mr.x
CTV began covering the Olympics for Canada beginning with the Vancouver 2010 Games. The amazing coverage theme music and graphics were produced for the Vancouver Games and now re-formatted for London. The amazing Opening Ceremony pre-show would move any Brit to shed a tear, lots of montages on Great Britain's moment....plus, retrospectives on Canadian athletes in London and a look back at Vancouver 2010: http://www.watchseriesus.com/2012/07/2012-london-olympics-ctv-preview-show.html CTV's coverage of the Opening Ceremony: http://www.watchseriesus.com/2012/07/london-2012-olympics-opening-ceremony.html

4seasonscentre
http://www.ctvolympics.ca/videos/channel/obs1/watch/opening-ceremony.html I found the full OBS broadcast of the opening ceremony. You see the part before the start where the audience gets covered in blue fabric- didn't see the point of it.
Brekkie Boy
It seemed a bit odd - I put it down to them trying to make the green infield the "Isle" and the crowd the sea.
Faster
I like parts of the coverage. But Brian Williams needs to retire. I love a few of the TSN personalities, but some of their athlete commentators make me cringe, especially Shewfelt. I just really miss CBC's diving, swimming and track commentators. Durban Sandshark
Will this might make prospective Canadian TV rights holders reconsider about not forking over to bid on the rights for 2014/2016? Certainly was bigger than when the CBC had them. http://canadiansport...ecord-audience/ One of the things I liked about the CTV Olympics coverage was you have an Olympic Games preview show to get Canadians interested in the Olympic at the start. I kinda wished the coverage of the Opening Ceremony used as many langauges like it did with Vancouver, but we could chalk it up as more of an interest of the "home Olympics", which partially explains why APTN isn't involved this time with their arsenal of regional languages. All I noticed on the schedule outside of English and French was Cantonese Chinese from OMNI. There were 12 from Vancouver. Did CTV/RDS/TSN/OLN/V/Rogers Sportsnet have scenes from the pre-Opening Ceremony show as part of its telecast before the OC? Yes, you know by now up there that a song plenty of you Canadians (if not all of you) hate so much "I Believe" is back. In the forms of the (Canadian) Tenors' and Nikki Yanofsky's and Villeneuve's. With some reworkings. Instrumental versions are nice and I think better. http://canadiansport...-back/#comments I also read on CanadianSports blog that posters are wishing CTV could do a better job of compiling montages to better choice in music (ala the CBC). Faster
Kyle Shewfelt's commentary for gymnastics is grating. He is annoying, and his word/sentence choices and overall commentary is just terrible. I feel sorry for Rod Black.
Durban Sandshark
CTV Olympics' intro for its London 2012 Olympics Coverage. Also of course used by the likes of TSN, Rogers Sportsnet, OLN, RDS, V, RD2, RDS INFO, OMNI, and ATN. Liked how the people are made to carry various flags around the world instead not just prominently the Union Jack, the SDtars and Stripes, and the Maple Leaf all over London, reminding that it's far more global than with Vancouver. Yes, the profiled glass-like red maple leafs are back too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0tHG_9_lMc I think Canadians even more so have an interest in this OC than the US with the TV ratings being so high because of the fact Canada's a Commonwealth nation and holds more direct ties to the UK, though not as strong as it once was. I noticed on the French portion of the Olympic coverage that handball is not much of a part of it on TV, at least in the early going. Quebec, the most socially democratic and European-oriented of all the provinces, is where handball is traditionally the most popular out of all of Canada, and where a lot of players for Canada tends to hail from in its history. So with France being the men's international juggernaut they are embarking on more history, it might stand to reason to see them in action to cater to that French-Canadian Olympic fan base. Maybe like with the English portion, they're saving the handball action for the quarterfinals and beyond on TV. Because I know, it's nowhere near where we here in the US got in our TV schedule from the NBC family of networks. You can best be sure had either one of our handball teams qualified, if not both, they'd be on the NBC Sports Network too maximizing the exposure
mr.x
CTV's coverage of London 2012 (and Vancouver 2010) have been superb. Sure, there are minor details that aren't perfect but on the scheme of things they have been great. I would not want CBC to cover the Olympics again, simply because I don't believe they have the resources to deliver great coverage. The public broadcaster has been facing steep cups, if they do get the tv rights for future Games I highly doubt it'll be of the same quality we've seen for their coverage of Beijing and prior. I mean, even for Beijing and Torino you could see the network was in a bit of trouble....they couldn't even afford to broadcast the Torino Olympics from Torino! They broadcasted it from Toronto. Not to mention the horrid graphics from Beijing. Furthermore, most of the CBC Sports staff have relocated to CTV/TSN.
Brekkie Boy
Those titles look brilliant - but the theme is nowhere near as good as the old CBC one. Hopefully the rights for Canada are resolved in good time before Sochi - is your show on CTV's coverage in comparison to CBC common in Canda Mr X? I think CTV's new "I Believe" theme for Canada's broadcast of the Olympics holds more resonance with Canadians than the old CBC Olympic theme as there's a link to the Vancouver 2010 Games, which Canadians are quite fond of. Either way, CBC is no longer the network it once used to be nor one that I respected.

Durban Sandshark
I'm just glad we don't have NBC in Canada! CTV is doing a great job, unlike NBC. Actually you do get them from the nearest NBC network affilates (and other US networks like ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, and PBS) to your Canadian cities (Buffalo in the case of Toronto). It's just that you're likely get whatever coverage coming from MSNBC and CNBC blocked. NBC Sports Network does not exist up there, so you don't have to worry about them as much, unless you are a fan of Team USA and want to see them in action televised. Though according to Channel Canada back in 2010, Rogers and Bell cable services did not block MSNBC and CNBC's Vancouver coverage. Figured CTV would do a great job so far. But now that CBC just regained the rights for 2014/2016, would many of these same personalities return for that? I do expect TSN and RDS will return for they have a familiarity with the CBC in past Olympics. But what about the Rogers-owned multilingual networks? That's definitely one of the more appealing aspects for me about the Bell/Rogers-headlined coverage right now--emphasizing the Canadian multiculturalism and diverse sporting interests in the Olympics outside of English and French. Brekkie Boy
Interesting the deal is only for one cycle - most deals signed recently have been through to 2020. It does suggest that the IOC believe they can squeeze a bit more money out of Canada next time around.
Durban Sandshark
Things get even more interesting for Canadian Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium's Olympic coverage and more positive: Canadian viewership is up 74% than what it was in Beijing for the CBC's coverage with an average of 2.1 Canadians a day watching. Hopefully the CBC will learn from this and improve on the coverage starting in 2014. CTV's Olympic Primetime is 48% more than with CBC's Olympic Prime 2008. http://bellmediapr.ca/olympics/releases/release.asp?id=15401&yyyy=2012 Worth pointing out there's a new ratings system In Canada that makes things more favorable for sports. The only advantage of CTV is they have 3-4 channels showing 4 different sports at the same time so you cna flip, CBC can only show one thing at a time so that will be a disadvantage.
