xtclvr05
maybe it's just wishful thinking, but it's still possible to have fire actually go all the way around the stadium and up the lighting rigs. look at the inner ring of the the roof. dosnt that look like pipes? gas lines? NY20??
I'm pretty sure they're just part of the roof's busy support structure.
DesmondChan
I also think so now that one of the triangle roof will turn into Couldron. They already installed long time ago!

TJ18
Hi guys, Im new to this forum and I am so excited about the olympics! I have a proposal of where the cauldron might be located. You have disccused whether a cauldron could be located outside the stadium however this is not very viable as there are few places in which the cauldon could be located opposite the VIP area which would be too close to the orbit and the catering pods. So I started to think inside the stadium, and as it is Thomas Heatherwick designing the cauldron I think there will be some sort of mechanism involved in the cauldron, moving it from out of view, into full view for the spectators and the only place in which this could occur is if it is being built behind the huge TV screens inside the stadium and during the ceremony these TV screens can be moved apart and the cauldron canbe moved into full view, only an idea but I think that they seem to be hiding it and no contruction has occured outside stadium. what do you think ??? Jonafin
Hi guys, Im new to this forum and I am so excited about the olympics! -------- what do you think ??? Hi TJ18, WELCOME to the forum.... where you from mate? Your proposal is definately a logical one, given that so far we have not seen any suspicious construction near, in or around the stadium. But hey, the opening ceremony is still quite a few weeks away.... so we might see a "quick to assemble" cauldron appear over night. Maybe it will be in three pieces and they put it together during the ceremony. Still hope it is not attached to the Orbit.
TJ18
Thanks TorneoBlu, you're right they still have alot of time to assemble a cauldron outside and they will probally leave it till the last few weeks, I am from England btw, so I am really excited about this summers games! and yes we do have a while to wait yet till some info leaks about exactly where the cauldron will be located. If it is a cauldron inside the stadium, by the tv screens is the only availiable room, either that or it would be a tall structure standing in the stadium but as AustralianFan says that would be too risky with the all the wires for the opening ceremony. Maybe it is an outside cauldron, I just hope that it is not on the orbit, as the two designs would clash and look out of place. I they have the cauldron in three peices they will be coping a scene from athens, but it would look cool. Outside the stadium three is few places for the cauldron to go, so Im stuck. afiqnadzir
The upper tiers and the roof of the London Stadium is temporary and thin. So there are very strong engineering reasons why the London organisers are highly unlikely to have any sort of Cauldron on the roof - it is not strong enough to support a grand Summer Olympic Games Cauldron. Any Cauldron on London's temporary Stadium would have to be so small and light that it would be hardly noticeable. It would look like a tealight candle. The thin temporary roof is supported by that network of metal supporting struts. There are also triangular supporting struts on the roof, separate from the triangular lighting towers, which anchor the many flying wires which right now criss cross above the Stadium's arena. So expect lots of flying theatrical moments during the Opening Ceremony. After the London Games, the roof and the top tiers of the Stadium will be removed and its capacity will be dramatically reduced in publicly announced legacy plans. London's Stadium roof is very different to the permanent very strong and thick roof of Beijing's Stadium roof which supported a big Cauldron. To set ablaze the whole roof as a circle or crown of fire above a Stadium full of people to itself become the Cauldron, or the fireball pathway to one, would be a nightmare safety scenario on a permanent stadium, let alone the thin temporary roof which is London's. bukit jalil national stadium already used fireball running trough stadium roof in sea games 2001

Shrek201
Ring if fire NOT going to happen. At the Innsbruck YOG in January, they only lit the 3 cauldrons for like 1.5 minutes--not even until the end of the ceremony, in order to be economical and environmentally sensitive. What more an idiotic, completely hazardous "ring-of-fire" idea? Please, people, get sensible!!
Olympian2004
A cauldron beside or even behind one of the TV screens? That's not going to happen -- then they couldn't use the TV screen anymore. And they definitely need two screens in the stadium, one for the TV pictures and the other for the scoreboard. Additionally, the roof is above the TV screens respectively it's almost above the area in front of the TV screens. So an extendable cauldron would get in the way of the roof. Or, to use the old Vancouver horror scenario, it would burn it.

Nacholympic
I don't imagine the lighthing. Maybe we are creating a lot of expectatives and it could be quite simple as Vancouver did. Can you imagine a "better" version of the lighting in Shenzhen for the Universiade FISU Games in 2011 when they set on fire the athtetic track and the fire went on till the cauldron?? I don't like the idea of a "internal" cauldron, since Olympics have to be share with everyone (Indeed, the motto is "Everyone's London 2012", so it would be counterproductive) Remember the "selfish" cauldron in Seoul??? No man!!!! The idea of a second or external cauldron, as in Vancouver, pleased me a lot!!!! Not only Vancouver had a external cauldron, remember in Doha for the Asian Games, the astrolabe internal caludron and the external one in the tower next to the Califa Stadium. During the Panamerican Games in Guadalajara, Mexico there was a second cauldron in the track field at Telmex Athletic Stadium. It was a exact copy of the "official one" which was set up on the Omnilfe Stadium's roof..
Shrek201
/\ Vancouver's was simple? No; a $60 million ceremony has to end on a HIGH, dramatic note--not some simple light a candle moment. The whole thing will just fall flat.
NY20??
Didn't Seb Coe say he has seen diagrams of the "lead-up" to the lighting? This would suggest the lighting won't be one quick event like Barcelona or Torino but a longer affair like Beijing, right?

Nacholympic
I insist in the idea od double cauldron... I'd like to have to if Santiago gets the Panamerican Games, One in the stadium and one in downtown. London could do so, that is the way to say "London has the games" and not only "The Olympic parks has the games", can you see???

London could do so, that is the way to say "London has the games" and not only "The Olympic parks has the games", can you see??? The legacy of London 2012 is this massive urban park. I would think that having only one cauldron, in the park, would draw those Londoners who want to see the flame to the park and experience this redevelopment for themselves. Even if they only want to see the flame, they could see how this part of London has changed and is now a destination unto itself. Having a cauldron in the CBD, removed from that context, just seems a bit off, at least to me. Vancouver did it, but at least the cauldron was next to one the Olympic legacies, the convention center.
