It's a modern representation of the simplest of torches, a bundle of reeds.22 reeds to represent the past Olympics, with Georgia hardwood handle. Gold binds the reeds together with the names of all 22 past Olympic hosts. It's a great torch indeed! The commemorative centennial torch the Greeks did comes nothing close to the one we got at Atlanta. They should have gone ahead with their proposed global torch relay however.Barcelona? Seriously? It's a clever representation for such an industrial based city (which at the time was transitioning towards a tourist based one). It's also a great torch.London 2012 is just awful bling.

I thought Vancouver was a Bombardier job and Sydney was from Blue Sky Design. Either way, both nice torches. I actually really liked Barcelona, the only one of late that I can't get in to would be the Sochi torch. Nice concept but not great in design application. Loving this Rio torch though.

For me the main problem with Atlanta's torch was that handle, which, though elegant in itself, wrecked the impression of a bundle of reeds (also, I'd quite have liked to see the reeds rendered in that elegant dark green colour they used as the background for Atlanta's logo). Having said that, they wouldn't have wanted to come much closer to a torch looking like a bundle of lictors' scourging rods.

I agree with JMarkSnow2012, the handle is really weird in the torch. I know this torch have a lot of meanings in details, but this dont was the most creative way of show these meanings. Just when I Look to torch see a strange design without symmetry and harmony. That's only my opinion.

The ambition and concept for the Atlanta torch was great -- after all, it was for the Centennial of the Games -- even though celebrating 22 items was a bit much of a stretch for a supposedly compact item. In a glass case, it looks good, but you are right about the placement of the handle. And that's always bothered me as well. But you can't have everything in a torch. Yeah, Sydney's had motion, symbolism and dynamism. This new one of Rio has design and ingenuity, altho I think - sea, sky and sand would've worked equally well. No need for 5 elements.

I find kind of fool carrying a batton with a message within running over places as it were the flame.... Commonwealth batton, I reffer to, of course.... The emotion is in the flame itself and its meaning... But the batton.... mmmmm ... nobody even see where the message is....
TorchbearerSydney Posted July 6, 2015 Report Posted July 6, 2015 Agreed....The Commonwealth Baton relay is a joke, it seems to generate zero excitement compared to the Olympic Flame. I am proud to have carried the Sydney Olympic Torch, not sure I would say the same about the Gold Coast Baton!

Different strokes for different folks, Nacho. It is very un-sexy...but it is what it is. You don't have to go out and cheer if it comes your way.
Victor Mata Posted July 6, 2015 Report Posted July 6, 2015 The coolest aspect of the baton is that it is an unique artifact and they can experiment lots of materials and gadgets inside it as there's no need for pipes and burners. But when designers try to make it look like an unlit torch that's when things get pointless.

Faves Salt lake Lillehammer Atlanta Mexico City The torch of Rio is plastic and matte because the main attraction of the torch are the colorful details and sparkles that appear when the torch is lit. I think the Mexico City torch was really inovative in their time.
