Have Azerbaijan/Georgia dropped their bid?

I just posted this article at 2026 World Cup thread

Azerbaijan-Turkey joint bid for World Cup 2026 depends on bid for EURO 2020

Baku, Fineko/abc.az. The Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan (AFFA) has defined itself with procedure of bidding to host maing football tournaments of the world.

AFFA Secretary General Elkhan Mammadov says that joint bidding with Turkey to host the soccer World Cup in 2026 (FIFA World Cup) depends largely on the fate of our joint-with-Georgia bid for EURO 2020.

"If our initiatives do not cause objections from the country’s government, today the scheme of promotion of bids is as follows - EURO 2020, and then World Cup 2026. Such a scheme will also enable to increase AFFA itself to accumulate experience in the world’s major football events," Mammadov said.

The issue with EURO 2020 arose from the fact that UEFA is considering a possibility of changing the scheme of holding the European Cup on football.

Azeri Sports Minister Blasts Platini's Euro 2020 Plan

Azerbaijan’s Minister of Sport has criticised Michel Platini’s multi-cities plan for the Euro 2020 championships – and insists his country will pursue its joint bid with Georgia.

“I don’t agree with the idea of Michel Platini,” Azad Rahimov told a group of reporters from the International Sports Press Association (AIPS), including INSIDER’s correspondent, in Baku.

“It’s only an idea, it’s not been confirmed and has still to be discussed in the executive board of UEFA," he said.

"I believe that it will not be successful and will not be agreed from the countries to host 2020 in different cities.”

He added: “It could be interesting but it is not possible for countries to develop a sport and football infrastructure.”

Rahimov’s comments came in a briefing with reporters at the Ministry of Youth and Sport on Monday.

During the session, he maintained his country’s ambition to host elite sporting events such as the Olympic Games and the plan to partner with neighbours Georgia to bid for Euro 2020.

"We are also bidding, with Georgia, for the 2020 European football championship," he said.

Turkey Prepares to Ramp Up Bid for UEFA Euro 2020 Championships

November 1, 2012

(WFI) The Turkish Football Federation is planning to aggressively promote its bid to stage the UEFA Euro 2020 tournament at a major football convention in Rio de Janeiro.

The TFF's announcement is accompanied by its first comments in months about the country's Euro 2020 ambitions. Meanwhile, Istanbul’s 2020 Olympic bid claims it will not be undermined by the TFF's upcoming promotion.

Turkish FA bosses will outline the seriousness of their plans to secure the European Championships at the Soccerex Global Convention in the Brazilian city, running from Nov. 24 to 28.

Turkish FA president Yıldırım Demirören and general secretary Emre Alkin will lead the delegation to Rio where a Turkish Pavilion will promote Turkey’s staging of the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup as well as their Euro 2020 bid. The TFF is also be sponsoring the Sunday night social evening at the Copacabana Palace.

“Turkey has the sixth biggest football economy in European football as well as one the most developed football economies in the world. Our primary reason for attending and sponsoring the social evening at the Soccerex Global Convention was an easy one given the success of former bids that have used Soccerex as a platform to reach the world of football," said Demirören in a statement.

"We believe that our financial and administrative expertise will allow us to gain strong support for our Euro 2020 bid.”

He added: “Through the Soccerex Global Convention, I want to point out once again to all important actors of football that we will demonstrate how Turkey is the right choice to host the 2020 UEFA European Championships."

But the Turkish FA’s quest is hampered by the Istanbul 2020 bid that comes with government support as well as UEFA president Michel Platini's revamp of the bidding process.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan told IOC president Jacques Rogge during the London Games that the Olympic bid was his government’s number one priority.

When Turkey turned out to be the only Euro 2020 bidder in May, UEFA president Michel Platini reopened the bidding process to member FAs. He also floated a plan to stage Euro 2020 across different European cities to mark the 60th anniversary of the first European Championship.

The English FA has already told UEFA that it is keen to host the Euro 2020 final at Wembley Stadium if Platini's plan gains lift-off.

Discussions are underway with UEFA’s 53 member federations with a decision due on the matter later this year. The UEFA Ex-Co will publish its detailed bid regulations in December.

Platini pushing for multi-country Euro 2020 – Zwanziger

(Reuters) – European soccer’s governing body UEFA is going ahead with a proposal for a Euro 2020 tournament hosted by half a dozen countries and not the usual one or two, Germany’s UEFA executive committee member Theo Zwanziger said on Tuesday.

Zwanziger, who was formerly head of the German Football Association (DFB), said the plan, still to be ratified by the UEFA executive committee, envisaged 12 countries hosting the expanded tournament which will feature 24 teams, up from the current 16.

“Michel Platini has told me his plan in a personal discussion,” Zwanziger told Bild newspaper. “But it still needs to be ratified by the executive committee.”

According to Zwanziger the plan foresees 12 countries hosting matches, with the countries chosen as seeded nations based on their UEFA ranking at the time and whether they have qualified for the competition.

If Germany qualified for the tournament they would play their group games at Berlin’s Olympic stadium, according to the newspaper.

