Olympian2004
He said that he's confident that he knows at least a part of the lighting moment, but he apparently doesn't know what the cauldron will look like and where it will be.
Kenadian
Don't even think about the 'moment' happening anywhere but inside that stadium. Sure, it could end outside. But the final carrier of that flame will be holding the torch in that stadium in front of the assembled athletes.

mattperiolat
Lighting the cauldron is the climax of the OC. It will happen at the stadium -- not elsewhere (Thames, Mall, etc.) Vancouver would like a word with you, Athens. Seriously, even if there is a cauldron in the stadium, there is nothing indicating there will not be more than one. True, we do not know that for certain, but I really am getting a feeling London is trying to do something creative here.
msp2032
The next to final torch bearere will stand on a platform in the the middle of the stadium and Princess Diana, John Lennon, Elvis Presley will rise from the stage to carry the torch to the top of the stadium. A UFO will appear and deliver the cauldron(yeah right!!). I think the cauldron will be either 1. Inside the stadium(possibly above) 2. On top of the orbit tower(why would they be just have it stand there?) 3. Another location in the city(London Bridge, Millienium Wheel, Hyde Park, Big Ben,) Like others have mentioned they maybe plannng something we have never seen before. Though I doubt they would use a "virtual cauldron" or have cauldron at all. It will be interesting see what they have in mind.

antonius2012
The last torch bearer will stand on the ledge platform above the tree and light a cauldron that is assembled from parts and suspended above the roof.
londonbound
I know this is about location, but I think the identity of the lighter could indicate something. Specifically, lots of people expected Bannister but the Daily Mail says its between Daley Thompson and Steve Redgrave http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/olympics/article-2172857/London-2012-Games-Daley-Thompson-Sir-Steve-Redgrave-battle-light-Olympic-flame.html Bannister appeared fairly frail a few days ago. The fact that he wasn't an option suggests that some degree of fitness may be required to light the thing -- it is going to be more like Li Ning than Muhammed Ali. Seriously, even if there is a cauldron in the stadium, there is nothing indicating there will not be more than one. True, we do not know that for certain, but I really am getting a feeling London is trying to do something creative here. Yes, but Vancouver's cauldron was lit inside the stadium. I was there. I saw it. Sure, that was just a ceremonial cauldron, but we all knew that there couldn't be a 17 day burning flame inside BC Place in its pre-2011 renovation condition. The awkward Wayne Gretzky truck ride wasn't shown on the screens in the stadium. That was all to account for a logistics issue - a roof. London doesn't have that problem, so if they do anything other than have a cauldron outside of Olympic Stadium, it will be for some other purpose. Symbolism, perhaps? Or wanting to share the flame with the non-ticketed public. For the Summer Games, there has never been an Olympic Games where the main flame was not in or attached to the athletics stadium, and only one (Montreal) had a temporary ceremonies only flame. The Winter Games, however, have done it all differently. Torino's flame was outside the stadium. Vancouver's was on the waterfront. Calgary and Salt Lake had supplemental flames in their downtowns and Sarajevo, Lake Placid and other past games had temporary indoor closing ceremony flames. So what ever London does could possibly be different, we'll find out in 2 weeks. And then we'll all have to start the speculation on what Rio is going to do since it will be the first Summer Olympics to not use the athletics stadium for the Opening Ceremony, creating a whole new set of ruffled feathers.

