Volleyball (Indoor) at the 2012 Summer Olympics

Recommended Posts

Y don't u focus on the positives of what your athletes have done? NOT everyone can win. Only one can win. Your guys (& ALL these athletes) tried their best. I think all the Brazilians NEED a refresher course in what the Olympics are ALL about -- the important thing is TO HAVE TRIED one's best ...not to have triumphed is 2ndary -- if you are going to be good hosts for 2014 and 2016.

Be proud of how you finished -- regardless of the outcome.

I think that's something the 2016 hosts will have to learn.

When people say "Brazilians are mad for sports"...

MAD means really mad...

It's nice to see our athletes there, we are proud of them, but we are latins and passionate for sports...

Yes, bombastic combination...

We want, at least, commitment and focus, just this.

I'm obviously disappointed with Brazil in this games but very proud of their effort and our 3 golds. And Baron is right: brazilian crowds are ungrateful and have a lack of memory. This volleyball team won 30 of the 40 tournaments they took part in the last decade and it's frustrating they lost like this but they're Olympic Medalists for the third time in a row! So, congratulations and better luck next time. And God defend Team Brazil from the Rio 2007 booers in 4 years...

They win 30 of 40 tournaments, which is outstanding!

This is not in discussion, and the problem is not the Volleyball team.

The problem is in the average.

You change the name of the tournament to "Olympic Games" and suddenly all of our champions, #1 in rankings, favourites become athletes from some tiny country with amateurs status, with nerves in shock and making childish mistakes...

Brazilian crowd is tired of "disasters"...

That's the awful truth.

Despite of this, we predicted 5-8 golds in London, because we had a reasonable number of World Champions, #1 in rankings as never.

Final Medal count: 3 golds (3 from underdogs) and NO FAVOURITE WON GOLD!

There is something really wrong with Brazil. Really wrong!

Welcome to "how it feels to be a Canadian watching the Olympics".

One thing you can always count on: favourites usually don't win at the Olympics.

with all respect to Canada, the only good thing is we had more golds than Canada and this was considered "impossible" 20 years ago...

Anyway, Brazil had 2 or 3 Gold Medal points (to win 3-0 over Russia) and guess what?

Russia is the champion.

This is a disaster, fiasco for Brazilians. And this won't change anytime soon.

People is mad with our Mens Volleyball team.

Russia coach Ovchinnikov dies aged 43

Sergei Ovchinnikov, who coached the Russian women's volleyball team at the London Olympics, has died, his club team Dynamo Moscow said on Wednesday. He was 43.

"Sergei Ovchinnikov suddenly passed away at the team's (pre-season) training camp in Croatia," Dynamo said on their website (www.vldinamo.ru), without giving details of the cause of death.

Ovchinnikov was appointed national team coach last December and successfully guided Russia through qualification for the 2012 Olympics.

In London, the powerful Russian team, who won back-to-back world titles in 2006 and 2010, were considered leading medal contenders but lost in the quarter-finals to eventual winners Brazil after squandering six match points.

It’s reported that he apparently committing suicide. sad news

The All-Russian Volleyball Federation says the women’s national team coach, Sergey Ovchinnikov has died. It’s reported he apparently committing suicide.

43-year-old Ovchinnikov was at the training camp in Croatia with his team Dynamo Moscow.

The former Russian coach Vladimir Kuzyutkin says the suicide could have been due to the poor showing of the women’s team at the London Olympics.

"This is so stupid,” he told RSN. “He was my friend, my colleague. No one said a bad word about him. Yes, there was a blunder at the Olympics, well, to hell with it. I don’t know why he couldn’t cope with it.”

The head coach of the men's volleyball team, Vladimir Alekno, confirmed that the London failure was a huge blow for Ovchinnikov.

“He took the Olympics very personally,” he said. “I saw what he was going through and how upset he was after the defeat. He didn’t talk much. Even after victories he was always thinking about something and smoked a lot."

Russian women’s volleyball squad entered the London Games as one of the favorites, but missed out on medals, losing to Brazil in the quarterfinals.

It may have been suicide after all... Athletes and coaches in some countries face unfair emotional pressure and harassment. People may go borderline and do things like that. That's too bad, though. His team is a great team...

FIVB to hold democratic vote for presidency

Leaders from volleyball federations worldwide will vote for the first time on Friday to elect a president for the sport's international governing body.

The FIVB World Congress, convened in Anaheim, Calif., this week, will select a successor for Jizhong Wei of China, who was appointed to the post in Beijing four years ago. He insisted he would step aside after a single presidential term, making way for the first democratic election in the organization's history.

Among the candidates for the FIVB's top position is USA Volleyball CEO Doug Beal. No American currently leads an international governing body for a summer Olympic sport.

The other candidates include Ary Graca, president of both the South American volleyball confederation and the Brazilian volleyball federation, and Chris Schacht, president of the Australian volleyball federation.
