Liu crashes out at second straight Games

Hurdling superstar Liu Xiang, the most celebrated track and field athlete from the world's most populous country, crashed out of a second straight Olympics without clearing a single barrier.

Liu, who became China's first male track and field Olympic champion when he won gold in the 110m hurdles in Athens in 2004, was understood to have ruptured his Achilles tendon at the start of his heat on Tuesday morning.

He came into the London Games under an injury cloud and his right leg was heavily strapped before the race.

Liu crashed heavily into the first hurdle with his leading left leg, before getting up and hopping down the straight.

He was embraced by fellow competitors and then taken from the stadium on a wheelchair.

Stories like Liu's remind us that sports stories don't always play out according to script. Make Jess Ennis all that more special. She made it look easy, but so many things could have gone wrong, or some kid could have emerged our of nowhere.

That's what's so great about the Olympics, for better or worse.. you can be the best in the world at something, but the Olympics is a largely a 1 shot deal and if you're not the best at that exact moment, you don't win a medal.

I feel bad for Liu. He had the weight of an entire nation (and the largest nation on the planet at that) on his shoulders and now he comes back 4 years later and history repeats.

Grenada declares half-holiday to celebrate James Olympic gold

Grenada's prime minister declared a half-holiday on Tuesday and gave the entire island the afternoon off to celebrate runner Kirani James' Olympic gold medal in the men's 400 meter race.

It was the first Olympic medal ever won by an athlete from the tiny southeast Caribbean island of Grenada, which has just under 110,000 residents

Beyond all hope Canada managed to salvaged something from track and field.

Results from the men's high jump:

Gold: Ivan Ukhov of Russia

Silver: Erik Kynard of the United States

Bronze: Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar, Derek Drouin of Canada and Robert Grabarz of Great Britain.

After Dylan Armstrong failed to medal and both Felicien and Lopes-Schliep failed to even qualify even a bronze is a minor miracle and a major relief.

.... that is just marvellous I will watch two victory ceremonies with a German and an Aussie Gold Medal Winner in the Olympic Stadium tomorrow!!!

I recognised that nearly all victory ceremonies in athletics are the next day (except the one for Jessica Ennis, which I found quite surprisingly)

Of course I will take my Aussie and my German flag with me

Harting had another memorable celebration.

It was not like high jump wasn't on our depth chart for a medal, but it was 4th on the list. And it was Mason that was more likely and touted by AC. Oh well, a medal is a medal and hopefully it is the mark of a promising future for him, Mason and Phylicia George.

A great performance by Robert Harting - he really has strong nerves and often manages to surpass his competitors after they have surpassed him. And what an important gold medal for Germany that was: It's the first Olympic gold medal in athletics for us since Sydney 2000 (where Nils Schumann won the men's 800 metres and Heike Drechsler won the women's long jump). Thankfully, athletics are experiencing a small revival here in Germany with some very promising athletes.

Drama in the Olympic Stadium as Borges sees his pole break in two pieces

The Olympic Games didn't work out as planned for Cuba's Lazaro Borges on Wednesday morning.

Qualifying for the men's pole vault was fairly non-dramatic until Borges stepped up to the plate.

Thankfully, the athlete didn't appear to be hurt, as the incident was replayed time and time again for television audiences.