London doesn't have that problem, so if they do anything other than have a cauldron outside of Olympic Stadium, it will be for some other purpose. I think practically speaking, London's stadium's roof strcuture is as inhibiting as BC Place's dome. 1. It goes around the entierty of the bowl, leaving no open spot for a cauldron on the stadium's periphery or atop its open stands. 2. Its floodlights rise unusually high above the roof, forcing an outside stadium cauldron tower to be (at this point, with no construction visible) unrealistically tall and if actually built, forced to compete with the floodlights themselves for prominence when seen from within the stadium. 3. Unlike Beijing's, London's roof seems far too light to support all that ceremony rigging, aerial staging areas, and a cauldron. I think whatever London ends up doing, it will have been done out of necessity more than anything else. And two weeks out, all I can realistically see is a "ceremony-only" cauldron and an identical one outside the stadium, whether in the Park or elsewhere in London. But I don't think we'll have to sit through anymore awkward post-Ceremony truck rides - I think we'll just wake up on the morning of the 28th and find a lit cauldron somewhere outside the stadium and they'll just play it off as if this second cauldron is actually just the original one lit at the ceremony the night before, but just moved overnight. Terribly messy, but what else can they do?
rodrigo_dpc
hi everyone - reading this discussion for a while - came to my own personal conclusion, i'd like to share: so after looking at 'new' pics on skyscrapercity i had a closer look on that famous plate outside the main stadium - and thought to myself > why is there still temporary (building-site) fencing around that area > and what the hack are they doing under that huge foot-bridge (coloured area) ??? Take a look at this sign in the area near that colored bridge. What are they hiding that can't be photographed?

Kenadian
Unless they are making a lead and concrete cauldron supported by a whale and fueled by a million pounds of gasoline, I don't know why so many people think that the cauldron will be so heavy that it would knock down the stadium roof (and if the stadium roof is that fragile, I wouldn't want to sit under it!). Some lightweight metal and a gas line...boom...you've got a cauldron. I have every confidence that this is a well thought out and well planned affair. Not a barbeque on the back of lorry that they just picked up on special at Sainsburys (and sorry, I'm not British, so if my references are off, I apologize). TheOtherRob
You were doing well till the penultimate letter of apologise. Anyway, you're right. This has been a complete new-build, not just the stadium but the entire Park. The constraints re the floodlights, roof structure etc. are not ones foistered on the organisers because it's their stadium done to their spec built within the planning phase of an Olympics. That's quite different from the BC Place situation where there were known limitations before the organisers even sat down and thought about the ceremonies. paul65
Don't think there is anything too sinister or cauldron related going on under the multicoloured bridge. Looking at Google earth images suggests that this bridge is important for all manner of pipes that cross the park. Possibly what we can see in your image Waldi is the protective conduit? paul
I would imagine the roof could support it, but hard to imagine the design that would compliment and stands out from the complex riggings/lights/struts/supports. So excited to see it! I can't wait to open this and see a BIG picture of it being build or moved into place or in it's hidding place.......or even more exciting to see it revealed at THE moment! Many questions about the look and design continue, can the cauldron elevate the entire scheme to another level.....I hope so. Good luck London, all the the world waits and wishes all the best for your beautiful games. Edited July 13, 2012 by paul

Well, if that roof can indeed hold up whats would probably be a very sculptural cauldron by Heatherwick, is there even space on it to hold it? And if we've been able to discount the Orbit as a possibility partly because of how messy it would look, I think we can partly discount the roof as the location just because of how messy a flame amongst all that rigging, steel support structure, and huge floodlights would look. FDLondon
- my money remains on lighting inside to a cauldron outside. I'm pretty confident that I know at least part of the lighting 'moment' but certainly not going to post it here! I think I know part of the moment you are speaking about from recent rehearsals but still don't know 'where' Take a look at this sign in the area near that colored bridge. What are they hiding that can't be photographed? That's not that near the coloured bridge - the McD's in the background is the other one in Orbit Circus. And that sign is just the one that you see as you go into 'Ceremonies' land that the volunteers, cast and construction bods walk past every day. alphamale86
As the last true secret left to be revealed for london 2012 the wait is starting to drive me crazy. I check Games bids religiously now for any breaking new and I am continuously met with more speculation. It's only going to be 1 cauldron. The stadium was created with the opening ceremony in mind as well as the athletics so they knew a cauldron would determine some elements of the design. I do like the thought of the flame burning in the heart of london but again i say there is only going to be one.
