Blatter: Euro 2020 lacks heart and soul

FIFA president Sepp Blatter has hit out at UEFA's initiative to organize Euro 2020 in 13 different cities across Europe rather than in one country.

The 2020 championships will be held in multiple nations all over Europe to mark 60 years of the tournament's existence, a decision that has received its fair share of criticism over the past few months. Blatter has joined in, saying that he is one of the people that would prefer the tournament to be held in one country.

"I once told Michel Platini that Colonel Gaddafi presented a similar plan when he was bidding for the 2010 World Cup. He really believes in this idea, but I said it was out of the question. So Platini's idea is nothing new," Blatter told Kicker.

"A tournament should be played in just one country, that creates a certain identity and euphoria. Just look at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. It will not really be a European championship in the new format. You'll have to look at it in another way, although I don't know how exactly. A Euros like this misses heart and soul for me."

The host cities for Euro 2020 will be announced by UEFA in September 2014.

Finally... I agree with Blatter, a spread Euro gives more a Champions league vibe, it lacks the spirt of the host nation... I know times are difficult but several countries have the stdiums needed, I hope Plattini thinks about it.

I agree with Blatter too, but I think he's only trying to make FIFA and himself look better by pooh-hooing UEFA. Who is he to talk? As if Qatar is such a brilliant idea!

But money! Glorious, oilly money!

True. Please don't think i'm defending the man for a second, but I'm sure I read somewhere that Blatter didn't really want Qatar to win - I think he was more or less behind the US bid. Whilst Euro 2020 seems to be the brainchild of one man, Platini, I get the impression Qatar 2022 is more the result of a messy and corrupt FIFA ExCo rather than Blatter's desire.

Bulgaria Mulls Euro 2020 Bid

Bulgaria's government has voiced support for Sofia's likely bid to be one of the 13 cities to stage matches in the 2020 European Championship, but it is still clueless how to make it a success.

The Socialist-backed government is expected to give its official stamp of approval at its next sitting.

Mariana Georgieva, Bulgaria's Minister of Youth and Sport, has suggested that the National Stadium Vasil Levski may have to undergo a complete facelift to be eligible for such a prestigious competition.

Uefa, European football's governing body will launch the official bidding process in April 2014, and the 13 cities will be chosen the following September.

It is a change from the usual format, where one or two countries hosted the tournament every four years.

Bulgaria should announce its interest in taking part in the bidding of hosting venues by August 26, 2013.

In a very short time after that date, not later than September 12, 2013, Bulgaria Football Association should submit the required documents at UEFA headquarters.

The next European Championship will be staged by France in 2016 and will feature 24 qualifiers, up from 16 in 2012.

UEFA EURO 2020 National Bid – abold supports the City of Munich and Allianz Arena in their bidding

19. August 2013

3ccdfd4556.png

In May 2013 Michel Platini, President of the UEFA, expressed that “the EURO 2020 will never have better lived up to its name, it will be decidedly continental and profoundly European. The EURO of unity and shared experience…with one single language: football”.

Football - a language that Munich, the Allianz Arena and abold, the Munich based bidding agency, speak very well. Therefore it was more than obvious that those three joined forces to compile in the months of June and July a convincing bid book for the DFB national selection procedure.

City representatives delivered content and requested guarantees, while the Allianz Arena representatives provided all information regarding the stadium. Abold managed the project, designed and produced the bid book in time.

Based on this document the DFB executive board will decide on August 30th with which of the two bidders, the City of Munich with the Allianz Arena or the City of Berlin with the Olympic Stadium, it will enter the race for one of the thirteen UEFA EURO packages the UEFA has to distribute.

DFB announces Munich as Germany's Euro 2020 candidate

0,,15812400_303,00.jpg

The German Football Association has selected Munich as Germany's candidate host city for matches of the 2020 European Championship. Munich beat out Berlin as Germany's nominee for the pan-European tournament.

Friday's announcement came from the German Football Association (DFB) headquarters in Frankfurt.

