London 2012 Olympic Cauldron...

Recommended Posts

I've just notice this game shot of a london 2012 mini game..

I've noticed there is some activity (small building works) on that side of the stadium..

Perhaps this may go up automatically? As in ''rise''? That way they could keep it a secret and cover it up? T.H Could design the cauldron which is lit inside the stadium, as that ones isn't very... him.

just speculation, though.

James, you're a newbie, so you can't know this -- but we had that computer game cauldron over and over in our discussions. It's just a makeshift cauldron they use for that SEGA Game for each edition of the Olympics. They also used it for the Beijing game and even put it in the wrong location (namely within one of the stadium's stands, right below the roof). It doesn't bear any resemblance of the actual Beijing cauldron, and it certainly won't bear any resemblance of the actual London cauldron.

Btw, when did the pictures from Beijing's roof-top disguise tent come out? A week before the OC?

No, they already came out two months before the Games. So it was a rather long process for Beijing installing and completing its cauldron on the Birds' Nest's roof.

More evidence that the lighting is going to be different to what has gone before. I'm reasonably sure I know at least part of the 'moment', and it is going to be both beautiful and clever. (I don't buy the five athletes idea, I think it's press speculation.)

London 2012 Olympics: five athletes may light flame at opening ceremony - One of the men deciding who will light the Olympic cauldron at Friday night’s opening ceremony has given a strong hint yet that it will not be Sir Steve Redgrave or Daley Thompson.

Five igniters originally was my guess many years ago (I believe, around the time of the Beijing Games) for London's cauldron lighting. But meanwhile, after seeing the Vancouver cauldron lighting, I'm not too much of a fan of that idea anymore. Someone here recently said that it takes the focus away from that moment and that it's much more climatic if one person or at least one team in the same location (as in Salt Lake) lights the cauldron. I agree to that. So I hope that they won't have several igniters.

And what that article mentions - namely the rumour that Muhammad Ali could be among the five final torchbearers - is just bollocks. I mean, has anyone seen how Ali looked like when he celebrated his 70th birthday in January? His illness has apparently progressed to a very bad state:

I don't buy the five athletes idea and I think it devalues the honour somewhat. And as well as literally as a moment it just didn't work for Vancouver IMO - other than Wayne Gretzky I took no notice of who else lit the flame.

It has to be an Olympian, it has to be a Brit and it should not be a political decision. For me keeping in with the theme of the games it should be someone in the 2012 squad - but also someone who has already proved themselves on the Olympic stage. That narrows it down to Chris Hoy for me.

The Ali rumor is sheer fantasy. I mean #1 - is he even in London? #2 - How can you stage-direct someone who has NO control over his faculties and abilities? I mean you have to set him up like a puppet on strings to get him to do things in the proper time and place. It would be a big liability. And the Loudmouth had his chance in 1996. No more honors for you, Mr. Windbag!!

Size it down a little, Baron. "Loudmouth" and "Mr. Windbag" aren't really appropriate names for a man who can hardly speak anymore due to his illness. And regardless of whether one liked his personal style when he was still healthy, one should show a bit more respect to a person stricken by such a serious disease.

Out of order in my opinion Baron, I've not been around here long but know there's no need to insult people.

Anyhow, I couldn't get the picture of the BBC studios to load so here's another one.

According to TEBC on Skyscrapercity, Brazilian TV will be broadcasting from one of the blue studios below the hexagonal BBC studio on top of this complex.

Ah, not quite, I think they're in the apartment block converted into a broadcast tower, Lund Point:

The BBC has the top floor, and other broadcasters have rented space below. A good idea really.

There's a nice touch on them though if you note the coloured strips down the edge of the containers - if you look over the bridge where this sits, they reflect the 'crayon' mooring posts in the River Lea. Or at least, I assume they're supposed to match!

Still nothing visible.. it will be either within the stadium or coming out of the ground outside the stadium

Or... it is on top of the orbit somewhere.

Are there any other options five days before the Games?

I'm sure it's in that center hole PLUS, I think the five rings waiting in the roof will somehow interact with whatever goblet/chalice-like thing comes out of the center hole. And then they'll just transfer it somewhere.

Then please leave

How rude. Why?

I actually totally agree with this.

I check the thread on the off-chance something is unearthed at the eleventh hour, but I don't really expect a big revelation.

Some commercials can actually be entertaining and interesting. That's why I keep checking the thread.

There was nothing insulting about my post. I simply said that LOCOG has beat us all and that in the absence of new information tangents are to be expected and I don't feel guilty about participating in them. I'm not jumping all over people, criticizing them left and right. If it's fun for you to speculate further, please do so, but don't get too bothered by a bit of topic drift considering the situation.

Then you told me to leave.

The public rehearsals are stopping at the start of the Parade of Athletes so that they can empty the stadium by 10.15pm.

And yes, even without Colonel Iredale breathing down our necks, the volunteers are all invested in #savethesurprise

Do you or the others still see my comment you are referring to? Because strangely, it seems to have vanished (at least for me). It was between Athensfan's post and yours.

Just out of curiosity: Do you also know where the cauldron will be? If yes, may I ask you only this: Is it a location someone of us guessed already or is it somewhere completely new?

Can i just say, if anyone is reading this forum and thinking of blowing the surprise, please think again. We are only 5 days away now and everyone has worked so hard to keep it a surprise. Can we please have that surprise, for once.

I can confirm that to you at 8:30pm (GMT-3) tonight, when SporTV is unveiling they're studios in London. The dispute between Rede Record (free-to-air) and SporTV (pay tv; which is a Rede Globo subsidiary, who lost the rights to Record) is becoming very exciting. Record is dedicating much of its programming to the Olympics, and SporTV announced four HD channels on pay tv. Information that I found:

Two forces of the media joined efforts for the Olympics in London. SporTV struck a deal with BBC, the largest broadcaster of the United Kingdom. The BBC is responsible for the construction of SporTV's panoramic studio, and support the staff of the Brazilian channel with structure and logistics in situ during the Olympic period. SporTV and the BBC also jointly produced a series of openers that show a three dimensional air tour, which will be used during the coverage of the Olympic Games in London. Always leaving the panoramic studios, subscribers will get to know - during the interlude between the broadcast of a competition to another - the real paths between the sports arenas.

Wish I could edit my posts... their*

I find such requests always a bit funny. Why are you reading such a thread then, if you don't want to know anything about the cauldron? At this point, this thread makes no other sense than actually getting a glimpse of the cauldron or at least some information where it will be. We have speculated about every thinkable location, we have speculated about so many different looks - so there's nothing more we can give to this thread than the plain information about the real thing.

Yes, if it has to be, I can wait the remaining five days. But since I guess that after all that has been leaked so far, there's still a chance that it could leak within the remaining five days, I come back here to this thread. After all these months and even years of speculation, I'm hungry for information. And apparently others, too. If you have a different approach to that, no one forces you to read this thread at this point.
