Now, So. Korea has to find a 105-year old person now, train him/her, so that that centenarian will be at least be 107 by 2018 and therefore beat this record of Rio 2016. (Although Japan, of course, holds the title of having the record of most centenarians of any country alive, per capita. So they may supersede this 2016 record for Tokyo 2020/ ) This old lady beats Hal Haig Prieste (USA) who carried the torch in Atlanta. He was the oldest living torch-carrier as of 1996 at age 99. Prieste competed in Diving at Antwerp in 1920, and won a team bronze. In 2000, at age 103, Prieste was flown to Sydney to present an original 1920 Olympic flag that he had swiped in Antwerp but now returned to the IOC. He died in April 2001, at the age of 104. Prieste thus holds the record of being the first known Olympian whose lifespan covered three centuries (the 19th, 20th and 21st—1896 - 2001). Edited June 18, 2016 by baron-pierreIV Quote

Amazon jaguar shot dead at Olympic torch ceremonyA jaguar featured at an Olympic torch ceremony was shot dead by a soldier shortly after the event in the Brazilian Amazon city of Manaus as the animal escaped from its handlers, an army statement said. The jaguar was killed Monday at a zoo attached to a military training center, when a soldier fired a single pistol shot after the animal, despite being tranquilized, approached the soldier, the army said. “We made a mistake in permitting the Olympic torch, a symbol of peace and unity, to be exhibited alongside a chained wild animal. This image goes against our beliefs and our values,” the local organizing committee Rio 2016 said in a statement, adding "We guarantee that there will be no more such incidents at Rio 2016.” A smiling yellow jaguar known as Ginga is the mascot of the Brazilian Olympic team. The shooting caused uproar among animal rights groups, which questioned why the animal was involved in the Olympic event. "When will people (and institutions) stop with this sick need to show power and control by confining, taming and showcasing wild animals?" the Rio de Janeiro-based animal rights group Animal Freedom Union said on its Facebook page. The jaguar is a nearly threatened species that has already been wiped out in Uruguay and El Salvador, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The use of Juma, as the jaguar was known, at the event was illegal, according to Ipaam, the Amazonas state government environmental authority that oversees the use of wild animals. "No request was made to authorize the participation of the jaguar "Juma" in the event of the Olympic torch," Ipaam said in a statement. Ipaam said it is investigating the incident. http://www.reuters.com/article/us-olympics-rio-jaguar-idUSKCN0Z72P4?feedType=RSS&feedName=topNews&utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=Social Quote

It's really a shame what happened but the torch relay is a circus everywhere. Going to outerspace, underwater, meeting indigenous people. Brazil is not different. Quote
paul Posted June 22, 2016 Report Posted June 22, 2016 ewwwwww that's the creepiest looking dolphin i've ever seen. ......and that was a beautiful jaguar, that's about the stupidest thing that could possibly happen. I'm sure the organizing committee though it was a great idea!! Quote
baron-pierreIV Posted June 22, 2016 Report Posted June 22, 2016 Sad; what a waste. But oops, they'll have to scrap the jaguar number now in the OC. Quickly, they have about 40 days to create a new fauna number! 1 Quote

"Is a circus everywhere"....you are probably rigth, but some circus know how to make a great show without killing animals... Rio 2016 is already a circus and I hope the OC and the athletes could help me to change this idea. And going back to the torch relay: Sometimes, less is more. 2 Quote

This year torch-relay it´s a kind of circus!!! London 2012 I really miss you!!! I agree with you.
