ATHENS, Greece (AP) — A group of refugee athletes will march together in the opening ceremony of the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in a symbol of hope for the world's migrants, IOC President Thomas Bach said Thursday.

On a three-day visit to Greece, Bach also said a refugee would carry the torch during the Greek leg of the flame relay and that the route would include a stop at an Athens refugee camp. The flame lighting ceremony at Ancient Olympia will take place on April 21.

"We want to turn the attention of the world to the fate and the problems of the 60 million refugees in our world and their suffering," Bach said.

Rio 2016 sign deal with car rental company to provide vehicles for Torch Relays

Car rental company Localiza is to supply vehicles for the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Torch Relay, it has been announced.

The South American firm, founded in 1973 in Belo Horizonte, will provide a fleet of around 165 cars for use throughout the Olympic Torch Relay.

The Olymic Torch is set to be handed over to Brazilian officials on April 27, one week after its lighting in Ancient Olympia, before beginning a 95-day journey criss-crossing around Brazil on May 3.

As is traditional, the Torch will be lit in a special ceremony at the historic home of the Ancient Games in the Temple of Hera in the Greek town.

After a week travelling around Greece, it is due to be handed over to Rio 2016 organisers with a special ceremony at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, the arena used at the first Modern Olympic Games in 1896.

It will then travel straight to Brazil before officially beginning its journey in the capital Brasilia before the Olympic Cauldron is lit at the Opening Ceremony of the Games in the Maracanã Stadium, on August 5.

A total of 12,000 bearers are set to participate in a journey visiting 83 cities including the 26 state capitals.

It is estimated that the Torch's journey will embrace 90 per cent of the population, with the full itinerary expected to be unveiled in January.

The Paralympic Torch Relay is set to take place between September 1 and 7 ahead of the Games.

São Paulo set to be the first of five cities to welcome the event on September 1.

The Relay will then head to Joinville in the south, Natal in the north-east and Belém in the north before visiting Brasília on September 5.

Rio 2016 state the decision to pass through the cities, one per day, will allow each of the five regions of Brazil to be represented, with a regional flame set to be lit at every venue.

Localiza's fleet will comprise a range of Nissan models, including March, Sentra, Versa and Frontier.

Nissan is a Top Tier partner of Rio 2016 and will remain the sole supplier of cars to the event itself.

Localiza claims to operate 557 service points in major cities and airports across eight South American countries, with its hire fleet totalling more than 117,000 vehicles.

Rio 2016 has revealed the complete route of the Olympic Torch Relay that will begin on 3 May and spread the spirit of the Games around Brazil. At a celebratory event alongside the organising committee's headquarters on Wednesday (24 February) morning, the first torchbearers and the uniform they will wear was also revealed.

The relay will visit 329 towns and cities across all five regions of Brazil, travelling 20,000 kilometres by road and 10,000 miles by air, and reaching 90 per cent of the country’s population. About 12,000 torchbearers will carry the Olympic flame during the 95-day relay, that will be concluded during the opening ceremony at the Maracanã Stadium on 5 August, when the Olympic cauldron will be lit.

As well as the relay sections of the event in towns and cities, the torch will also be taken to some of the nation’s most stunning beauty spots, such as Fernando de Noronha and the Iguaçu Falls.

According to ancient tradition, the Olympic flame will be lit at a ceremony in the Greek city of Olympia on 21 April and will complete a short relay of Greece before being passed over to Rio 2016. With the announcement of the full Brazilian route, another 246 towns and cities have been confirmed alongside the 83 revealed when the torch was unveiled last July.

The public will be encouraged to come out onto the streets and engage with the torch relay through a digital campaign using the hashtag #ChamaGeral, which can be translated to #CallEveryone in English, although the Portuguese phrase features a pun, as ‘chama’ means both call and flame.

“By taking the Olympic flame to the whole country, we will be keeping our promise to give millions of people the chance to participate in a celebration that will stay in their memories for a long time,” said Rio 2016 President Carlos Arthur Nuzman. “We want to see the pride of people in the streets, show our cultural diversity and our nature. We will reveal to the world the essence of our country.”

