So Zaha Hadid had to kick the bucket for her Architect firm to make something actually pleasant instead of repeating the same stuff everytime?

Either way I can't help but think they were very inspired by the new Tokyo stadium design.

Anyway, Tokyo stadium has a very good balance. It's not an over the top stadium but its pleasant to the eye and very Japanese due to its minimalism. And it will certainly be a more memorable venue than the Joao Havelange stadium.

Hmmmm. I wonder if it ever will be built in reality.

This looks like a cunning publicity move on the part of Forest Green Rovers' main sponsor, the "green energy" firm Ecotricity. The £5 million or so they've just pumped into the club is nowhere near enough to pay for a new stadium, but easily enough to pay for a design contest.

Sorry, not relevant to Tokyo except in a general "get real about the build cost of fancy stadium designs" way.

Nah, the club is owned by a green energy firm and wants an eco stadium at the centre of an eco-park they're trying to build. The usual concrete and steel stuff Hadid Architects comes out with wouldn't have fitted the bill so they had to think differently in this case. And actually, this design was pretty much done before she died anyway. Look at all the other shortlisted designs and they're all similar - you can see it was the requirements of the club that determined the materials etc.

I just thought it ironic that after the Tokyo debacle, Hadid Architects won a competition to build a wooden stadium!

Anyway, this is a tangent...sorry...

2020 Tokyo Olympic stadium construction starts

The construction of the main stadium for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics has begun, more than a year later than originally planned.

NHK has learned that the Japan Sport Council obtained construction permits from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government on Tuesday, and construction began on Thursday.

A groundbreaking ceremony will be held on December 11th and construction is scheduled to be completed in November, 2019.

Architect Kengo Kuma created a plan for the new stadium.

In July last year, the government scrapped an initial design by a different architect that was criticized for its high projected cost. Under the original plan, construction would have started in October last year.

That stadium design just doesn't excite me.  Yeah, it's nice, and modest and zen-like, but you need to make a statement with an Olympic stadium!!  I think they should hold another round of design selection.

Tokyo breaks ground on new 2020 Olympics National Stadium

800.jpeg

TOKYO (AP) — Tokyo held a groundbreaking ceremony on Sunday for a $1.5 billion National Stadium to host the 2020 Olympic Games.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike and other dignitaries launched the construction at the site of the demolished National Stadium, which was used during the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, by putting their hands on a glass sphere that rotated through pastels of the colors of the Olympic logo.

The ceremony ended with a video replete with computer graphics showing how the stadium is expected to look and function once completed by November 2019.

Work on the stadium in the center of the city fell behind schedule because the government abandoned the original design amid spiraling costs and complaints over its scale and appearance.

Koike, Tokyo's first female governor, took office in July pledging to use her platform to host a cost-efficient and environmentally friendly 2020 Olympics. She has lambasted organizers of the 2020 games for failing to keep costs under control.

An expert panel she appointed put the price tag of the 2020 Games at over $30 billion, barring drastic cost-cutting measures, a more than a four-fold increase from the initial estimate when the city was awarded the games in 2013.

Fans of the old stadium, built in the late 1950s, had lobbied to keep and renovate it. But in the end the government opted to replace it with a more modern facility.

Kengo Kuma, the architect of the new, open-air stadium, chose a wooden lattice design that echoes traditional styles seen in Japanese shrines and pagodas. It is intended to blend in with surrounding parkland and will be structured to minimize costs for heating and cooling.

The structure will use Japanese-grown larch in its wood and steel composite roof and prefabricated panels to help speed the work along and contain costs.

Going by the more environmentally-conscious handling of the Flame in Rio, my guess is that in the OC they will have a small, portable cauldron in the middle of the field.  Like London, they would then transfer that to a higher pole in the middle of Olympic Park.  That way, there can be a central focus in the Park and it can be seen by everyone.

I saw that there may be a possibility that there is a study being conducted as to whether a full roof is technically possible after the Olympics. I don't see this happening but it is interesting...
