IOC withholds SKorean soccer player’s Olympic medal until political protest case is judged

The International Olympic Committee will temporarily withhold a bronze medal from a South Korean soccer player who displayed a political sign after a game against Japan.

The action by the IOC remains in place until the player’s disciplinary case is completed by FIFA.

The IOC previously told Park Jong-woo’s team to bar him from the medal ceremony at Wembley Stadium on Saturday. South Korea beat Japan for the bronze medal.

IOC President Jacques Rogge says FIFA must first decide on possible sanctions. Rogge says “we will take a possible decision of what will happen with the medal later.”

After South Korea won on Friday, Park displayed a sign with a slogan supporting sovereignty over disputed islets that Japan also claims.

The IOC and FIFA prohibit on-field political statements.

Well, for one more Olympiad Canada will have something Brazil does not have: an Olympic gold medal in Football. Granted it was won in 1904 in a tournament that you could very, very generously describe as a joke... but hey, it happened.

Christine Sinclair gets suspended by FIFA for four games and fined for her behavior toward the ref Christina Pedersen in the Canada-USA semifinal match. I thought that amount of games should go to Melissa Tancredi not Sinclair because of the physical contact. I think FIFA wants to be a bully. No surprise Canadians are infuriated over this after the best performance for Canada's Olympians.

Olympic Champions nominated for FIFA Awards

Four members of the U.S. women's national team made the cut as the 10-player shortlist was revealed for the FIFA women's Ballon d'Or, given to the best player in the world.

Abby Wambach, Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe and Carli Lloyd, all members of the gold-medal-winning team from this past summer's Olympics, are among the finalists, which also include Canadian star Christine Sinclair, reigning award-winner Homare Sawa of Japan and five-time Brazilian winner Marta.

The other finalists were Japan's Miho Fukomoto and Aya Miyama and France's Camille Abily.

No American has won the award since Mia Hamm won the second of her consecutive honors in 2002. Wambach finished in third for the award in 2011, making her the first American to finish in the top three since Kristine Lilly finished in second in 2006. Current U.S. women's veteran Shannon Boxx finished in third in 2005.

Former U.S. women's coach Pia Sundhage, U.S. Under-20 women's coach Steve Swanson and Canadian women's coach John Herdman are among the 10 coaches on the shortlist for FIFA World Coach of the Year for Women's Football.

The shortlists for the men's FIFA Ballon d'Or and Coach of the Year awards will be revealed on Oct. 29, and the top three vote-getters for all of the award categories (including the Puskas award for best goal of the year) will be announced on Nov. 29 at a press conference in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The winners will be recognized on Jan. 7 at the Ballon d'Or gala in Zurich, Switzerland.

South Korean footballer suspended for displaying political banner at London 2012 Olympics

FIFA have banned a South Korea player for two internationals and warned the country's FA after he displayed a political banner during the Olympics.

Jongwoo Park celebrated at the end of his side's bronze medal win over Japan by waving a banner supporting sovereignty of a group of islands that is disputed territory between the two countries.

FIFA's disciplinary committee has banned the midfielder for two matches for unsporting behaviour and fined him 3,000 Swiss francs.

FIFA said in a statement: "The committee considered it appropriate to also impose a warning on the Korea Football Association and reminded it of its obligation to properly instruct its players on all the pertinent rules and applicable regulations before the start of any competition, in order to avoid such incident in the future.

"Should incidents of such nature occur again in the future, the FIFA disciplinary committee may impose harsher sanctions on the Korea FA."

SEOUL/LAUSANNE, Switzerland, Feb. 12 (Yonhap) -- South Korean footballer
Park Jong-woo will be awarded his long-awaited Olympic bronze medal,
following a ruling by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) over his
controversial celebration at the London Summer Games, officials said
Tuesday.

After the IOC Disciplinary Commission reviewed Park's
case on Monday, the IOC's executive board said it decided to give the
player the medal he had been barred from collecting for six months, and
only warned him for his action in London.