"It wasn't an easy decision for us because we had two strong candidates in Munich and Berlin that have already proved they can handle big events," said DFB President Wolfgang Niersbach. "We're sure that we have a good chance for a part of the Euro 2020 with Munich as a host city."

Normally, European Championships are held in multiple cities in one or a pair of host countries (such as Poland and Ukraine in 2012, Austria and Switzerland in 2008, or Portugal in 2004).

To mark what will be the 60th anniversary of the European Championship tournament in 2020, the governing body of European football (UEFA) decided to hold Euro 2020 across the entire continent, with matches in 13 cities in 13 different European countries.

The final selection of the 13 cities will take place in September 2014. In Munich, games would take place at Allianz Arena, the home of Bundesliga club Bayern Munich.

In 2012, Allianz Arena hosted the final of the Champions League. One semi-final of the 2006 World Cup was also held there. Some matches of the Euro 1988 and the final of the 1974 World Cup (won by West Germany) were also held in Munich, but at the city's Olympic Stadium. Allianz Arena was completed in 2005.

If Munich is selected to take part in the Euro 2020, it can bid for two packages. The first would involve three group stage matches and one match from the quarter-finals or the round of 16. The other option would be to host the semi-finals and the final. The second contingent is seen to be dependent on whether Istanbul receives its bid for the 2020 Olympics. Observers believe UEFA would give the Turkish city the final and semi-finals if Istanbul misses out on the Olympics.

Czech FA approve plan to build a Euro 2020 bid

Published on Wednesday, 04 September 2013 11:44
September 4 - The Czech FA (FAČR) has approved a plan to bid to be one of the 13 tournament hosts of the 2020 European Championships and will be submitting an application to UEFA prior to the September 12 deadline.
For the Czech bid to succeed, a new stadium will be required, and it was built into the bidding protocol that work on any new stadium must be started by 2016.
The Czechs are planning on building a new stadium in Prague, probably at Strahov on the site of an old stadium currently used mainly for training and rock concerts.
The minimum capacity of stadiums for Euro 2020 is 50,000, but built into the bidding criteria is the ability of UEFA to allow two exemptions for stadiums of 30,000 capacity which may bid to host bundles of two group matches and a round of 16 match.
It is one of these exemptions that the Czechs will be bidding for, according to the FAČR spokesperson Jaroslav Kolar.
FAČR secretary general Rudolf Repka said there was plenty of time to finalise the details of the new stadium before the deadline for detailed bids of 25 April 2014.
Slavia Prague's 21,000 capacity Eden Stadium hosted the European Super Cup match between Bayern Munich and Chelsea last Friday. UEFA praised the Czech hosts for their organisation of the game.
UEFA president Michel Platini has highlighted one of the benefits of the multi-hosting arrangement for 2020 as being the opportunity for smaller nations to host European Championship games and has committed to taking the major UEFA competitions to more nations who might not normally experience these events.
UEFA makes its final decision on hosts in September 2014.

Municg was Germany's right choice :D not that I don't like berlin, but I prefer stadiums without track. Prague... Europe most beautiful city, I only hope they plan to build a 50,000 stadium, to host Europa League finals after that.

2020 bids on Dubrovnik agenda

Confirmation of the UEFA EURO 2020 bid candidates is a key item on the agenda for the next meeting of the UEFA Executive Committee at the Hotel Dubrovnik Palace in Croatia on the afternoon of Thursday 19 September and the morning of Friday 20 September 2013.
UEFA's Executive Committee, chaired by UEFA President Michel Platini, decided in Lausanne, Switzerland, in December 2012 to stage a "EURO for Europe" in 2020, rather than a tournament in one or two host countries. Then, in January this year, the committee decided that the UEFA EURO 2020 final round will be staged in 13 cities around Europe.
The staging of UEFA EURO 2020 across Europe promises to provide a memorable football festival throughout the continent – and give some countries and cities the potential opportunity to be part of a tournament they may otherwise not be able to host. Submission of bid dossiers and start of the evaluation phase follows in spring 2014, and the UEFA Executive Committee is set to appoint the host cities in September 2014.

Hungary will pitch Budapest to host the 2020 European football championship, which will be held for the first time in 13 different countries, the country's football association (MLSZ) said Tuesday.

