Australia and Canada arnt the only nations feeling let down...Just have a look at the European nations showing on the table...Its mainly the emerging east that has success. My homeland New Zealand had a great couple of days in sports that get huge funding...But its all gone quiet and or only real chance for one last gold is in the womans shotput. Olympian2004 Posted August 5, 2012 Report Share Posted August 5, 2012 I find it remarkable that France has already won more gold medals at this point (8) than in the whole course of the Beijing Games (7). One might get the impression that these Games were actually given to Paris and the French have the home advantage. I'm getting a bit anxious about Germany's prospects now. OK, there are still many gold chances in canoeing and maybe Robert Harting and some athlete in a different sport might win a more or less surprising gold medal. There is Sarah Walk in the BMX... Don't count her out. Also Lisa Carrington is the defending K1 200M world champ (But can't see her getting up). Anyway, first time since I've been old enough to follow the Summer Olympics (Sydney 2000) than Canada has actually performed well in the first week. Mostly the US has been the ones pipping us. And Britain in the rowing etc. We've been just unlucky in some, and our silver haul is impressive - if only one or two of those had been gold we wouldn't be so gloomy (people forget that in the past few games, the pool's only got us three or four golds really). But the competition has been fierce, and team Britain has been developing and investing in exactly the sports that used to snare us many of ours. We've still got some good chances - athletics with Sally Pearson and co, ironically, could potentially net us more gold than the pool this year. Then we still have some fancies in cycling and the sailing. Still, I expect we may come in at less than the 10 gold benchmark I personally always hope fr, and miss the top 10 on the table. There's gonna be debate in AOC and government circles about funding now, I expect. Already been complaints that there isn't enough funding, they have already been basically told to shutup and that it's not true. Plus it won't happen in QLD our money is being cut everywhere. Yep, after the embarrassment of 1 gold medal in Atlanta the UK didn't just copy you, it nicked coaching staff where it could from the two countries it was most envious of - Germany and Australia. The system of talent spotting in schools and moving children rapidly into elite programmes, rather than relying on the old county sports systems, was completely lifted from Australian methods. The UK abandoned the old 'sport for all' mantra that I grew up with. My 6 year old nephew has just been put on a gifted and talented register for sport, and that's through a sports science team coming and doing tests at his village primary school in the middle of nowhere. It's odd from what I've read that Australia is pushing the money into mass participation rather than elite performance just as Britain moves in the opposite direction. The axe on Zaichkov and Kachan came down two days after Lukashenko, who also serves as president of the Belarus Olympic committee, blamed them for the country's "complete failure" in London. "Belarus people will no longer tolerate such a disastrous showing. I think those who are responsible for our performance in London should resign," Lukashenko told delegates at the annual BOC convention. "The performance of our Olympic team in Britain this summer was a complete failure," he said, referring to a total of 12 medals, two of them gold. "Only 12 medals out of the 25 that you had promised us - it is a noticeable step back compared to what we had achieved (at the 2008 Olympics) in Beijing." Belarus ended up 26th in the overall Olympic medal standings in London after shot putter Nadezhda Ostapchuk was stripped of her gold after testing positive for a banned anabolic steroid. Ostapchuk, 31, was handed a one-year ban by the Belarus anti-doping agency last month. In Beijing, the former Soviet state had their largest-ever medal haul - winning 19, four of them gold. I would've expected these Athletes to have picked up Medals, if not Gold, then a Bronze or Silver: - Oludamola Osayomi: 2010 Commonwealth Games 100m Gold Medallist, later stripped for some stimulant. 2011 Africa Games 100m Gold Medallists and was part of the Bronze Medal winning Nigerian Team in the Women's 4x100 Relay in Beijing. She failed to qualify for the 100m Final. If she qualified, she would have at least taken 4th Place. From looking at the competitiors, it would be really hard for her to get into the Medals against Jeter, Campbell-Brown & Fraser-Pryce. - Blessing Okagbare: 2008 Long Jump Bronze Medallists, 2014 Commonwealth Games 100m and 200m Gold Medallist, Fastest Woman in Africa. I watched her run in the 100m Heats and she was amazing, she caught upto Tianna Madison (Now Bartoletta) really quickly and won her heat. Her performance in the finals was really poor, she wounded up 8th Place. Could've battled Jeter for the Bronze. - Regina George: Nigeria's 400m Specialist. She was a favourite to win a Medal in the 400m. She won her 400m Quarter Finals but after a poor Semis, she did not proceed to the Finals. Falilat Ogunkoya, who won Bronze in the 400m in 1996, Predicted George would be the one who will break her 400m African Record which is 49.10. I do hope Nigeria medal in Rio, Okagbare and George seem very strong. I have not seen much of Osayomi in 2013-Now. I would also look out for the 4x400m Relay Team that'll be lead by George and the 4x100m Relay Team that'll be lead by Okagbare and Asumnu.
