Uhmmm... a good insurance company, who's a sponsor, would put their foot down.

TorchbearerSydney
I like the idea of a mobile cauldron... Maracana on Opening night, over to Barra for Swimming/Cycling week, then to the Athletics stadium for the final week, before off to Maracana for the Closing. Could be paraded through the city Carnivale Style. Don't think the logistics are that hard, the London cauldron was moved (a short distance). But for safety reasons, the London cauldron had to be extinguished during the move, and relit from the backup flame by a 1948 torch-bearer. And where does all this "mobile cauldron" stuff leave the claim about a site near the Candelaria church?

For all we know, it could be an effigy of Wilma that will be a cauldron!! LOL!! I think the Rio logo will feature somehow in the cauldron! Nacholympic
Rio's Mayor Eduardo Paes has confirmed that the cauldron will be moved, after the lighting in Maracana, to the Olympic Boulevard in the Port Zone... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAYpznrRjyY

Yesterday, the city government confirmed that the Olympic cauldron will be at Praça Mauá, in the port area of Rio's capital. This will be only the second time in the history of the event in which the symbol will be displayed outside of an Olympic stadium, and the first one took place in a winter race in Sochi (RUS) in 2014.The Olympic Stadium Rio Games, Engenhão even not receive the ceremonies of opening and closing, as is tradition, as they will be held at Maracanã.The revitalization of the port area was one of the main works of legacy to the Olympics, with the creation of the Museum of Tomorrow, the Conde Orla and own Praça Mauá.The whole facility was called Porto Maravilha and during the Games, will be transformed into an "Olympic Boulevard" with the installation stage for concerts and big screens to display competitions. This will be one of the "Live Sites", implemented during the event, with free activities open to the public. The other will be installed in Madureira Park

cubebox
Not really convinced about having the cauldron in a non-sport location, but at least it's a beautiful location (still liking the idea of a cauldron in the middle of the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas hahaha) Any news about the design of the cauldron? Maybe following the design of the Museum of Tomorrow?
