In Buenos Aires you can see in a very clear day the other margin of Plate River, 42 Km away, but in Montevideo, actually, it's already open sea, despite some tour guides talking about the widest river in the world there... Anyway, the other "margin" is 270 Km away from Montevideo. yeap.... i have a friend from Uriguay and her father has a ferry service between Montevideo and Buenos Aires and she told me its like 2:30 hours...

I wouldn't have believed that you find it out that quickly, because Gütersloh doesn't have a very distinguishable, "original" look actually (besides maybe the particularly ugly town hall ). But yeah, it's Gütersloh. Gütersloh is located in Westphalia, though, Scotguy - not in the Rhineland. And it has a large British Army base (until the British troops will be pulled out in 2016). Was that where you recognised the city from?

Yes, but how do you find a picture with Google photo search if you don't know the name of the city shown on it yet - and if you only have the photo itself? I'm confused.

I couldn't even answer CAF's question in time because you guy(s) blared the solution out only a few minutes after he asked it (and before I was able to see his question). I know that the internet makes everything possible these days - but nevertheless, please keep at least some "mysteries" and save the fun for others. Thank you.

krow Posted April 27, 2013 Report Posted April 27, 2013 i think when you click on the images tab in google, there's a camera button in the search bar and you can use that to either upload a pic from your hard drive or enter a url from the web and then google somehow, amazingly, crawls the web and finds every web page that features that photo. so in this case it might have shown the wikipedia page with the city's name. are you the german journalist? i use it for work all the time to find the provenance of a photo or to find a larger size to put on the website.

But you can't use images you find in Google deliberately (i.e., without checking whether it's in the public domain or without getting the approval of the copyrights' owner) for any publications. I would have gotten serious trouble at work if I had used a picture illegally for our website or our newspaper. That's why we always used photos of our own photographers and archive, of the news agency to which contents we had a subscription or (if we couldn't find any suitable pictures in the news agency's stock or our own archive) public domain pictures from Wikimedia Commons or other sources. I hope you do those checks as well in your work before you use pictures you found by googling. Do you work as a journalist?

Do you work as a journalist? yes i do, i'm a magazine editor. google has a great way to filter only those images that have creative commons licenses. also, pr agencies, sources, and companies often have or send photos for editorial use that are too small to use, but you can use reverse image search to find the larger versions. in those cases, consent to publish is implied.
