Canada: Is 'Own the Podium' working for our summer athletes?

Recommended Posts

Curious what my fellow Canucks think. Do you think 'Own the Podium' is working for our summer athletes?

Sydney: 14 medals, 3 gold

Athens: 12 medals, 3 gold

Beijing: 18 medals, 3 gold

London: 10 medals, 1 gold.

We are in line with what is normal. But things have just gotten more competative. And despite the increase, we are still behind other countries. The UK spent about 450 million over the last 7 years. Canada has spent 140 million.

Canada finished 5th in women's gymnastics, has 3 athletes a win away from a boxing medal. Things are definately looking up, the COC just needs to continue to focus on strong athletes that have a future. Our female canoist, wrestlers and boxers, Paula Findlay, Jennifer Abel, Ryan Cochrane, Sinead Russell, etc.

We will never reach the heights of Australia or Korea. But 20 to 25 medals a games is obtainable.

Canada actually has a way larger population then Austrailia yet they send almost double the athletes... is this just a case of a legacy of the 2000 games.. or is this a model Canada should try adopting.

Lot of that has to do with being in Oceania/Asia and being the top dog in many sports.

And team size means nothing, this is not a case of throwing as you can at the wall and hoping it sticks. Canada sent almost 80 more athletes to Beijing, Canada should at least match Beijing's total.

Less team sports that is why. Baseball water polo softball and field hockey missed out = 70 athletes.

So Canucks, what do you think? Is a review and change of Own the Podium needed?

No not necessarily. So many of out medal potentials missed out here. We just need to get them better prepared and move funding from table tennis, badminton sports where Canada will never win a medal to medal potential sports.

Here is an artice:

What's troubling is rowing is facing a shortage of talented rowers.

Not really. There's too much competition in summer sports. Throwing a few millions at a select few won't do much because a dozen other coutries will do the same and more.

It's the base of the pyramid that needs fixing, not the top. If you have a healthy sport system, the champions will come. Tennis is one of the few success story in recent years with the national training center, multiple junior and pro tournaments being organised and the hiring of great coaches. Tennis Canada has pumped top juniors consistently

in the last few years, with many transitioning well to the pro circuit. Of course, TC can fund itself with the Rogers Cup.

A lot more money and a complete overhaul of the sports system are needed, and it won't happen.

One gold. Ouch. I think that answers the question in this thread.

The three gold medal hopefuls that COC did not win that here. (Dylan - Shot, Catherine - Mountain and Adam in Kayak).

The thing is London did not have the full lead in as Vancouver did. Rio will have that. 20 golds in Sochi will hopefully make up for it.
