Another interesting photo showing in the background (between the two mascots) the imposing proximity of the Cauldron Tower, oops, I meant to say Orbit Tower, to the central arena in the Olympic Stadium. This photo downloaded from the London 2012 website.

I have a feeling the cauldron will be under the end stage ala Sydney and raised up

Same here, although I don't want it to be so similar to Sydney. I vote for more originality.

Also, why people are still obsessed with that hideous thing being the cauldron. Did you forgot it was already announced Heatherwick will design it?

I don't know where or what the cauldron will be, but I simply cannot imagine combining a Heatherwick cauldron with the Orbit. Heather wick has too much taste to agree to such a notion. Either they've abandoned Heatherwick or the cauldron is on the Orbit (yuck). I can't see any way it could be both.

What I meant to say is either they've abandoned Heatherwick and the cauldron is on the Orbit (yuck) or they are working with Heatherwick and the cauldron is elsewhere. It can't be both.

and i also can't imagine if there is another tall structure beside orbit..it will look awkward and people will start comparing..i just assume, that they will make 2 cauldron, inside and outside, something like vancouver...is that possible?

I really don't expect two cauldrons. If the cauldron is distinct from the Orbit, it will have to be positioned so that the two structures don't compete visually.

I still let a small option on the location I spotted on the first page of this thread... a tall structure built in the middle of those circles, at the opposite of the Orbit.... (very small bet on that.. just a few pennies, but I will not close the door now.....)

Good. I don't think it should be ruled out either.

I am sure that whereever the Cauldron finally sits it, attached to the Orbit or elsewhere, it will look very tasteful and absolutely fantastic.

But just because we cannot imagine it happening, doesn't meant it's not possible. The place we cannot imagine, may be the place they will put the Cauldron.

Thats the thing the Organisers have on their side, the element of surprise.

Vancouver's two Cauldrons did happen at a Winter Games. But, unless someone can recall otherwise, I think there has only ever been one Cauldron at Summer Games.

I stand by my earlier post. They will not attach a Heatherwick cauldron to the Orbit.

It's Heatherwick or the Orbit. Not both.

Actually, I think your idea makes sense. Remember Doha 2006 Asian Games? They also had a huge tower close to the stadium (Aspire Tower) (but taller and was not as hideous as this) . They used a cauldron inside the stadium (that gian astrolabe thing) and inmediatly, a cauldron in the Aspire Tower was lit (which could be seen from everyone)

I think this is what mght happen

I am beginning to fancy the idea of having a single small sized cauldron 'piece/ sculpture' inside the stadium itself, preferably on a permanent stage at either end of the stadium. It has not been done in a Summer Games for a long time, and I feel a cauldron that is not the usual gigantic, sticking out on the periphery of stadium room structure can be quite unique. I hope it will be a relatively small scale, beautifully sculpted piece, erected on the stage and can be seen by spectators in the stadium only. It will work well with the intimate setting of the stadium

Rio 2011 Military Games had a cauldron that fits perfectly in your desire and discription for London cauldron.

I don't think it fits in the original "everyone's Games" concept of London 2012 if they have a cauldron that can be seen only from within the stadium. It also doesn't fit into our modern media society which longs for spectacular respectively strong images. How spectacular or strong could it be if they just dipped the torch in a fairly small bowl on the edge of the infield or on a stage in the stands?

I simply cannot imagine such a scenario. There must be a cauldron outside the stadium or at least (if any possible, due to the "conflict" with the tall and bright floodlights) on the roof.

But I think such intimate and small-scale ceremony fits in well with Danny Boyles style of the ceremony. Especially with Heatherwick's design, a small cauldron can be extremely beautiful and clever judging by his previous works. It's almost like a jewel on the stage

With such a magnificent olympic park, I truly doubt that the cauldron will be only seen from the inside of the stadium... and you have primary to remember that during the first week of the games, no one will see the flame as the athletics is only the second week !

And i think, it became a kind of requirement to have the cauldron seen by everyone at any time ...

That brings to me a major reflexion (but we should open a new thread for that in due time....) on where will be the cauldron for the Rio 2016 olympics.... Maracana ? Havelange Stadium ? Olympic Park ? Sugar Load ? Corcovado ?????

Hmmm... that is a good point...

This is part of why I don't like Rio's concept. I'm sure the flame will be at Maracana where relatively little competition takes place. In fact, only one gold medal will be awarded there (football). I am not happy about this.

If they introduce multiple cauldrons they will do it in Rio. I am still bothered by the fact that the athletics, ceremonies and cauldron are not all at the same venue.

yerp.....is that possible to have cauldron attach to floodlight?

No. Gas lines. Plus, why would you want a floodlight shooting straight down on spectators like that?

Posted

If they never put a set of floodlights right above one of the screens (the one bent over in the above rendering), that area on the roof would have worked well for a cauldron I think.

*If they had never, I should say
