@Faster does this damage a TO 2024 bid.

I don't think so:

1) CBC/Bell is not directly affiliated with the Canadian Olympic Committee, so the bid wouldn't be penalized

2) CBC/Bell will be all over a Canadian bid, so what they're fighting over right now (rights to Sochi, Rio) wouldn't be an issue

3) Canada as a country is probably a tad inconsequential in the grand scheme of things

NHL players expected for Olympics

TOKYO -- The International Ice Hockey Federation is operating on the assumption that NHL players will take part in the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

"We've prepared everything with the idea that NHL players will be there," IIHF president Rene Fasel said Friday. "We've decided about the format and expect them to be there."

Fasel was re-elected to another four-year term as president at the IIHF's general congress in Tokyo.

Just 16 months before the 2014 Sochi Games, NHL players are not certain to compete in the two-week tournament in Russia run by the IIHF. Fasel said the tournament will start a day later than the 2010 games in Vancouver.

"We decided to start on Wednesday instead of Tuesday," Fasel said. "In Vancouver, we started on Tuesday but the players will need more time to travel to Russia. It will mean less rest between games but we have to start on Wednesday."

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman has said no decision is imminent about possibly shutting down for two weeks to accommodate an Olympics in which some games would be played in the middle of the night in North America, thus affecting TV viewership and interest.

Before the NHL makes up its mind, a collective bargaining agreement between owners and players must be negotiated. The NHL locked out its players on Sept. 16 when talks broke down. The two sides plan to meet again Friday.

Russian player Alex Ovechkin, one of the NHL's signature stars, is threatening to play in Sochi no matter what the NHL does.

Fasel said the NHL could decide as late as January not to come but the tournament will go ahead.

"We'll play the tournament anyway," Fasel said. "There are not only 750 NHL players playing hockey in the world."

The NHL will be there. And props to Fasel, he's been extremely accomodating to the moronic NHL comissioner and has given him all the time in the world to make a decision, and still hasn't. If the NHL had any respect for the Olympics, they would've come to a decision a year ago when there was still time to decide the qualification and tournament format. The NHL doesn't need a CBA to make a decision on the Olympics. There was nothing about Christmas 2014 in the last CBA either, but it's implied that there would be no games on Christmas 2014. Similar with the Olympics, there could be an implied expectation that NHLers be free to enter the Olympics unless stated otherwise.

The NHL will be there in 2014, and beyond.

I hope they will let players to play OG tournament. Kopitar is the crucial player of Slovenian team, he needs to play

Slovenia won't win a game if they have Kopitar or not. He won't make a difference. NHL participation affects the other countries not Slovenia.

It does affect Slovenia. He is their only NHL player of a playing base of less then 1000. Its huge if he doesn't play for Slovenia.

He won't make a difference. It's not as if Slovenia will beat Russia and the US with Kopitar.

Something else I noticed. Apparently the team sizes will go up from 23 (20 skaters + 3 goaltenders) to 25 (22 skaters + 3 goaltenders). That means that the players that used to be alternates will actually be on the team (and eligible for medals). Definitively a good change for the bigger hockey nations - especially Canada :P

There was just a big discussion about NHL participation on Hockey Night in Canada. Looks as though there is a bit of a stand off going on between the IOC and IIHF and the NHL. However, things still look optimistic, and the IIHF Commision is meeting this week. Also, it looks as though we'll see the return of the World Cup in 2015 or 2016.

I don't doubt for one minute that the NHl players will be at the games now as for the World Cup what i would like to see is one year have the World Championsship then the next year hold the World Cup don't do them both in the same year.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said this week he hopes to conclude the process with the International Ice Hockey Federation. (Nam Y. Huh/Associated Press)

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman will try to wrap up a deal Monday allowing NHL players to compete in the Sochi Olympics.
He says the league will meet in New York with the players' association, the International Olympic Committee and International Ice Hockey Federation.
Bettman spoke Thursday after a session with the Board of Governors. He says the board has given him the authority to finish the deal. Bettman said "that's something we will try and conclude an agreement with."
Having the NHL players compete in the games would mean a break in next year's NHL regular season of about two weeks in February.

I'm very confident we'll get NHL players in Sochi. All we need is the ink on the paper and signatures.

Looking forward to seeing the potential return of the World Cup of Hockey. Hopefully we should see a qualification round this time for many nations in order to expose the sport further to many.
