Family Kept Grandparent's Death Secret from Chinese Olympic Diver

Chinese diver Wu Minxia won the gold medal for the women’s synchronized three-m springboard event Sunday afternoon, but her parents gave her some grave news shortly after her victory: both of her grandparents had been dead for more than one year.

On top of that, her mother has been fighting breast cancer for years, but she is now in remission.

Keeping these secrets from Minxia was a joint decision by both her parents.

Minxia’s family reasons that they didn’t want to interfere with her diving career.

“It was essential to tell this white lie,” said her father Wu Yuming.

Minxia was away was at training camp run by the Chinese government for most of the time during the years leading up to the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, which allowed her family to maintain such a huge secret.

The Olympian began training at 6 years old, and she went to the camp at 16 years old. The Chinese have an incredibly strict, almost militaristic training program for their competitive athletes, which is why they are sent to facilities instead of living with their families while they train for events such as the Olympics.

“We accepted a long time ago that she doesn’t belong entirely to us,” Yuming said. “I don’t even dare to think about things like enjoying family happiness.”

This event will most likely lead to the Chinese government being scrutinized for their competitive training practices.
