Ozkar
Â Is just me or the roof looks unfinished with that glass panel only covering an area of the roof...
yoshi
I don’t know about unfinished but it certainly looks very very odd. I wonder why that area is there - could it be used for anything special in the ceremonies? Could the cauldron go on top of it?
Rob2012
^^ A glass roof encircles the open part of the dome and here there are solar panels. The solar panels will be fixed in a way that the audience can see them when looking up from their seats. This is very deliberate. We were looking to make this environmental technology very visible as part of the design.

Golan Trevize
Damn, that is one ugly Olympic Stadium, nothing like the initial proposals, the last trully iconic Olympic Stadium was the Birds nest in Beijing in 2008.
Ikarus360
And that's a good thing. The initial proposal was hideous, unrealistic and costly. Good riddance to that and they also managed to save up money by doing this. As for Bird Nest yeah, very iconic stadium....when it's not being abandoned/unused. Which is like 70% of the time. Anywho, new picture. They're testing the illumination now. The greenery around the stadium still has much more to grow but it's getting there. yoshi
I really like the stadium. It’s not flashy, but the combination of wood & greenery is already looking good, Tokyo needs all the plant space it can get, & its simplicity means it looks far more Japanese than Zaha’s bike helmet ever could.
yoshi
Should add that chasing being ‘iconic’ is what’s led the Olympic Movement into the mess it’s in. Far better to have something that works, is most effective & useful for its city, & doesn’t leave the city cursing the Games. Then you can make it look good. Hopefully Tokyo’s experience, then two consecutive existing stadiums, will end this stadium war, & cities can focus on being special in their own way. PS: I actually think that Tokyo’s stadium will be pretty iconic when the greenery is fully grown - & a stadium of planted walls sends a far better message than a mass of steel in today’s world.

Athens was a refurbishment; Beijing was admittedly a declaration of war; London was a minimalist load of seats and some fabric (which Boris Johnson then insisted should become a Premier League stadium, regardless of expense); Rio was another refurbishment (or rather, an urgent fix of serious structural problems). I'd say the real war is in the specialist venues for sports that attract very few spectators outside of the Olympics (which of course means colossal problems for Winter hosts). yoshi
Why the rugby posts? It would be pretty classic if they move the World Cup final last-minute & make that the stadium’s first event

It might not be the spaceship Zaha designed, but it makes up for that in it's elegant design. Really looking forward to these games.
