WorldCupJoe
The game goes on! World Cup Soap-opera, chapter #189: The paperwork that almost cancelled a game http://www.news.com.au/breaking-news/friendly-between-brazil-and-england-in-rio-cancelled-by-judge-then-reinstated-hours-later/story-e6frfkp9-1226654763064 And about the stadiums, it will be awesome to have one of Brazil's stadiums here in the Netherlands. The most modern and important stadium here is the Amsterdam ArenA, venue for the Europa League final just a couple of weeks ago. It's such an ugly structure.. from the in- and the outside. I'm jealous of Brazil..
Bezzi
It's funny. We had envy when the Amsterdam arena was built. Still a fantastic arena, but the beautiful today can be the ugly tomorrow, so I'm proud of what they did with Maracanã and Mineirão. Stadiums 60, 50 years old that have been preserved. They could have done the same with Wembley that had much more history. It looks modern today, but soon will be a common stadium.

I could not believe that they demolished the towers, still don't understand why.
Rob2012
What's right for one stadium might not be right for another. Maracana was ripe for redevelopment given that its basically an enormous concrete bowl. Wembley needed a complete rebuild though - it was too small, in a terrible state, and didn't have any facilities to speak of, so razing it to the ground and starting over was the only real option. It's sad in a small way the twin towers went but they were nothing special architecturally, and the room they occupied was needed - it's not like they had unlimited land for the new stadium, it had to fit in the old one's footprint. And the towers would've looked ridiculously tiny next to a modern 90k seat stadium. I'm glad they're gone rather than looking dwarfed and pathetically out of place. The Brazilian and English FAs made the right decisions with respect to their national stadiums. Having gone to the old Wembley, I really don't miss it. Even as a 13 year old I couldn't fit in the seats.
Bezzi
I still think they could think of a solution that preserve at least part of the facade. Something that anyone could pass in front and remember what happened there. The old Wembley was beautiful. I just saw the new Luzhniki design and I think they will commit the same crime. The germans preserved their olympiastadions in Berlin and Munich, I hope the russians do the same.
WorldCupJoe
You really have a point RobH, but maybe i'm just too much of a romantic. I know they would have looked very tiny (thanks for the visual aid) and architecturally they may have not been very special, but i like nostalgia, history and culture and i still think that features like this can be incorporated into a new stadium in a classy and appropriate way. The rest of Wembley was indeed ready to be demolished. But enough about Wembley.. I'm really happy with the fact that Brazil has these old renovated stadiums. Rob2012
I still think they could think of a solution that preserve at least part of the facade. How? Given the footprint of a modern 90k stadium (the towers were where the pitch is now), the constraints of the site, and the fact the stadium bowl needed completely rebuilding, I can't think of any way they could've maintained the façade. I completely understand your and Joe's nostalgia for the old place, but I don't think you're being realistic Bezzi. I think you're being more than little unfair on the architects actually because, whatever you think of the new stadium, knocking down the old one and starting again was not a "crime" but the only realistic option. Anyway, sorry, back on topic...
ofan
Were you looking for something similar to what they did at Barcelona's Olympic stadium. ?
Bezzi
I don't know what Barcelona hosted before the Olympics. Should not be so important because I only remember this stadium after 92. If they had demolished and built another would make no difference. But Wembley has already hosted the Olympics and World Cup. It was a historic stadium. I disagree when they say their architecture was not relevant. At some time the Colosseum of Rome must have been considered outdated. He should be demolished? I know that the towers would not fit in the project, but I think the new project is that should adapt to the old. But I understand Robh. Keep some old feature would cause some loss. Maracana and Wembley have similar capabilities, but the visibility of the field in the english stadium is much better.

cslopes54
Wow it's looking beautiful, by far the best external design and surroundings It's it will also light up for the Confederations I'm hoping !
menegazfelipe
Indeed. Pernambuco Arena's surroundings are by far the best. I was very disappointed by Mineirão's esplanade; it looked much better on the renders.

WorldCupJoe
I still find that Arena Pernambuco a weird stadium in some way, in a positive way though. Don't know why. It's unusual looking on the outside, but very familiar looking on the inside. Can't put my finger on it. I took me a while to realize that picture is a real image instead of a rendering. Great image..
cslopes54
Great Video! And I agree on Mineirao above^ along with Castelao I wish there could've been more development and more thought on the area. Perhaps by the World Cup there'll be many events to take place =]

cslopes54
Cuiaba, Manaus , and Natal have already started on the roof structure. Curitiba not so sure, it's been the slowest progression of them all

Bezzi
The stadiums have six months until the deadline (December 2013). Recife's stadium six months ago looked like this: Recife's Cidade da Copa I think all the stadiums are more advanced than Recife six months ago. All except Curitiba completed the structure of the stands and all have started assembling the roofs. I think there's a good margin, some will be completed before december. I hope they pull it off, but some are cutting it close.
Bezzi
That is why I'm worried about Arena da Baixada. All other stadiums are in the hands of big companies. But most indoor environments in Baixada are ready. It's more an expansion than reconstruction.
MrCatra
Ok peepz, here comes a shitload of pics from the most beautiful and most modern arena in Brazil, The Corinthians Arena (Corinthians is FIFA's Clubs World Cup current Champion). I got tired of waiting for mr. bezzi and mr. danny, so I decided to post it myself. Drainage system of the field: LED Facade in the East Side: Damn, the forum limits the number of pics we can add. Someone please post here inbetween my future post.
