You can't compare Toronto to a winter games in Vancouver. Toronto is two time zones away, would offer a "safe host", an economy that is in much better shape then current frontrunners Tokyo, and a very compact plan which would be hard to refuse for the third time. If Rome wasn't bidding from the get go and Toronto's huge surplus in its budget came earlier I truly believe Toronto would have bid, and potentially would have been a frontrunner.

Disagree. Most recently concluded Games: Canada. 2016 host: Americas. Toronto would not have won 2020.

Most recently concluded games in 2013, will be the 2012 Games not Vancouver 2010. Well 2016 you might have a point, but Rio is in SA and Toronto is in NA.

Although many things would have been against a Toronto win, all the other bids have things against them as well, that if Toronto bid it would have been such a wide open race that any city (minus Doha) could have won.

what football federation didint expect is being the only candidate for euro 2020. if there is another bid in the race, safely government back olympics and then 2 possiblities

1- istanbul wins uefa choose another country

2- istanbul looses uefa award the champ to turkey. everybody gets happy

we need another candidate asap :S

But thats very unlikely. Who will bid? Turkey should've realized this was a distinct possibility.

IMO, it was quite predictable. There were four good alternative possibilities:

- England did not seem to be interested at all.

- Germany said they would only bid if Turkey wouldn't.

- After the end of Rome's Olympic bid another Italian bid for a huge sports event seemed unlikely.

- Spain is in the 2020 Olympic race.

EXACTLY. They should've seen this a mile away. They should've at least considered the possibility.

russia ? :D

or scandinavia or even albania is welcome :D

cross fingers till 15th of may :/

I wouldn't hold my breath. Russia has the 2018 WC. Sweden and Norway pulled their 2016 bid and have shown no interest. Albania is getting desperate. This was totally foreseeable.

Albania? Where did Albania come from? Russia could conceivably host given that South Africa will host the African Cup of Nations three years after the WC (granted they are in different confederations). However for Russia to win they would have to be the only bid, or the other bids are not good enough.

I think he was grasping at straws.

Even though these countries having shown an indication to bid they all could if UEFA asked them to.

  • England (last held 1996)
  • Italy (last held 1980)
  • Germany (last held 1988 as West Germany)
  • Spain (last held 1964)

They already have the stadiums and infrastructure in place so it could occur with minimal cost.

In addition Belgium has not officially dropped their interest in bidding - their proposal was likely to involve a variation of the 7 stadia they suggested for their joint bid with the Netherlands for 2018 plus 2 more

Well, Turkey would have to bow out in order for UEFA to go begging. I think that would be a grave mistake that would reflect extremely poorly on the Turks.

Sounds like they've painted themselves into a corner on this - damned if they do, damned if they don't.

Seems like another example of an event setting hosting standards that could leave them with very few viable hosts. I think, as with the Olympics (especially Winter) and Commonwealth Games they need to have a look at their criteria and ask themselves if it is sustainable in the long term. After all, UEFA only has so many members with the ability, let alone the inclination to host something of this scale.
