Next Stop: Rio (The handover performance)

Recommended Posts

That doesn't make sense. If they are perfect, then they can't be bettered. If they are not the best, then they are not perfect!

Make up your mind! ;)

But I'm sure Rio's games will be perfect! :)

When I mean perfect, I mean, no incidents, no troubles, everything well organized and beautifully done.

British must be pride of what they've done.

But not my fav... I liked more Athens, Sydney and Beijing, but it's just a matter of taste. London have been great, and is my top-5

And instead of unbelievable, I was trying to say unforgettable (big words in English makes me messy)

Yes, British people are often kind...

But I understand the proud of them, let them claim how London is great over Rio and maybe Istanbul (!!!)... B)

Ok so I've read some stuff about the performance.

Looks like this sweeper guy will play a role.

From what I can gather, it appears as if he was a typical street sweeper who started dancing...got films...because a YouTube sensation, that old story.

Made me think of this:

(And its quite entertaining if you haven't seen it before. More than just a Jackson impersonator.

Average handover cerimony, usually the next OC tries to depart from the games that it follows, that wasn't the case, it felt like a continuation from the opening and closing cerimony. In 08 the british set an entirelly different tone from the chinese.

The brazillian don't like their portuguese heritage, but they had to bring the calçada portuguesa to the handover cerimony, ironic.

I liked the Rio part... It was not awesome and the costumes was as crazy as the British "part" of the ceremony.

Anyway, good start to Rio, and special to listen to Brazilian anthem in a Olympic Ceremony!!! I almost cried!

No, we don't like all the sh*t you guys have done here: slavery, killing indians, set us huge taxes for 350 years, destroying the Atlantic forest...

And yes, the only thing we like from our "portuguese heritage" is the Portuguese pavement, that, THANK GOD, have been replaced for more modern ones...

I have to say I was really surprised and disappointed by the Rio handover, I was really looking forward to it- expecting a huge carnival but it looked a bit messy and actually a little bit dull :( However I have every faith that Brazil are going to do an amazing job when the time comes :)

Plus it's worth noting that a majority of Britain felt the same about our handover ceremony in Beijing- so perhaps it's a good omen!

Yes, it could have been better, but at least, it seems people in Stadium had fun with the songs... That's nice.

Where was Carmen Miranda when you needed her??

In a cuffin somewhere in Portugal... Golan Trevize must know.

She is the most famous Portuguese celebrity in the world

Amália was the biggest fado singer in the 20th century, she packed concert halls across the world, Mariza is her successor, recently she was on Letterman, Moonspell are a well known heavy metal band with a big legion of fans mainly in europe, they played at rock in rio several times, daniela ruah is an actress from the hit american tv series NCIS Los Angeles, 2nd most viewed series in the US.

Probably not. I can only talk for my POV's and while it's true that the Portuguese were cruel settlers, the language and literature heritage we share is one of the things I'm most proud of and what bound us together (Minha Pátria é Minha Língua, remember?). It's a blessing being the first Olympic host in our language.

The thing is that troll is a prejudiced person and only posts to offend Rio, Brazil and Brazilians. He deserves some sh*t in return and I'm really sorry if you and the nice people from Portugal (which is the majority) feel offended by it.

Back to the handover. It was interesting, used clichés in a unusual way but it was kinda weird... Albertville and Torino would be proud of us.

It's been a long time since I've come here, but I wanted to check the reactions.

I decided to reply only in order to ask deep apologies on behalf of many Brazilians to the Portuguese commentators: a good number of us, those who speak Portuguese, have Portuguese names, and Portuguese blood (and that is a great majority of the Brazilian population) are proud of our Portuguese roots. All things that are good in Brazil have deep Portuguese or Portuguese-related heritage imbued within it, and any Brazilian who visits Portugal is instantly reminded of the fact that we are indeed a single nation, separated by a huge ocean.

As for the presentation itself: terribly lame, I am embarrassed for it, and I hope the actual ceremonies in 2016 will actually reflect the beautiful side of Brazil. Cliches are fine - but, if we are to use it, let's stick to beautiful and well-known cliches, not to ugly mumble jumble.

By the way, among the arguments used at the time of bidding were the fact that it would be the first Olympics hosted at a Portuguese-speaking nation and the first in South America. Naturally, the lame, lame, lame (yes, thrice lame) presentation missed hitting both counts. Even a single tango duo would have better represented our common continent than this ridiculous performance, the lowest low point of the evening.

Best regards to all!

Seu Jorge eas't bad, Pelé was really bad, if the peole in charge wanted to fillow this path they should had brought more singers like gabriel o pensador and a more coordinated dance number. Sometimes it feels these brazillian events are hostage to Pelé, he had too much power and influence in brazil.

Portuguese don't mind thr brazillian presence, sometimes it's nice to go to a rodízio, portuguse do mind ehen some brazillians cime here and start making trouble and commiting crimes.

Well I unfortunately share the opinion of most when I say I was disappointed by that performance.

I was cringing when the guy in the white suit sung while dancing with the hot women.

Reminded me of those South American soap operas where Pedro is revealed to be Gabriela's long lost brother, but then Pedro sleeps with her anyway - only for his wife to find out and attempt to kill him but before she fires the gun, Pedro reveals he is actually her son so she doesn't kill him but runs away with the dodgy drug dealer from next door.

Also reminds me of 80s porn...
