SwissO Posted January 11, 2012 Report Posted January 11, 2012 Team USA to compete at 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games starting Jan. 13 The U.S. Olympic Committee today announced the 57-member 2012 U.S. Youth Olympic Team that will compete in the upcoming 1st Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria. The 10-day competition for athletes between the ages of 14 and 19 will commence on Jan. 13 and will feature all 15 sport disciplines on the program for the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. "We are extremely pleased to be sending such a talented group of athletes to represent Team USA at the inaugural Winter Youth Olympic Games," said USOC CEO Scott Blackmun. "This event is a critical asset in expanding the audience of the Olympic Movement and our young athletes will gain sporting experience, culture and education while they participate." 2012 Youth Olympic Games - By the Numbers 1,050+ athletes 63 medal events 60+ nations from all five continents 15 sport disciplines 12 venues 4 cities (Innsbruck, Seefeld, Igls, Kuhtai) 2 past Olympic Games in Innsbruck (1964, 1976) 2012 U.S. Youth Olympic Team - Notes The 2012 U.S. Youth Olympic Team includes 57 athletes (37 males, 20 females). Team USA has 28 athletes who speak a foreign language, including four who speak German (Sean Doherty, Jake Peterson, Nick Proell, Aleksandra Zakrzewska). A total of 22 states are represented on the U.S. roster. Cross-country skier Heather Mooney (Peru, Vt.) is a freshman at Middlebury College. She is the only Team USA athlete who has already graduated high school. Curlers Sarah and Taylor Anderson (Broomall, Pa.) are identical twin sisters. Michael and Rachel Parsons (Rockville, Md.) are a brother/sister ice dancing duo. Hockey player Ryan MacInnis (St. Louis, Mo.) is the son of Hockey Hall of Famer and Olympic champion Al MacInnis. Cross-country skier Patrick Caldwell (Lyme, N.H.) is the son of four-time Olympic cross-country skier Tim Caldwell, who competed in the Innsbruck 1976 Olympic Winter Games. Hockey player Shane Gersich (Chaska, Minn.) is the nephew of Neal Broten, a member of the 1980 'Miracle on Ice' Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team. Bobsledder Jake Peterson (Zimmerman, Minn.) is the son of 1994 U.S. Olympic Bobsled Team coach Darin Peterson. "The Youth Olympic Games are a great way to develop some of our top up-and-coming athletes," said Todd English, Chef de Mission for Team USA. "Our athletes will gain invaluable experience and the competition will serve as a building block for the future success of Team USA on the international stage." Following the inaugural summer edition of the Youth Olympic Games that took place in Singapore in 2010, the first-ever Winter YOG will also include innovative events that are not on the Olympic program. Among the non-Olympic events will be a skills challenge for ice hockey; a mass-start event for speedskating; and mixed gender and/or mixed country team events for alpine skiing, biathlon, curling, luge, figure skating, short-track speedskating, ski jumping and a combination of cross-country skiing and biathlon.