The relay will begin in the capital city Brasília, which was designed by Oscar Niemeyer in the shape of an aeroplane, before spreading out into the Centre-West region and visiting some important points along the route in the state of Goiás, such as Pirenópolis, a historic town surrounded by waterfalls. Vila Propício, home to a number of caves, including Gruta Azul, lies around 70km away. The region’s attractions include ecotourism.

Caldas Novas and neighbouring Rio Quente form the largest thermal springs resort in the world, where more than six million litres of 37.5° water flows per hour.

Campo Grande and Cuiabá, the state capitals of Mato Grosso do Sul and Mato Grosso, are the gateways to the vast Pantanal wetland, which is home to distinctive fauna and flora. This area is a paradise for fishers, birdwatchers and photographers. Less than 100km from Cuiabá lies the Chapada Diamantina park, which has many trails to be explored.

The relay will then enter Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo, in the Southeast region, passing through historic towns and beaches, and then on to the North East, which has some of the best known tourist attractions in Brazil.

After going to Salvador, in the North East state of Bahia, the relay will pass through the Lençóis Maranhenses sand dunes in Maranhão and the mysterious Sete Cidades (Seven Cities) of neighbouring Piauí, whose rock art and extraordinary rock formations have inspired legends related to UFOs. The torch relay will then proceed through rural areas that are home to their own traditional arts and rhythms, as well as stunning beaches along the coast of Bahia, Pernambuco, Sergipe, Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte.

In 1881, the idea was proposed to build a theatre in the middle of the jungle, in Manaus, and in 1896 the luxurious Teatro Amazonas was opened, alongside the Amazon, the most voluminous river in the world, which extends for nearly 7,000km and has more than 1,000 tributaries. Until this day, history and nature are among the attractions of Brazil’s North region. In Belém, tourist sights include the Ver-o-Peso market and the Mangal das Garças ecological park.

From the North region, the relay will return through the Centre-West on its way to the South East, entering São Paulo, and then on to the South region, which also has strong traditions and is home to the beach city of Florianópolis.

The South also has mountains and milder wine-growing areas, including Bento Gonçalves in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The same state contains the 17th century Jesuit ruins of São Miguel das Missões. Paraná features the stunning, rainbow-rich Iguaçu Falls.

The last stage of the torch relay will return from the South region to the South East, entering the rich farmlands of São Paulo state, home to centuries-old coffee plantations, before going to the state capital – one of the world’s largest and most cosmopolitan cities, famous for its restaurants and culture.

The relay will then pass along the north coast of São Paulo, taking in some of the country’s most beautiful beaches, before travelling through mountains and descending into the state of Rio de Janeiro. It will go through the Baixada Fluminense region and then arrive in the Games host city, the Cidade Maravilhosa, which will have its own internal relay until the cauldron is lit at the Olympic Games opening ceremony on 5 August.

Rio 2016 Olympic mascot Vinicius was the first to model the torchbearers uniform, showing off his samba skills in front of the gathered crowds and media. Brazilian judoka Érika Miranda, who was selected by Rio 2016 to be a torchbearer, also donned the white, yellow and green outfit, alongside others who have been invited to carry the torch by the relay partners Coca-Cola, Nissan and Bradesco.

The theme song of the torch relay was also revealed: A Vida do Viajante (The Life of a Traveller) by Luiz Gonzaga, while the celebration featured various styles of Brazilian music. The musical side of the event was organised by Carla Camurati, director Celebra, the Rio 2016 culture programme.

A long time ago I made a list of the most incredible places in Brazil where the olympic torch should pass [THIS PAGE], and some users mocked about me ...

/\ A lot of those are too far out and remote to have any 'in-the-moment' significance. Aside from providing 'photo opps,' there is very little 'marketing' value to take the Torch Relay to such remote spots. Remember, the point of a Torch Relay...and which is why the IOC allows the sponsors to attach their names openly to the Relay is to get the populace excited for the upcoming Games -- which is why they run it in the cities and towns...where there are people -- NOT in the remote jungles where you only have the birds, the snakes and the crocs to see it -- and where Coke and Samsung and whatever Brazilian bank is a co-sponsor will waste their money.

