A Middle Eastern Olympics

Recommended Posts

Yeah, the middle east won't be hosting anytime soon. Istanbul won't host either. Dubai might in the future, not anytime soon though.

Too much political problems.

Nothing gets past you, does it.

I'm still waiting for your substantiated explanation why Dubai might one day host, but Doha is hopeless.

Well, I did say I can't see the middle east hosting anytime soon, but I think Dubai has more chance then Doha does, because of the issues with the Qatar 2022 Fifa World Cup hosting.

Only country which could host the Olympics in the middle east at this moment would be UAE, and even they also have their share of human rights issues (although much less compared to Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, and UAE is considered one of the most liberal of the area). Not mentioning the high temperatures during summer. It's not only a matter of politics, but also of climate/geology.

Qatar is too small and corrupt. UAE might be corrupt too but at least its more subtle and not obsessed with getting every event possible like Qatar does (they resigned from the race for the 2018 Asian Games, which in my opinion they could had won easily, specially considering the lackluster candidates it had)

The fact they obviously bought the 2022 WC and a lot of crap has happened inside FIFA on the last months due to it such as many sponsors and prominent members abandoning Blatter has already ruined their credibility a lot. Doha was one of the first cities to kick the bucket on the 2020 bid process.

Exactly. The United Arab Emirates doesn't bid for everything like Qatar does, the United Arab Emirates didn't buy the 2022 Fifa World Cup hosting rights like Qatar did. Of course, I did say that I can't see the middle east hosting anytime soon, but if they do, Dubai will stand a good chance of hosting a middle east Olympics.

UAE would be the only place in the ME that would stand a chance. Dubai is so artifical though. Vaguely remember it as a small seaside city when I was 10 way back in 1982. Unbelievable change. (Was a fishing and oil service centre.) Abu Dhabi was the premiere city back then...and still is more so now.

Call me old fashioned, but I still believe that a nation has to have won more than 1 medal in their history if they want to host.

I also think that they should support and enforce basic human rights so I guess we are not going to the Middle East until it liberalizes.

So I think Dubai has a nice shot at 2088 or maybe 2112.

You might think, that, but the IOC voters don't. See Beijing '08, Beijing '22.

Given that the options for 2022 at this point are have the Olympics in a country whose track record for human rights isn't the greatest or don't have the Olympics at all, pretty sure I know what the voters will choose. Beijing isn't a choice so much as a lack of option.

That aside, 1.3 billion people in China. So they can get away with certain things in an attempt to woo the IOC that smaller nations would not.

The Middle-East does not have the same sized market as China.

Exactly. I'm confident that if Stockholm, Oslo and Krakow had stayed in the bidding, Beijing would have stood no chance. Almaty stood no chance either way, not even against Beijing.

Hopefully, the 2024 bidding can fix the issues that Sochi 2014 caused.

You mean 2026 bidding. Whatever happens to the winter olympics rarely, if ever, affects the decision of potential future bidders for the summer olympics.

Well, the issues with Sochi 2014 has impacted both Olympic bidding's, because of Sochi 2014's expensive Olympics. If there are a decent amount of bidders for 2024, then that might help increase the amount of bidders for 2026.

I used to like the idea of Istanbul hosting the Olympics (They were my 2nd favorites to host the 2020 games just behind Japan). Now though, with all the stuff going on in Turkey right now, I'm not sure about an Instanbul Olympics...

I think Cairo or Casablance would be pretty cool since it wouldn't just be the first Olympic Games for the Arab World, but the first for Africa too

If we're going to have the first Arab/muslim nation host the Olympics, it would be better if it were one of those two, and also Istanbul if they ever get their s**t together.

After watching the first Saudi Arabian woman competing in athletics today, one thing crossed my mind seeing her run in that miserable outfit. If a city like Abu Dabi and Doha were to host, wouldn't all female athletesas well as tourists visiting the games be required to be covered up as well? For that reason alone they should never get the games.

First of all neither Dubai nor Abu Dhabi is going to be hosting an Olympics for the same reason Doha won't. The heat and the IOC is not going to go outside the SOG hosting window. I've lived and worked in Abu Dhabi for the last three years. Of the gulf countries, the UAE is the most liberal. There are no requirements for women to cover their heads or wear Muslim clothing. Alcohol is available (though it is expensive). It's actually quite westernized with American music and movies. It's not like Saudi Arabia. That all being said, a Dubai Olympics would probably be the most expensive in history and not just sporting venues either, their public transportation and road system are archaic.

Istanbul & Turkey still remains the best chance for the first Muslim Olympics, regardless of what happened there last month. If some are gonna still hold that against the Turks, then Cairo is definitely out since they have much more political instability than Turkey does. So the comparison seems bizarre & perplexing, to say the least. Have people already forgetten the massive protests that happened in Cairo over five years ago that ousted Mubarek. Not to mention the second coup that happened there three years ago, as well.

Plus, Cairo is very congested, very dilapidated, very corrupt & very polluted to even be considered seriously. Rio & Brazil is a walk in the park compared to the utter chaos that would surely be an Egyptian Olympics. Same with Casablanca & Morocco, but on a smaller scale, simply bcuz they're a much smaller nation. Therefore, it's far beyond either of their reaches anyway at this point in time. So it's Istanbul or bust for that part of the world as far as an Olympics is concerned.

No he doesn't have to do anything. What we need to do though is stop paying any attention to him. Looks like most people have already.

Unless Egypt ended to construct the new capital city (And still it's a big IF considering circunstances like political inestability and economic depressions), Cairo will be a disaster of a potential host, especially if the estimations of growning population in small territories are true.

I know the topic comes up from time to time about a SOGs in the Middle East. One of my students chose to do for her end of semester project a SOGs bid a UAE 2032 bid with Dubai and Abu Dhabi. She came up with a proposal including venue plans, infrastructure improvements, and a theme and logo. She had to present it before a panel who acted as IOC members. I've included the venue plan below. She proposed hosting the Olympics in October (always problematic) with largely existing and planned venues. The centerpiece of the bid was the proposed Dubai Olympic City which would be built near the site of the current Hamdan Sports Complex. This was also the site of the proposed Olympic Village while the MPC and IBC would be located at the Dubai 2020 Expo site. Other transportation improvements included two additional lines in the Dubai Metro, the often discussed and delayed Abu Dhabi Metro, and a bullet train connecting Dubai with Abu Dhabi. I've included the venue plan below. She borrowed heavily from the Los Angeles and Paris bid plans.