Platini had said in October he would press ahead with the idea of staging Euro 2020 across the continent only if member associations were in favour of the plan.

The Frenchman said UEFA was waiting for feedback on its proposal, first announced at the end of Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine, and it would be a one-off.

“If the idea is appealing to them we will enter into details to see how we can organise a Euro in several European cities but only in 2020 mind you,” Platini told reporters in St Petersburg after a meeting of UEFA’s executive committee last month.

Platini has said the bigger competition in 2020 will be too costly for single or joint bids.

His idea of having matches in a dozen countries with the final stages in one venue will be discussed by the executive board in December, with a decision made early next year.

Turkey have expressed a wish to stage the tournament on a conventional, single-country basis but their bid will be dropped if Istanbul is awarded the Olympics in the same year.

Scotland, Wales and Ireland have also declared their interest in staging the finals.

Giant Euro 2020 concept has wide support - DFB

A plan to stage the 2020 European soccer championships across the entire continent instead of one or two countries enjoys wide support among national federations, Germany's football association (DFB) said on Tuesday.

Ahead of two days of meetings in Brussels with European soccer's governing body UEFA, DFB General Secretary Helmut Sandrock said they were initially surprised by UEFA boss Michel Platini's concept.

The proposal, yet to be ratified by the UEFA executive committee, could see 12 countries hosting an expanded tournament involving 24 teams, up from the current 16.

"We were surprised when we first heard the idea," Sandrock told ZDF television before departing for Brussels.

"But I myself had discussions to learn more about this idea and we know that there have been two strategy discussions with national federations already and there is a lot of support for such a Euro tournament," Sandrock said.

"We discussed this idea at the DFB as we had supported the Turkey 2020 bid but we know there is wide support from our partners in Europe (for Platini's pan)."

Turkey have expressed a wish to stage the tournament on a conventional, single-country basis but their bid will be dropped if Istanbul is awarded the Olympics in the same year.

Scotland, Wales and Ireland have also declared their interest in staging the finals.

Platini had said in October he would press ahead with the idea, which will both ease the burden of hosting a bigger tournament than usual amid testing financial times as well as to celebrate UEFA's 60th anniversary in 2020, only if member associations were in favour of the plan.

"I think a Euro across Europe offers a shorter road (of preparations)," Sandrock said. "Look at (2014 World Cup hosts)Brazil and the distance they need to cover."

Brazil have repeatedly been urged to speed up preparations for the World Cup after delays in construction and organisation of the world's biggest single sports event.

Euro 2020: Michel Platini's 13-city idea interests Scots

Scottish football chiefs will press the case for Glasgow being one of 13 cities that could host Euro 2020.

But the Scottish Football Association has also not given up on the possibility of hosting the tournament jointly with Ireland and Wales.

Uefa president Michel Platini has proposed the 13-city idea for the championship finals in 2020.

The various options will be discussed when top executives from around Europe meet over two days in Dublin.

SFA president Campbell Ogilvie is attending along with chief executive Stewart Regan, who said: "Platini's proposal is for 13 cities as opposed to one or two countries, or three in the case of Scotland, Ireland and Wales, which was our suggestion earlier in the year.

"The 2020 finals will be the 60th anniversary and they're considering something different.

"Irrespective of the outcome, there is a great opportunity for Scotland, either as the country as a whole or Glasgow putting its hat in the ring to be one of the host cities.

"Either option gives an opportunity for both Scotland and Glasgow.

"Which would we prefer? Well, we don't fully know the model for the 13-city proposal.

"Until we have all the facts, it's hard to answer."

No final decision is expected in Dublin, where Platini will also raise the possibility of the Champions League being expanded to replace the Europa League.

FIFA's Valcke against Pan-European Euro 2020

SAO PAULO: FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke claimed Friday that proposed plans to host Euro 2020 in several countries would "destroy the spirit of the competition".

"If I can express myself as Jerome Valcke, only, not FIFA's Secretary General, I would say that I don't understand it," explained the Frenchman.

"If it transpires that a tournament with 24 teams is more difficult to organise in just one or two countries...that destroys the spirit of the competition.

"But I don't want to be critical, I understand that it meets a need for UEFA given that Europe is in a crisis, but this is not what's best for the tournament. It's a choice imposed by the economic situation."

"For the World Cup, the interest is to come to South Africa (2010), then Brazil (2014). It's good to spend time in a country, to discover.

"We (FIFA) have have more than one country that can organise a World Cup. As a fan of football, the concept (of a competition spread out over multiple countries) doesn't correspond to the World Cup, we (FIFA) could have five continents available, Europe is just one continent," he concluded.

Valcke was responding to UEFA president Michel Platini's suggestion that a Euro 2020 played in a dozen nations simultaneously, could become a reality should a majority verdict be reached at UEFA's Executive Committee meeting on December 6. - AFP

(Reuters) - Euro 2020 will be staged in various cities across Europe rather than a single host country.