Remember, there are at least 2 dozen vehicles and maybe 20-30 people in the support caravan; not counting the press who cover each leg. You don't want such a rowdy party disturbing areas which should remain pristine. Not to mention that you have to pre-position the runners (maybe every 500 yards each or whatever) -- so you have to bring all those people to those remote areas to create a "chain run" and then return the runners to where they came from.

The Relay will be pretty much planned around population centers -- and a few remote, historic spots to create some sort of 'first-time-here' records. Creating and running an efficient Olympic torch relay is NOT for the feint of heart. It is very complicated and planners put in 24-hour days to get the run right.

Olympic Flame ceremonies to contain some of Greece's shine

The Hellenic Olympic Committee presented on Tuesday the details of the Lighting and Handover Ceremonies of the Olympic Flame for Rio 2016, stressing that on this anniversary of 80 years since the first lighting of the Olympic Flame in 1936 as many Greeks as possible ought to honor it with their presence and participation in the torch relay and the Handover Ceremony.

The Olympic Flame for the Rio Games will be lit at Ancient Olympia on April 21. After a six-day relay around Greece it will be handed over to the Organizing Committee of the Rio Games on April 27 at the Panathenaic Stadium of Athens.

In the presentation that took place at the stadium, an Olympic symbol, the President of the Hellenic Olympic Committee Spyros Kapralos said that “besides the timeless significance this Flame Lighting has for our country, it coincides with the 80-year anniversary since the first time the Flame was lit at the sacred land of Ancient Olympia, to light up the Modern Olympic Games.

“The shine of the Olympic Flame also contains some of the shine of Greece,” he said, adding that “the Lighting of the Flame links the ancient and modern civilizations and presents to every generation the ideals and values that were born in Ancient Greece and then travelled across the whole world, giving physical substance to the meanings of culture and peace.”

Kapralos also stated that the HOC, in association with the United Nations and the International Olympic Committee, has already selected the person who will represent refugees in the Olympic Torch Relay at Elaionas, western Athens. He said that although he cannot release the name, the participant will be a Syrian refugee who has claimed asylum in Greece.

The two ceremonies will feature dancers wearing outfits featuring a novel but also classical design courtesy of British-born Greek Cypriot Eleni Kyriacou. They will be choreographed by Artemis Ignatiou. Katerina Lechou will again be the High Priestess who lights the cauldron. Fotis Kaymenakis will act as the coordinator and director of both ceremonies.

Greek pop music superstar Sakis Rouvas will headline the Handover Ceremony, as he leads the Ellada Boris (i.e. “Greece You Can”) campaign to assist the Greek Olympic squad. The singer called on Greeks to deliver “a message of peace, noble competition, passion, optimism and pride.”

ATHENS, April 8 (Reuters) - Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff has cancelled plans to attend the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympics torch lighting ceremony in Greece's Olympia later this month, Greece's Olympic Committee (HOC) said on Friday.

The ceremony at the birthplace of the Olympic Games in ancient Greece traditionally marks the countdown to the world's biggest multi-sports event with a torch lighting ceremony and the start of a torch relay.

"The President of Brazil Dilma Rousseff has cancelled her presence at the event according to information provided to the Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC) by the embassy of Brazil," the HOC said in a statement.

World champion gymnast Eleftherios Petrounias of Greece has been chosen as the first Torchbearer for the Relay ahead of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

The 25-year-old will receive the flame from Greek actress Katarina Lehou, in her role as High Priestess of the Goddess Hera, at the stadium in Ancient Olympia on April 21.

Petrounias is the first from his sport to start an Olympic Torch Relay, but in 2008, fellow gymnast Li Ning of China, a three-time Olympic gold medallist, lit the cauldron in spectacular fashion to launch the Beijing 2008 Games.

The Greek star, who won gold in the rings at the 2015 World Championship in Glasgow and at the inaugural European Games in Baku last year, is set to make his own Olympic debut in Rio.

He will come into this summer's event in the Brazilian city as one of the favourites for Olympic gold in his preferred rings discipline.

As tradition dictates, Petrounias will take pause briefly with the flame at the monument in salute to Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the Frenchman who revived the Olympics and is considered the father of the modern Games.

Petrounias will hand the flame to two-time Olympic champion and four-time volleyball Olympian Giovane Gávio, the first Brazilian in the 2016 Torch Relay.
