Durban Sandshark
A few other reasons why Puerto Rico will NOT achieve statehood (and dissolve its NOC) anytime soon: --nearly 500,000 of the 1.8 million PR voters left the statehood question blank (recommended by the PPD), if added to votes for other options like independence and soveriegn free association then 45% of the electorate supported statehood --Alejandro Javier Garcia Padilla, PPD leader, unseated pro-statehood Republican Luis Guillermo Fortuno Burset for governor --too costly for the US to subsidize Puerto Rico's economy that will suffer under the US tax system --2/3 of Puerto Ricans aren't fluent in English and there's strong opposition in Washington to incorporate a Spanish-speaking state as the 51st (in other words, the US government does not want to have its own version of Quebec in Canada with an area that is predominantly non-English speaking) --Puerto Rico would likely gain more national legislators than many existing states
baron-pierreIV
Nah. They're going to lose their independent Miss Universe, International representation. SO it ain't gonna happen. RIght now, they already enjoy all the privileges of US citizenship, only no representation and NO income tax. How bad a deal could that be?
