gotosy Posted March 14, 2013 Author Report Share Posted March 14, 2013 Blatter: Euro 2020 lacks heart and soul FIFA president Sepp Blatter has hit out at UEFA's initiative to organize Euro 2020 in 13 different cities across Europe rather than in one country.The 2020 championships will be held in multiple nations all over Europe to mark 60 years of the tournament's existence, a decision that has received its fair share of criticism over the past few months. Blatter has joined in, saying that he is one of the people that would prefer the tournament to be held in one country."I once told Michel Platini that Colonel Gaddafi presented a similar plan when he was bidding for the 2010 World Cup. He really believes in this idea, but I said it was out of the question. So Platini's idea is nothing new," Blatter told Kicker."A tournament should be played in just one country, that creates a certain identity and euphoria. Just look at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. It will not really be a European championship in the new format. You'll have to look at it in another way, although I don't know how exactly. As if Qatar is such a brilliant idea! True. Please don't think i'm defending the man for a second, but I'm sure I read somewhere that Blatter didn't really want Qatar to win - I think he was more or less behind the US bid. Whilst Euro 2020 seems to be the brainchild of one man, Platini, I get the impression Qatar 2022 is more the result of a messy and corrupt FIFA ExCo rather than Blatter's desire. Munich beat out Berlin as Germany's nominee for the pan-European tournament. Friday's announcement came from the German Football Association (DFB) headquarters in Frankfurt. "It wasn't an easy decision for us because we had two strong candidates in Munich and Berlin that have already proved they can handle big events," said DFB President Wolfgang Niersbach. "We're sure that we have a good chance for a part of the Euro 2020 with Munich as a host city." Normally, European Championships are held in multiple cities in one or a pair of host countries (such as Poland and Ukraine in 2012, Austria and Switzerland in 2008, or Portugal in 2004). To mark what will be the 60th anniversary of the European Championship tournament in 2020, the governing body of European football (UEFA) decided to hold Euro 2020 across the entire continent, with matches in 13 cities in 13 different European countries. The final selection of the 13 cities will take place in September 2014. In Munich, games would take place at Allianz Arena, the home of Bundesliga club Bayern Munich. In 2012, Allianz Arena hosted the final of the Champions League. One semi-final of the 2006 World Cup was also held there. Some matches of the Euro 1988 and the final of the 1974 World Cup (won by West Germany) were also held in Munich, but at the city's Olympic Stadium. Allianz Arena was completed in 2005. If Munich is selected to take part in the Euro 2020, it can bid for two packages. The first would involve three group stage matches and one match from the quarter-finals or the round of 16. The other option would be to host the semi-finals and the final. The second contingent is seen to be dependent on whether Istanbul receives its bid for the 2020 Olympics. For the Czech bid to succeed, a new stadium will be required, and it was built into the bidding protocol that work on any new stadium must be started by 2016. The Czechs are planning on building a new stadium in Prague, probably at Strahov on the site of an old stadium currently used mainly for training and rock concerts. The minimum capacity of stadiums for Euro 2020 is 50,000, but built into the bidding criteria is the ability of UEFA to allow two exemptions for stadiums of 30,000 capacity which may bid to host bundles of two group matches and a round of 16 match. It is one of these exemptions that the Czechs will be bidding for, according to the FAČR spokesperson Jaroslav Kolar. FAČR secretary general Rudolf Repka said there was plenty of time to finalise the details of the new stadium before the deadline for detailed bids of 25 April 2014. Slavia Prague's 21,000 capacity Eden Stadium hosted the European Super Cup match between Bayern Munich and Chelsea last Friday. UEFA praised the Czech hosts for their organisation of the game. UEFA president Michel Platini has highlighted one of the benefits of the multi-hosting arrangement for 2020 as being the opportunity for smaller nations to host European Championship games and has committed to taking the major UEFA competitions to more nations who might not normally experience these events. "The MLSZ has agreed with the government to bid for hosting rights at Euro 2020," association president Sandor Csanyi told a joint press conference with Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Michel Platini, president of football's European governing body UEFA. Ahead of the September 12 deadline for confirming bids to UEFA, Csanyi said a new 65,000-seat national stadium in Budapest, due to be completed by 2017, would be presented as a potential venue. The remaining quarter of the stadium will be built on land that was occupied by the old San Mamés, which was demolished this summer. It will be completed in Spring 2015: The Nou Mestalla in Valencia (75,100), construction began in 2007 and was expected to be inaugurated in 2009, but the works were postponed due to financial problems: La Peineta in Madrid (70,000) won't have a running track now that it won't be hosting the Olympics. Publicly supported by state president Ilham Aliyev, the Association of Football federations of Azerbaijan (AFFA) submitted their official application yesterday, building on what has been a growing appetite in this emerging country to showcase itself through sports. Last year Azerbaijan hosted the 2012 FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup, breaking records for the biggest crowds for this level of tournament. In 2016 Azerbaijan will host the UEFA Under-17 Championships. In July of this year the country hosted the 16-team Military World Cup. Azerbaijan has also contributed sponsors to the confederation with the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) having become the seventh official sponsor of UEFA's national team competitions, including the UEFA European Football Championships, earlier this year. SOCAR is one of the world's largest oil companies and ranked the 68th largest company in the world with a valuation of $20 billion. As part of the agreement SOCAR will be included in the commercial programme for this summer's UEFA European Under-21 Championship and UEFA Women's EURO 2013 final tournaments. The Baku Olympic stadium, currently under construction and due for completion in 2015, will have a capacity of 68 000. Construction works began with a ground-breaking ceremony attended by Azerbaijan's president Aliyev and FIFA and UEFA presidents Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini. UEFA President Michel Platini pledged his conditional support in January for Istanbul getting the elite final and semifinals hosting package, Emre Alkin, the Turkish Football Federation general secretary, told The Associated Press on Wednesday. "We are on the top of the list, without doubt," said Alkin, who expects "three or four, including Turkey" of UEFA's 54 member countries to compete for the final package. "Spain is ready but reluctant to bid. Germany says, 'If you are very positive, I won't bid. Not to break your heart,'" the Turkish official said on the sidelines of a four-day summit of UEFA stakeholders. The Hungarian federation announced at a news conference with Platini last week that it could stage the final in a renovated national stadium in Budapest planned to hold 65,000 fans.