"The 2020 tournament will be staged across the continent in various major cities throughout Europe following a decision taken today," UEFA secretary general Gianni Infantino told reporters following an executive committee meeting on Thursday

Do all 13 hosts get a automatic qualification spot?

So who do you all think is going to host?

Obviously

London, Paris, Rome, Madrid, Istanbul, Moscow

Likely

Brussels, Amsterdam, one of Copenhagen or Stockholm

4 spots for Zagreb, Budapest, Bucharest, Warsaw, Kiev, Basel, Vienna, Prague, Belgrade, Athens, Glasgow and Dublin

Final in the country of the previous winner (one of Paris, Berlin, Madrid, Amsterdam or Rome)

Semis in London and Moscow

Quarters in the Finals list minus the Finals Host.

I think the top 13 countries in the UEFA coefficient will host.

So

Spain

Netherlands

Germany

Italy

England

Russia

Croatia

Greece

Portugal

Sweden

Denmark

France

Czech Republic??? (Idk about this one they don't have the stadium)

Ireland (if Czech declines/rejected

Fair mix of east and west Europe countries. Also excludes Istanbul who might host the Olympics.

Im surprised this is going ahead, but am glad, as it will reduce costs substantially. Congrats UEFA!

Paris will almost certainly not stage the Finals in 2020, as the city will host the 2016 finals. I'd suggest that Rome, London, Berlin and Barcelona/Madrid are the frontrunners.

I forgot Lisbon, so they is really only 3 spots for geopolitical considerations.

My best guess:

London, England: Wembley Stadium, 90,000.

Lisbon, Portugal: Estadio da Luz, 65,000

Madrid, Spain: Santiago Bernabeu, 80,000

Paris, France: Stade de France, 80,000

Rome, Italy: Stadio Olimico: 72,000

Amsterdam, Netherlands, Amsterdan Arena: 62,000

Berlin, Germany, Olympiastadion: 72,000

Moscow, Russia, Lushniki Stadion: 78,000

Istanbul, Turkey, Ataturk OlimpiyatStadi: 76,000

Bucharest, Romania, National Stadium: 56,000

I would prefer a redeveloped Parken Stadium over Friends Arena in Solna, but it will be one or the other

Brussels, Belgium, Koning Boudewijin Stadion: 50,000

Either a new stadium in Zagreb or Budapest at about 50,000.

I firmly believe the only fair way to decide the host of the Final is to give it to the winner of the previous tournament. As it stands now that would likely be Rome, Berlin or Madrid.

How is that in any way fair? Cities will bid, and then UEFA will vote - from my understanding on reading the statement issued by UEFA. This one-off event may give cities, other than the major capitals, the chance to stage a Euro Finals for the first (and probably) only time.

Ironically, your suggestion is utterly unfair.

Do you think that's how it'll work out? I'd be surprised if UEFA don't just go for the biggest stadiums on offer and most of those are in countries well capable of hosting a European Championships.

I suppose the exception might be cities like Athens - i.e. major cities with large stadiums in countries which would otherwise be unable to host.

But I can't see many of the major captials being passed up, and they'd account for most of the venues needed, leaving little for the smaller nations.

I agree with your other point though, I don't know why the 2016 winner automatically hosting the final would be any more "fair" than a bidding process. I mean, it could work like Eurovsion does, but I don't know why that'd be intrinsically more fair. it could actually end up being really unfair if France ended up winning 2016!

I think it is more fair to give a reward for excellence than just giving it to the biggest venue on the continent. And what bidding process? Almost every article on this idea has either directly or otherwise stated Wembley is the venue for the final. There is no bidding process when the outcome is already known.

I don't think you know that actually. I don't think anyone does at this early stage. I'm not going to take press speculation as gospel.

Wembley's one of the obvioous favourites - if not THE obvious favourite - because of its size AND its corporate and media facilities which make hosting big matches lucrative and very easy (it makes me laugh thinking back to Baron's posts during the 2018 bid process where he was inisistent the lack of room for corporate tents around the stadium would be a problem).

Nou Camp is bigger though so if UEFA is just handing it to the biggest stadium it'll be in Barcelona. And indeed the Bernabau could be bigger by 2020 too. And also, by 2020, Istanbul should also have a 90k seat stadium with the renovations they plan for their Olympic Stadium. Given that Turkey is the nation who's been snubbed for 2020, it's not at all inconceivable UEFA could throw them a bone and give them the final. I know the matchfixing problems are an issue for Turkey, and they might've contributed to UEFA's decision to go pan-European in the first place, but an Istanbul final is not out of the question.

Your idea could work, as long as France doesn't win 2016 (hosting two finals on the trot would be a bit much) but I don't see anything unfair in a bidding process. And I don't see a problem if capacity is a major factor in UEFA's decision either, ESPECIALLY given how many seats are reserved for corporates and the "footballing family". The bigger the better really as it'll mean more real fans get in.

The specific format of the tournament has yet to be agreed upon, but ideas put forward include a single country staging the climax of the tournament including the semi-finals and final. This is understood to be the preference of Platini.

The bidding process for the host cities will start in March, with the decision on those that have been successful being announced in spring of 2014.
