Raikkonen re-signs with Lotus for 2013

Kimi Raikkonen has re-signed for Lotus, the team confirmed in a special promotional video on Monday morning.

The 2007 Formula 1 world champion, who returned to the sport at the beginning of this year after two seasons competing in the World Rally Championship, currently lies third in the 2012 drivers' standings.

The 33-year-old had long been expected to remain with Lotus for a second season. The team had an option for 2013 based upon certain performance criteria being met, which it has achieved comfortably.

Despite not winning a race on his return, Raikkonen has impressed with six podium finishes and has attained remarkable consistency, scoring points in every race except the Chinese Grand Prix and completing every racing lap in 2012 so far.

Sauber sign Hulkenberg for 2013

Nico Hulkenberg is to move from Force India to Sauber next season, the Swiss team confirmed on Wednesday. Sauber will announce their second 2013 driver at a later date, leaving Kamui Kobayashi’s F1 future uncertain.

Hulkenberg won the GP2 Series in 2009, made his Formula One debut with Williams in 2010 and took a pole position - in Brazil - in his maiden year. The 25-year-old German is currently 12th in the drivers’ championship, on 49 points after 17 of 20 races, with a best 2012 result of fourth place in Belgium.

“I’m really looking forward to working with the Sauber F1 Team,” said Hulkenberg, who served as a test driver with Force India in 2011 before returning to the grid this season. “It’s a well-placed team and very competitive. Plus it’s a team in which young drivers have repeatedly delivered exceptional performances. I would like to take up that baton.

F1 : Nurburgring officially confirms loss of Formula 1 race at historic German venue

Circuit says 'no more Formula 1' at the Nurburgring - The Nurburgring's chances of staging the German Formula One Grand Prix as scheduled next year have receded yet further.

Bernie Ecclestone was already in talks with Hockenheim about replacing the mid-July event next year, while the crisis struck Nurburgring is grappling with an insolvency process.

Still, there was a chance the Nurburging would pull through.

However, multiple German reports, including in the daily Rhein and Allgemeine newspapers, have now revealed that negotiations between the existing management and the managers of the insolvency have broken down.

A circuit spokesman confirmed to the DPA news agency that there will indeed be "no more Formula One" at the Nurburgring, as talks with Bernie Ecclestone had also ended.

But Pietro Nuvolini, the spokesman for the financial recovery experts in charge of the Nurburgring situation, insisted: "If the tenants want to return to the negotiating table, our door is not closed."

2014 season news

On track: Sochi F1 circuit to be completed in time

The construction of the Sochi Formula 1 track is developing according to plan and will be ready to host Russia’s maiden Grand Prix in 2014, says German architect, Hermann Tilke.

“We’re deeply involved in the construction of the circuit at the moment,” Tilke told DPA news agency. “I can say that everything is going according to schedule. Everything is fine. We’ll be able to build the track in time, which means by 2014.”

The racetrack will be situated not far from the Olympic Park, which will host most of the events of the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014. The first ever Russian Formula 1 Grand Prix is planned for July the same year.

Hermann Tilke is one of the leading F1 architects, with nine of his track designs present in the 2012 championship calendar.

The Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, which will see the sport making its long-awaited return to the US this weekend, is also the German’s creation.

How does one team having reliability issues ruin a season? This year has been fantastic, with more winners and more drivers on the podium than had been thought possible going into the season. This season has had more interesting and exciting races than the last few combined. But oh wait, its the British team, with the two over-hyped British drivers. My bad.

Sorry, that post has really annoyed me.

I take it you watch all sports purely objectively then Faster? Yes, I can just imagine you sitting in front of your TV contentedly saying to yourself "I don't care who wins here, it's sport that wins from this, and that's what matters"

Seriously, I'm more than aware of how good this season has been from a neutral's persepctive. But as a fan of Lewis Hamilton, it's been gaulling to see the McLaren team lose so many points for him through botched pit-stops and mechanical failures. These have ruined the season from my point of view because we should've seen a three way title battle, and the driver I support should've been in it (Button I'm less fussed about and the nationality of the team doesn't bother me either since most cars are built in Britain anyway. I'll still be a Hamilton fan when he's in a "German" car next year).

You can argue with Sir Frank Williams about how "overhyped" Hamilton is since he's said more than once that he's the driver he'd have in his team if he had free choice from the field. I respect his opinion a hell of a lot. Not that I'm getting into that debate with you now. Thing is Faster, you've been less than subtle about your aversion to British success in any sport during your time on these forums. That's fine, but if you're going to hold that point of view, don't pretend to be oooh-sooo-objective on such things at the same time, and don't be so snooty when people get a lttle bit emotional or show a bit of bias. This is sport, and you're just as biased as anyone else.

Its not about objectivity Rob, its about completely disqualifying something because your preferace does poorly. It is always nicer to have a horse in the race, but when your horse is doing poorly, it shouldn't take away from the overall quality of an event. With or without Hamilton this has been the most interesting Formula One season since 2008.

I know it sucks to support a driver with reliability problems (anyone driving McLaren circa 2005) but one aspect should not take away from an overall exceptional season.
