Next Stop: Rio (The handover performance)

Recommended Posts

Rio 2016 organizers will try to pack as much of the joy and color of their sprawling country as they can into the eight minutes they are alotted in the London 2012 closing ceremony on Sunday.

The traditional flag-handover during the ceremony, in which the Olympic banner will be passed from London to the next Games host city, will be a brief chance to introduce Rio and Brazil to the world.

Daniela Thomas, one of the artistic directors of the programme, said Rio hoped to show the transformative spirit of their country, where diverse influences have blended to produce a vibrant and complex culture.

"We reinvent. This is our spirit," said Thomas, adding that rather than shy away from cliched images of Rio the creative team would try to show the deeper truths behind them.

In all this they'll be aided by some of Brazil's biggest stars, including singer Marisa Monte -- our "diva" Thomas said -- Brazilian rapper Bnegao, and actor, singer composer Seu Jorge.

Also featured will be Renato Sorriso, the sambadrome street sweeper whose impromptu dances in his bright orange work jumpsuit have made him a pop culture sensation.

The flag will actually be handed over to two Brazilian Olympic gold medallists -- Maurren Maggi, who won the women's long jump gold for Brazil in 2008, and two-time Olympic gold medal-winning sailor Robert Scheidt.

Plenty of dancers -- some from Brazil and some culled from samba schools in Britain -- will play a role, and Thomas said she believed Rio's effort would stand up well in a ceremony expected to feature some of the greats of British pop music.

"It's never easy to do the flag handover," said executive producer Marco Balich, noting it often came across as dull but promising Sunday's would be "full of passion, even if it's small ... full of light."

On another note, I went to Casa Brasil in Somerset House today. Would def recommend everyone to go have a look. It's a great exhibition very well curated even by London's standard, and there's some really great artworks there. Love the concept written on the wall saying how Rio is all about curves, and you can see it clearly demonstrated in the logo, font and the graphics. I can really see how Rio 2016 is going to be, with those vibrant colour and beach and all. The colours in every room are great and the staff are all very friendly. I even bought a pin already in the store :) Really looking fwd to Rio now, it will be such a different game!

Wow! Soft-core porn on primetime TV! ;) And with that bossa nova music... mmmm! I really love that the Games are coming to Brazil - you are such sensual people!

Well, everybody is dressed... It's very sensual and beautiful, but I wouldn't call it porn! :)

Brazilian people, in an average is very beautiful or at least charming.

But, you can notice, the best "thing" about us is the smile... Every single foreigner I met in Brazil talk about our smile...

;)

You saw that Golden Grass "jewelry" in the shop? I could bet that the medal design will have something to do with it.

Hmm didnt see that. But I am very impressed with Brazilian design and arts talent I saw in the exhibition and shop. The Games is in safe hands looking forward to see the Olympic elements being revealed.

And you should show your guests those smiles during the Games, too. That's the only point I'm afraid of regarding the Rio Games: That the spectators will constantly boo for other nations, especially the US and Argentina...

The relation of Brazilians with US depends much on how many wars US is fighting.

And more, people in Brazil really love Obama, since he became the president, the view of Brazilians towards USA changed a lot positively.

I don't expect booing to Americans... But Argentines... Booooooooooooooooooooo!!!

hehehehe, it's funny for us.

Someday you guys will understand that booing in Brazil may have a different meaning...

Yes, but Olympic Games also have a different meaning than a football match - where I don't have a big problem with booing. That's part of the ritual there. But not at the more dignified Olympic Games.

I think media will run big campaigns againts booing, like they did after the second day in the PanAms...

Booing will be heard in Volleyball and Football matches (due huge crowds and passion over these sports), but I do think this will be not a huge deal in Rio 2016.

The lesson was learned in 2007 and worked after 3-4 days.

But I must say: Volleyball matches without booing the servers is not volleyball...

Smile can be the sexiest curve in anyone's body.

That's some 'national legend' with many names and versions, but the common elements include a farmer who has a favorite cow and orders his servant to cook some meat, but he kills that cow instead and they call a witch doctor to revive it. Then the cow comes alive dancing and everybody party and dance around it. Actually this is a cultural demonstration called Boi Bumbá, Boi de Carnaval and many other names and this cow is actually a 'costume' and a person goes inside it and make the cow dance. The one cow in the pic is according to traditions from the state of Maranhão.

Danny, starting with you, you (Brazil) HAVE to change your attitude and behavior in volleyball. Just because it is acceptable in Brazil to do it, does NOT mean it is acceptable globally, You, Brazil, are just one nation. The other 203 nations do NOT behave that way. Ergo, it is not universally accepted behavior. You cannot use excuses like "...is not volleyball," etc. It is just NOT acceptable, Danny. The game was invented WITHOUT the booing. The Brazilians added the jumpserve. That's fine; but the BOOING is not. If Brazil wants to be accepted internationally as a good place to play volleyball...NOT just because it is popular there, Brazilian attitiudes about proper volleyball comportment should change. You have to look at yourselves in the mirror and say, "...is this the right behavior"? Otherewise, Danny, it's just boorish.

I do think no booings will be done in the Olympics and in Volleyball few is expected to happen...

It's hard to change behaviours, but it is achievable

Better than judge and give moral lessons abroad, it's good to try to understand other nations behaviours and culture...

Indeed, because if we talk about globally acceptance, Baron, you live in a country that really does not care about what the rest of the Globe thinks about many issues...

I really hope (and SAID SEVERAL TIMES HERE TO PEOPLE THAT SEEMS ARE BLIND SOMETIMES) media will make AGAIN campaigns to avoid booing and to be kind to our visitors.

Are we going to discuss booing for the next 4 years?

If you answer yes... BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

------

And yes, I do think funny to booo servers in Volley, Period.

It's not seen as an act of disrepect in the culture of my country, it's a joke and a way to say we are not supporting the other team.

But I agree, booing should be not done in the games.

The end.

London have been great, perfect games and NOT my favorite in all-time...

Beijing were much more spetacular and Athens meaningful. Indeed, besides the Beach Volleyball Arena, the venues seems very Ok to me...

Perfect, fun, well done and unbelieveable, but not the best in the history...

And the commentary abroad have been similar.

Well done London for great games!

That doesn't make sense. If they are perfect, then they can't be bettered. If they are not the best, then they are not perfect!

Make up your mind! ;)

But I'm sure Rio's games will be perfect! :)

Corrected this for you

Anyway, we put up with years of people saying London would pale in comparison to Beijing bla bla bla. I don't ever remember you logging on to tell those people they were arrogant.

Thanks for the correction! I really hope that that is the case. :) As for the rest, i haven't read such aggressive posts, as i don't have much history here. And don't be so defensive, i really think that london is doing a great job...
