Watched my first Paralympic medal ceremony of the games tonight and i really really like the mascot soft toys with the coloured hair of the medals won....

What a farce these games were. When will the IOC learn its lesson and stop awarding to countries like China and Brazil without the legacy infrastructure. Just because they can overspend to build the games doesn't mean the owners of the facilities after the games can afford to keep them. Worst Summer Olympics in memory.

Looks to me to be political back passing and playing chicken as to which government agency will finally be lumbered with the clean-up bill when the buck stops. The Maracana was long the cathedral of Brazilian sport well before the Olympics hit town and will be that cathedral for long years to come.

Remember Rio government is pretty much bankrupt at this moment, so they're still on the process of assigning the handling of the venues to the central Government. Still, holy crap...what the hell happened to Maracana? I thought the stadium was supossed to going to be used again for the football league. 

Also, why are they putting all the blame on the organizing comittee for the disrepair? The stadium was barely even used for the Games. Only for the ceremonies and the football finals. How do you mess a stadium like that with just a couple of things?

Well, exactly. Especially when you look at what they're pointing to - smashed windows, seats stolen and a statue stolen. All would seem to point to vandals who've been wreaking crap after the games while Maracana SA and the Rio govt argue over who is to take responsibility for getting it ready for normal operation. I don't see what it's got to do with the actual games.

It was renovated for the world cup in 2014.

It did have massive rebuilding in preparation for the 2014 World Cup- and here's a description of its situation in 2015:

According to experts, an equation involving the low quality of the matches and their start time (often at 10pm) plus the high cost to operate the stadiums' modern equipment explains the deficit.

In 2014, during Rio state championship, Maracanã accumulated losses of $1.94 million (R$6 million).

Apparently a consortium of companies has been ordered to pay the upkeep on the Maracanã or face fines. The bigger problem regarding Rio's legacy IMO is the closure of Deodoro Park and the possible closure of the Olympic Golf Course (this has become a huge white elephant and Rio could've easily used an existing course). Even Paes admitted the golf course was not a sound investment but it was necessary for the Olympics. It's not the debacle Athens was in terms of white elephants but I think it will be close to it.
