gotosy
Women's boxing finally steps into Olympic ring By GREG BEACHAM, AP LONDON (AP) — U.S. lightweight Queen Underwood lost a close fight to Britain's Natasha Jonas on Sunday, the first day of women's boxing at an Olympics. A landmark tournament for gender equality in sports began with 12 entertaining bouts featuring uppercuts, haymakers and footwork that all measure up nicely to the men's amateur sport. Boxing was the only summer Olympic sport without a women's version. Indian flyweight Mary Kom wept after making her Olympic debut 12 years after she defied her father's wishes to pursue boxing. The five-time world champion won on her twins' fifth birthday, no less. Russia's Elena Savelyeva won the first bout with a busy jab and strong combinations, saying it was a pleasure to make Olympic history. AP

I watched the matches in Belgium, France and in what i suspect is either an Australian/US/British channel on videos sites like youtube and everybody is atonished every match The IOC need to changes thoses rules for Rio! The Canadian commentators, for virtually every fight, spend more time talking about how terrible the officiating is than anything else. While it's very entertaining to watch, it's also downright depressing to see decisions that are questionable at best :/
dancingbrogues
The decision on the French fighter was an absolute disgrace. Olympic boxing is always like this sadly, national federations send people for political reasons rather than true professionals. The British commentators have stopped trying to call the bouts, as no-one really knows what the judges will do. Team GB has had 5 boxers go through to the medal matches, but I would have only seen 3 through. More evenly matched but the Canadian tonight was unlucky, the Brit stopping fighting completely in the last 15 seconds and should have been penalised. Durban Sandshark
Well, Katie did it moments ago! The ExCel Centre was full of Irish fans singing, roaring, and chanting for the amazing and beloved Katie in her defeat of Sofya Ochigava. Just saw the the medal ceremony from RTE's feed, and it was one of the most electric in the Olympics I have ever seen in recent memory long after them singing Amhrán na bhFiann. I gotta say that has got to be among the highest rated TV events on RTE 2 ever, not just this year. Undoubtably this will go down as one of the greatest Irish sports moments events in the conversation as the highest. Everyone in Ireland is just thrilled right now. Even Oscar de la Hoya just tweeted in salute to Katie ("You are amazing.") Katie Taylor's bouts have special problems to RTE's Olympic webstreaming with the servers due to the form of an outage. So much so a special webpage for the Olympics was put up now displayed on a cloud while the streaming issues are addressed. In her hometown of Bray, a power outage reared its ugly head during the fight but later restored.
