Athletics (Track and Field) at the 2012 Summer Olympics

This should be a bit of good news for USA Track and Field:

When asked on NBC about Rio, 200 Meter Gold medalist Allyson Felix said that Rio was a "definite possibility." 400 Meter Hurdles Silver Medalist Lashinda Demus said that she would get gold in Rio.

China's Liu to have surgery, agency says

Former champion Liu Xiang will have surgery on his Achilles tendon in Britain after crashing out of his 110 hurdles heat at the London Olympics on Tuesday, Chinese officials said.

"The doctor has been chosen. He is the expert in sports medicine and has done operations on many famous players like David Beckham," Du Zhaocai, vice chairman of the Chinese Athletics Association (CAA), told state news agency Xinhua on Wednesday.

...

"An MRI scan proved it really was a rupture of the tendon. The Chinese delegation immediately contacted local medical organisations in order to find the best hospital and surgery doctor for Liu Xiang."

Double-amputee runner Oscar Pistorius will get a shot at an Olympic medal after all, even after his South African team failed to finish the heats of the 4x400 relay.

A jury of appeal said South Africa "had been severely damaged" in a collision between Ofentse Mogawane and a Kenyan runner who cut across him too soon in the second section of Thursday's morning heat. The jury of appeal decided to give the extra ninth lane to South Africa — silver medalists at the last world championships — for Friday's final.

Lolo Jones yesterday went on NBC Today tearfully speaking about the harpooning from the media in the leadup to her disappointing finish in the 110m hurdles, notbaly that Jere Longman's New York Times article slamming her on the eve of her final. Basically what he says is that he feels Lolo thinks she's "all that" and even called her "the Anna Kournikova of track and field"--all beauty and hype with little substance as a public figure. But Lolo must realize that it is not the job of American reporters and media institutions to blindly support Team USA. A good deal of the attention she got from this she brought on herself and should prepare for backlashes. I don't think she's poor athlete, but she's not technically gifted like Sally Pearson is. That said, Lolo is very attractive and ever since photography hit the scene almost two centuries ago there's this serious gravitation towards the photogenetic. Media institutions tends to hype attractive people, that's the reality. Even Dawn Harper and Kellie blasted her afterwards, and harsh as they maybe be in the words, their achievements in getting medals should be noticed. Like to know how Sally Pearson would regard all this as an Australian. Was the article harsh? Yeah, more so because of the timing. Makes you wonder how different things would be had she not crashed at the final hurdle in Beijing while leading. That carries a legacy of its own and it grows...

American runner Manteo Mitchell has revealed he ran the last 200m of the Olympic men's 4x400m relay heats with a broken left leg.

Mitchell ran the lead-off leg for the United States quartet, who went through to Friday's final as the second fastest team despite Mitchell's injury.

"As soon as I took the first step past the 200m mark, I felt it break." Manteo told the USA Track and Field website.

"I didn't want to let the three guys or the team down, so I just ran on it."

Mitchell still managed to finish the opening lap in 46.1 seconds as the US team went on to set a qualifying time of two minutes, 58.87 seconds.

"It hurt so bad," the 25-year-old added. "I'm pretty amazed that I still split [close to] 45 seconds on a broken leg."

I just saw that on TV. Amazing!! SHould go right up there with Keri Strugg's 1996 vault on a sprained ankle; and the Japanese gymnast's "torn" muscles I think it was in the rings?

An Olympic medal for Botswana! Nice!

BTW, What happened to Philipps Idowu? He was expected to a serious gold medal contender.

He'd been injured and whilst he tried to recover and entered the qualifying round, he missed so much training and was still lacking in fitness, that he failed to make the final

Hate to be cynical, but to smash a world record that was seen in athletics circles as one of the dirtiest of dirtiest world records by 0.55 seconds seems a 'too good to be true'

Even a doped up Marion Jones led team couldn't beat it

Guess we'll find out in 8 years time

'Blade runner' leaves Olympics as a finalist

fddf5c0e72ade516170f6a7067000540.jpg

Oscar Pistorius set precedent with his journey to and through the London Games. When he leaves, he can add one more accomplishment: He was a finalist.

A double-amputee now known globally as the ‘‘Blade Runner’’ because he runs on carbon-fiber blades, Pistorius anchored the South Africa team in the 4x400-meter relay final at the London Olympics on Friday night, bringing the 80,000-strong crowd to its full voice.

It didn’t matter that he finished eighth. He can proudly add ‘‘Olympic finalist’’ to his long list of unprecedented achievements.

‘‘This whole experience was amazing ... to step out here in an Olympic final is more than I could have ever hoped for,’’ Pistorius said. ‘‘That opportunity to come here once again and finish today and not yesterday is a dream come true.’