"The MLSZ has agreed with the government to bid for hosting rights at Euro 2020," association president Sandor Csanyi told a joint press conference with Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Michel Platini, president of football's European governing body UEFA.

Ahead of the September 12 deadline for confirming bids to UEFA, Csanyi said a new 65,000-seat national stadium in Budapest, due to be completed by 2017, would be presented as a potential venue.

He did not say if Budapest would bid to host group matches, or the semi-finals and final: two possible options for candidate cities.

Russia bids to host Euro 2020 matches

St. Petersburg formally placed a bid to participate in hosting the Euro 2020 four matches, the Russian Football Union said Thursday.

If the bid is approved, Russian's second-largest city will become one of 13 venues among which the tournament will be shared.

For the first time ever, Euro 2020 will be held in various cities across Europe as proposed by UEFA President Michel Platini.

One country will host the semifinals and final, while 12 others will host group games and knockout matches. St. Petersburg, if approved, will host three grouping and one quarterfinal games.

St. Petersburg's 69,000-seat Zenit stadium currently under construction hosts a semifinal at the 2018 World Cup. The arena is to be completed in 2015, seven years behind the schedule.

Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko said Russia has a full right to place its bid because 2020 will mark the 60th anniversary of the first Euro Cup won by the Soviet Union.

FIFA President Sepp Blatter insisted Tuesday that hosting the 2018 World Cup would be an advantage for Russian bid because it guarantees that all necessary infrastructure for Euro 2020 was ready.

The list of bids will be considered on Sept. 19-20 at the UEFA meeting in Croatia and the final choice is to be made in September 2014.

Azerbaijan joins the race for Euros 2020 hosting with new Baku venue

September 12 – Azerbaijan have added their name to the list of European nations bidding to host matches at the Euro 2020 tournament, putting forward Baku and the new Olympic stadium currently under construction as their venue.

Publicly supported by state president Ilham Aliyev, the Association of Football federations of Azerbaijan (AFFA) submitted their official application yesterday, building on what has been a growing appetite in this emerging country to showcase itself through sports.

Last year Azerbaijan hosted the 2012 FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup, breaking records for the biggest crowds for this level of tournament. In 2016 Azerbaijan will host the UEFA Under-17 Championships. In July of this year the country hosted the 16-team Military World Cup.

Azerbaijan has also contributed sponsors to the confederation with the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) having become the seventh official sponsor of UEFA's national team competitions, including the UEFA European Football Championships, earlier this year.

SOCAR is one of the world's largest oil companies and ranked the 68th largest company in the world with a valuation of $20 billion. As part of the agreement SOCAR will be included in the commercial programme for this summer's UEFA European Under-21 Championship and UEFA Women's EURO 2013 final tournaments.

The Baku Olympic stadium, currently under construction and due for completion in 2015, will have a capacity of 68 000. Construction works began with a ground-breaking ceremony attended by Azerbaijan's president Aliyev and FIFA and UEFA presidents Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini.

The stadium will be used during first European Games to be hosted in Azerbaijan in 2015. The stadium complex is part of a wider development of the surrounding area (to include new hotels and parking).

DUBROVNIK, Croatia (AP) Turkey believes it is "top of the list" to host the 2020 European Championship final, after Istanbul lost the 2020 Olympics race.

UEFA President Michel Platini pledged his conditional support in January for Istanbul getting the elite final and semifinals hosting package, Emre Alkin, the Turkish Football Federation general secretary, told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

"We are on the top of the list, without doubt," said Alkin, who expects "three or four, including Turkey" of UEFA's 54 member countries to compete for the final package.

"Spain is ready but reluctant to bid. Germany says, 'If you are very positive, I won't bid. Not to break your heart,'" the Turkish official said on the sidelines of a four-day summit of UEFA stakeholders.

The Hungarian federation announced at a news conference with Platini last week that it could stage the final in a renovated national stadium in Budapest planned to hold 65,000 fans.

"Hungary likes to have it. Why not? They have the ability and the capacity. But in seven years? It's too much money," Alkin said.
